this seems to be a depressingly common occurance with us zed owners at the mo but...i had a crash on sunday. went on a grass verge smashed two concrete posts in half and demolised a road sign all with the drivers door. i ended up in a ditch on the other side of the road.

was bloody lucky really as on my way into the ditch i went between 2 trees that were closer together then the car is long...so went through at exactly the right angle to miss them. also missed a second road sign by a few inches too.

its amazing how un-touched most of the car is...but my door took all the impact of the posts and sign so is completely smashed. its moved in so far it kinda looks like ive got a wide arse kit on that side! :D does anyone know of someone in the nottingham area that could look to see if there is any chassis damage?

also when i rang the RAC i told them i was in a ditch and they said it would be ok to recover my car, but in the end i wound up paying for it...they would only pay for the tow back as it was off the road. trouble is i was offered a tow out of the ditch by someone with a four by four which i turned down as the RAC said they would do it. anything similar happened to anyone else?

any advice greatfully recieved!

must be the sill aswell as i cant even open the door and the hole thing is completely bent in. does the sill count as part of the structural strength of the car? if so im guessing its kinda a write off:(

Sorry to hear of your situation mate. :(

You say the sill is dented. The chassis is about 4-5 inches back from the outer sill, so unless it has bent all the way back there you could still be OK.

I hope everything goes OK for you.

Stuart

thanks for your replys lads! much appreciated

im not sure exactly stu, is the sill just basically the bit you cant see when you shut the door...the bottom part of the door frame for want of a better description. if so it may be ok, but the door really is pretty smashed in so i'll have to see. i haven't been on the site as much as i'd have liked lately so i dont know how far you've got with your car now but good luck with everything! hope she comes out a beast mate! what actually went wrong in the end?

think i now know why the back end went out so bad now. my steering wheel was at about a third of a turn when the wheels were actually strait so when i went above the speed at which the HICAS comes into affect the car thought i was turning a lot more then i actually was...so when i took the turn and the back end stepped out a little the HICAS probably accentuated it more. i could be wrong but i cant explain why the back end went out so unpredicatbly..it wasn't that icey.

Funny you should mention recovery costs...

Last week on my accident I had the fortunate luck that a recovery truck stopped to help me out.

When talking to him, while waiting for the farmer to come with a chainsaw to chop 4 foot of tree off the side of my Zed, we discussed recovery.

He said if I had the vehicle recovered by him to my house, I would be charged for it.

If I called the AA out (I am a member with roadside and relay cover) he said they would also charge me as it was a Road Traffic Accident (RTA) not a breakdown.

The ONLY way around this was to either ---

a) Have AA insurance and breakdown cover.

b) Know a mate with a recovery truck.

Just thought I'd pass on this info, if it's any use to you.

Cheers

Ben

lol, literally just wished you luck with your car too mate...i'll say again, hope it all turns out well! :)

thanks, that may come in usefull! and whats the farmer worried about his bush for, he oviousley got it all back with his chaninsaw! b*****d! :D

keep us posted with the outcome mate

Sorry to hear it mate.

If you're in Nottingham, the obvious one is FG Accident Repair (used by Luke ZCentre) 0115 986 0690.

The one the jigged my Z (laser jig jobbie) is AW Accident Repair http://www.awrepairgroup.co.uk/index2.htm 0870 460 5787

Good luck - glad you're OK - Gio

thanks gio! :)

sorry but how do you mean used by luke? i thought he did body work himself? and is in nottingham too. i've been very lucky and should be able to get all the panels from jeff at zedworld already in the right colour.:D

The AA will recover an accident if the vehicle is undriveable. I've been around when a few cars have been pulled out of ditches (never mine though ;)) *touch wood*

Sorry to hear mate.

We all seem to need even greater care in this foul weather.

Geoff.

you just got it sorted didnt ya.blimey ..im glad ya ok tho mate.

the back end on zeds do love going a spinning 360's.you didnt have cheap tyres did ya???

i learnt that lesson a couple of years ago.doin a 540 after a roundabout

anyway glad ya ok.im sure you will be back goin faster..

jason

cheers jay, yeah im fine. a 540...that must have been entertaining! only managed about 90 to both sides i think

yeah only had it back a month. that now makes it a grand 5 weeks of driving out of 7 months of ownership. lol.

oh well, im sure she'll be back soon. and your right...faster, but safer! lol. cheap tyres will be off and traction control and suspension have moved up my list of mods!

Sorry to hear about your car, I couldnt bear to look at my zed if I poo-ranged it!!!!

Best of luck with getting back on the road......and to a speedy recovery for your zed....

Hi Edd,

5 weeks driving out of 7 months, shit! can only get betta mate!

Can i ask what make of tyres you had on ,

maybe others with the same make might get 'em changed.

cheers

yeah hopefully...unless the chassis's bent, i dunno how fixable that would be.

on the front ive got bridgestones which seem really good. on the back its uni-royal. they were new on the car when i got it and considering the short period ive been driving it for i havent bothered to change them...bad decision! they'd prob be ok for normal cars but no good for 300 brake car in winter i have to say!

hey bud, after our last dealings ,if ya need anything give me a shout,i will get ya what ya need for "cost price" for any repairs .i like to look after my friends m8.jay

cheers jay! :)

very much appreciated mate! i'll be in touch

:( Jeepers, another one. :( Hope it's not too badly damaged. Glad you're ok.

  • 1 month later...

well i've had two quotes of around 2k to fix it.

that means i basically cant afford to do it. the question is what is the best thing to do with it?

i'd appreciate some ideas of its value please boys and girls...

black

manual TT

import

38k miles

500 miles ago had -

60k courtesy service done (all belts, water pump etc) plus the timing belt tensioner and idler pullies

PCV valves

hybrid turbos (from smithy) plus all water and oil feed lines

also has a K & N induction kit

and some sort of chip...dont know the company

recaro seats

FET turbo timer

new clutch - when the turbos were done my mechanic said the clutch had been recently changed and had no wear on it

aftermarket wheels...nothing amazing, but the tyres are new

all work is under warrenty, and the car had a warrenty wise warrenty anyway with about 4 months left to run

im tempted to keep the engine (as it runs perfectly and is ready for some good modding) and in the future put it in another zed, maybe get one cheap with a blown engine and swap...thing is what would happen to the engine if i left it in a garage for a year or two???

does anyone know how much id get for just the body? ive been told about a grand.

thanks for any help you can offer!

Ed

I'm not expert on engines Ed but I woud say that the same rules apply as with servicing whether the engine be in the car or not. You would just have to change fluids and belts at the given time as opose to mileage.

...would i be expecting too much to get a grand for the engine?

Sorrry to hear this eddy, blody el mate you are a cornerstone of the forum!

I think you need to talk to peter at PPS!

i shouldn't think so but how much would you be looking to move the whole car for?
