I got the gearbox out and all the pipes and electrics are disconnected so almost ready to lift the big lump of junk out ;)

I read in the engine removal tech article on twinturbo.net that you have to disconnect the steering universal joints as part of the process.

Is this right as the steering rack seems to be under the engine on the subframe?

or is it bolted to the block?

If so, how do they come apart?

Leave the steering joints, it's not really necessary to disconnect them.

Only things that really need to be disconnected (from the engine) are:

-battery :)

-about everything on top of the plenum

-aircon and steering pump.

-wiring and all small air hoses running to the engine.

-intercooler/intake pipes

-fan + fanclutch

-fuel hoses

-alternator (it's easier to remove the complete alternator then to disconnect just the connectors.)

-2 hoses running to the oilcooler

-2 small hoses running to the heater

..and remove the O/S exhaust downpipe - that's the only part which'll get caught behind the steering UJ's otherwise. You might require lots of 'PlusGas' to loosen the nuts n bolts though.

And a question for the masses here: why are the turbo bolts etc all 1/2" and not a metric size like _everything_ else on the car??

Si.
