Could be a bad battery, but I have seen a few Zs with mad start motors

Does it sound like the starter motor noise from any other car; sorta like a grinding noise, or does it sound like some strange manic woodpecker ?

Just asking 'cause mine went woodpecker   yesterday when I went to take it out of the garage; having not been moved in a month or so. Didn't have time to investigate so I left it there and took the runner out.

mine makes like a grinding noise then stops till you start it again had some work done on engine maybe he didnt tighten it up good .

ok - cheers mate !

Just done a search and it looks like my noise could be the solenoid on the starter. Apparently it makes just the same electrical clicking when there's not enough power from the battery to turn it over; it had been sat in the garage for about a month after all

Konrad regars yours would also be worth checking all your earths i had exactly that on my lotus if you can get the starter moter off and take it to a lucas shop then they will test it for you did with the lotus but that was Lucas starter motor as i thought the solenoid had gone also was fine....is the zed lucas dont know i doubt it but def worth a look at the earths to the engine!!!

Cheers for that Splashout !

I left the battery on charge overnight though and sure enough the problem's cured, as Vijay suggested in an old mail. Seems the solenoid needs the battery on full charge to run. My fault for not using the car for a month and not keeping it topped up :o

If it happens again with a charged battery though I'll try Lucas.

Cheers mate !

FYI I had starter problems which turned out to be loose earth to solenoid. It would start fine with a jump start, and battery was good. Turns out the solenoid needs as much volts as possible, and the loose earth took the voltage below the threshold. Hence jump start was fine (since you get about 13-14 volts). This also caused my alarm to go off spuriously!

Just a quick tighten with a spanner (battery disconnected of course) and no problem since.

The nut wasn't actually that loose - could be your problem is as simple as this!:)

Worth a try - specially if it prevents that noise ever happening in public :)
