A question from one of the MR2 mob was recently sent to the UK MOT Centre staff :-

 

Q: I own a November 1994 MR2 Turbo which is of course a Japanese Imported vehicle. Is it a legal requirement for my car to have a Catalytic convertor on in order for it to pass its MOT, or can I remove the CAT with a cat replacement pipe and it will still be legal for the MOT?

 

And the answer :-

 

A: Basically if your vehicle is not listed in the latest emissions book (it won't be because it's an import) you can replace the cat. The vehicle should be tested to the limits as listed. CO

So I assume that as long as you point out that the car is a Jap Import then you can get away without a Cat ! Unless, they argue that it is the same model as the UK spec (the insurance companies would disagree) in which case you do need one if the car was originally fitted with one by the factory.

 

Hurrah for imports !

Well considering how often they(Quentin, DTI etc.) keep stressing how much imports differ from UK spec. cars, I don't see how they could possibly use that old line!

My car just MOT'd with 0.46% co and thats with JWT chip,K&N intake and the cats are where they belong(in the bin). So it still passes by miles.

Last time mine was MOT'd (It has no cats) we had to rev the sodding thing to about 2000 rpm before the emmissions machine would actually read anything.
