OK, here's a question that just occurred to me...

Lots of us have spent 5k on a car and then spent another 5k-15k looking after the bloody thing.

So if you were to go out and buy a car currently in manufacturing, for that same 20 grand - what would you buy that even comes CLOSE to a sleek and sexy RWD 300bhp GT like wot we've got?

A TT? Na.

A M5? An AMG Merc? Na.

Trevors cost twice that and are even less reliable.

I'm on the verge of suggesting an MR2... help!

Any other ideas? Maybe a Saab? ("Helping" a mate test drive a 9-3 Vector on Friday.)

350Z is not an acceptable answer. :D

For £20K......??

I'd probably look for an XK8, although it's slower than the Zed so if the XKR can be bought for £20K.......

I couldn't drive an M3 - we all know what BMW drivers are:D

A TVR? then again they are not particularly reliable, so my mechanic reckons....

I suppose I could always get a late model Supra TT:p

Heh Heh, I'll keep the Zed for now thanks !!!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Now I might be a tad bias but...

TVR500.jpg

Under £20K, with specs that would scare all but a very well tuned Zed!

5000cc, V8, 307bhp/tonne, 0-60 = 4.5, 0-100 = 10.5, top speed = 167mph

The torque of the Rover/Buick V8 in this guise is unbelievable, it will pull from 1500rpm smootly to the 6K redline. On the motorway it is a joy, nail it in 5th and the waves of torque will have you upto 130 before you know it, and the noise... WOW!!!

But it is NOT a Zed alternative, it is very much a British sports car rather than a GT. I bought mine with No toys at all, so no ABS, No PAS, No A/C, you have to drive it and there is no doubt sometimes it is hard work, but BIG fun!

Gets my vote.

Aye exactly. I said:

Evos are lumpy, ugly, AWD, and certainly not a GT! (I still want one though. :D )

TVR500... agree, hadn't thought of that one. I had a really good nosey around one in Southwaite the other day - didn't realise they had such good interiors...

Yep, the interiors are lovely, this is mine :D:

But... A fire in a TVR can end up like this...

Apparently this was a Griffith!! :(

Honda S2000, like this one recently at the Ollerton show !

Trying to talk the missus into getting one ;)

Tim, what does the aluminium tap in the middle control? it looks like it could be "cold" or "hot"?? :D;)

Seriously though - lovely looking motor - gonna bring it to the next local meet? Particularly like the first piccie. :)

Hehehehe.

That's how you open the doors! button on the top locks the doors from inside and illuminates to let you know you're locked in. Another TVR quirk!

Tim

Tim, you're making me jealous - stop it !

Glad to hear you took the plunge - don't let the VISA bills get you down.

Honda S2000 (although a roadster not a GT) or more sensibly a Prelude ;)

Have you actually seen one of these? I followed one out of Ashford and onto the M20 the other week. I can report that it is hideous! Buy the Merc it's better looking!

Tim

A new Hyundai coupe V6......and keep the change:D :D

Lucky sod - getting to drive a Z AND an S2000 :slap: :)

Id get the AMG but not the standard 1 id try and pick up a Brabus version as i think theyre in a league of their own.

Theyre styling is just class and feels well original on the car.

Hurray 4 Brabus (love thy BRABUS)

I spent nearly £24k buying my Zed (a few years ago mind!). Still love it though.... :D :D :D

OK how come there are almost no 2+2s in the suggestions? (Only one I can spot is the Hyundai v6, I think?)

I've had mine for over 4 years and to think of a replacement is well difficult. It needs 280ps, rwd, 4 seats (even tho 2 are short term as far as the occupants say :D ), 2 doors, big boot (comparatively).

There are a few which fit but cost £s - DB7, Maserati.

What else?

Probe? don't be a Cartman.

TVR? not 2+2

S2000? not 2+2

GT40 replica? not 2+2 and Ay Caramba!

Corvette? see you round the twisties...

Brabus? Don't know anyone rich enough to kidnap.

350Z? not 2+2

See why the 2+2 Z is such an unbeatable deal? As the thread started, what's the closest modern equivalent?

Cheers - Gio

The best Lotus Espirit - maybe 0r Honda NSX

Geoff.

What about Skyline!!

GTR33 V-spec is similar performance, bit more room in the back and can be had from 15k

Please agree with me, just got one and feeling lonely:cry:

You would probably get the Lotus Esprit SE which isnt faster than the Z. They only really became faster around the N reg when it became the S4 I think it was called. Then the GT series and then finally the V8, all of which are over £20,000 still.
