I have a bonnet vent which when it rains it drips water on the temp sensor area.

After the recent rain my car have started running a little lumpy at idle.

Also when I first start it from cold it idles at 1,5krpm which is normal but the fan comes on, then when I rev it a little i.e. up to 1,750rpm and the acceleration drops the fan goes off.

I have check ECU codes and I got the all clear.

ConZult shows a slightly lazy O2 sensor but everything else looks fine.

Apart from the obvious i.e. clean/check all connectors, change O2 sensors.

Does this diagnosis ring any bells ?

Changed both O2 sensors this afternoon which I did in a record breaking time of 37 minutes

Check with a conZult and they are both lively little buggers now.

Cleaned connection to TPS, Temp Sensor and PTU.

Still got a slight lumpyness to it :(.

Do you think it would help it I poured 2 liters of water into each cylinder and tried again ;)

Yoyu takeing teh P**s m8? you know i was not best pleased when i got all that water in my cilinders! :D :D :D :D

If the fan comes on for no particular reason, it usually means there's something wrong with the connector of the temp. sensor.

perhaps the temp sensor has been blinded by all the shiney silver in there, give everything a good thick coat of halfords matt black and see if that cures the problem!!!:D ;)

What is the condition of your coil packs Stu?

Being as you have a great big wapping hole in your bonnet, stuff under there might be getting damper than normal. Might be worth spraying a mist of WD40 just incase it is due to the damp.

Just a though.

Sorry, you can't do that, there is simply not enough room to pour 2 litres of water in each cylinder - you only have 3 litre engine ! :D

Thanks Eric,

I've had a new harness and temp sensor about 6 months ago.

Is there any way of checking it via the conZult ? as the ECU error codes don't tell me there are any problems .

Everyone else,

Thanks for the humour :D

The service manual has spec's for the resistance of the temp sensor at cold and warm.

Check this with a multimeter at the ECU plug and then you'll kno w that the sensor and the wiring are fine if it's OK. If it's bad then check the resistance at the sensor its self, if it dosen't match up then the wiring is bad.

Probably best to disconnect the plug from the ECU before you do it.

If there is a problem with the temp sensor (ie: bad connection, sensor fault etc..) the Conzult should show up a code 13...

That's what I would have expected mate, but I don't get anything.

I'll try John's suggestion and check the sensor and the wiring.

Code 13 only comes up when the sensor totally fails (shorted or 0 ohm resistance)

In your case it probably gives faulty readings, which should be visible in one of the monitor screens of the conzult.

Eg: it shows that the temp is high while the engine is still cold (or vice versa)

Right then,

When I get home tonight I'll plug the conZult in and then Start her up from cold to see what water temp I get.

I'll be back ;)

Ok just got in so I plugged the conZult in and started her up.

Temp Sensor read 14C and started to rise after about a minute it was up to 23C so it doesn't look like it's the temp sensor that's causing the lumpyness.

What's next ? :(

I've had new plugs, new coil pack connectors and new injector connectors.

Should the injector pulses be the same on both sides (i.e. L & R) or do they vary ?
