Have been having friendly banter with guy at work about his tvr and my datsun as he calls it, he has a 95 n reg griffith 500 5ltr 68 k full tvr history, and yes you guessed it tonight it finally happened, we left work at same time, and the inevitable happened.

Ive driven his a few times b4 i got my tt, and to be honest i thought nothing could be quicker, its sound and feel are awesome.

We went from 40, then almost a stand still then from 100, so a good measure. result; from 40 to 80 = same, standstill to 150 = same ish to 80 after 80 i was off, i gained about six car lengths ahead, couldnt believe it im still in awe, then again from 100 i was off again, up to 140 this time, same sort of gap

When we stopped at rbout he shouted i think you got me, to which i couldnt resist shouting"yeah not bad for a datsun"

I couldnt give a monkeys, but if he insulted my car i would make sure of it even if i drove an allegro

If I've got this right you think someone calling your car a Datsun is an insult. Why!. Without going into the Datsun/Nissan history, the 240Z is the finest production sports car ever built, and the Datsun marque almost single handedly brought afforable, economical, high spec cars to the UK. One person I spoke to, knowlegble about these things, said that many of the dealerships that took on the Datsun/Nissan dealerships are now made for life.

  • Author

Point taken but there aint many datsuns about now as they all rusted away, however its the manner in which he said datsun, it wasnt meant as a compliment

  • Author

Oh and before anyone starts shouting bout allegros, i think theyre wonderfull too, especially the square steering wheel one

When I went into the pub to ask if its OK to do the North West meeting there, he asked what cars and I said "Nissan 300ZX" and he said "Ahhh the Datsun one"

Sounds strange but Dastun is now famed for making the Z series and other sports cars. Nissan isnt. Being called a Datsun is probably more of a compliment than being called a Nissan.

Did you know that Nissan was actually a UK company upto the 80's, and a majority of the 240Z styling where done by UK designers.

Stuart

Yeah, It's a pity that most of them are rusted away, bit of of underestimate by the Japanese re our weather conditions and road salting. Also the the rusting problem got emphasised by the reliability of the cars, while UK cars were dying through shite engines ,gearboxes ,build quality, bad engineering the only thing that killed the imports was the rust. If the UK cars hadn't demised prematurely to the problems mentioned before they would have had the same corrosion problems.

Good effort my son! ;)

Like on an episode of Shit'th Gear I watched on Sky a while back where this guy with a modded Pulsar whooped Vicky "I'm a pre-op tranny" Munterson in a Viper! Class! :D

She deserved it! :D

Re the 240z, I'll think youll find many people/nations claiming the credit, UK,US,Germany, but when you get to the nitty gritty it's Japanese designed, Japanese built end of story. I'm old enough to remember 'Jap crap', presume this isn't said too much anymore.

An anecodote that proves nothing, my mate showed me his new XR2 1987ish, it was OK,took him to look at my 82 280ZX he thought he was in a 'spaceship'. Memories, like the corne....

I had a race against a Cerbera and got completely wasted after a ton.....just disappeared - quite impressive - but mine is stock.

I know had the experience of smoking my dads Chimera the other day upto a ton going away all the time then slowed down for turn off when we got in he said you had me to 100 then you must of hit 5th gear and i started catching you was a picture to see his face drop when i said no id stopped by then he just responded i wouldnt of caught you then.....Quality!!

As for some of the cebras and tuscans they actually have detuned f1 engines so damn impressive we can stay with them atall considering how much more we probably weigh than then too!!!!

well done gavo

i cant wait to have a race with my old Zed soon:D

you can't beat turbo-power

All I can say is I'm amazed. The Griff has a 0-60 of about 4.2 secs (I think), is more powerful, and has considerably less mass (Nelson!) than a Z. I've been in a Griff when driven 'enthusastically' and they are swift !

They also sound awesome !

True Andy but how often is a race on the roads from a standing start and the zed can hold its own with most from 40+ IMHO but as for TVR sound oh my god nothing beats it!!

If the Griff had of been a pre-cat model, I think it might have been a different outcome.

A detuned f1 engine? Are you sure?

Its the SPEED12 that has the detuned F1 engine. It has proved to be so quick that Trevor (TreVoR) won't put it on the road. 800 to 1200BHP I think (?)

LOl since when were TVR making f1 engines?

TVR are renowned for being so optomistic on there figures.

Remember HAIRYS TVR? went in that it felt very fast, i believe him and Craig were dead even when they raced.

Trax 2001 they had a 4.5 litre cebra doing the 0-60 and in three runs it never went faster than 5.1 no matter what he tried.

I think TVR have a hit and miss ratio lol, some are **** fast some are donkeys, but none of them have detuned f1 engines lol.

Ad speed 12? never went into production no? Plus they break down far more than the zed wbhahaha.

Actually the speed twelve did go into production in 2000 but obviously was only built in very small numbers to order the road version had a 800bhp 90 degree v12 which in the words of the dealer was actually a detuned f1 engine now he may of been spouting crap to try and sell a tuscan which i personaly think look like crap oh and you cant even lift the bonet you have to take the whole damn thing off whats up with that?????

but hey id rather have the zed anyday

:D :D

As Warren says, my 4 litre TVR was a dead match for Craig's Z. And that was based on multiple goes and with each of us driving both cars. A 5 litre Griff should have been quicker (although dependent on the tuning of your Z).

Having said that, as Warren says, TVRs vary enormously on quality. They need a lot of money and TLC spent on them to keep them nice. And that's a lot when compared to a Z. I know - I've done both and couldn't afford to keep the TVR.

No TVR has an F1 engine. But they still sound nicer than anything else on the planet.

I miss my TVR and Z equally. The Z is a much better value car but the TVR, on the right day, is by far the better driving experience.

F! engines are 3L or 3.5L?

Speed12 7.8L aren't they?

http://www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~anchsa/speed12new.htm

So 100bhp per litre is pretty damn crap really.

But admittedly 800bhp in a 950kg car must be awesome
