Hi everyone. ?️

I thought I'd introduce myself as a new member. I'm currently on the lookout for a 300Z TT manual. I've been trying to decide what to buy next. I will be buying in May/June next year.

I currently own a mk1 Eunos and I've had a mk2 RS Roadster, an NA Supra manual and a TT manual Supra, so I thought of something completely different. I've always had my eye on 300Z's, and they look like great cars!

I would love to go test drive one right now, but there's no a whole lot of point until I'm ready to get one haha. What are 300Z's like to drive?

If I can't find one in the UK, then I will have to import but I'd rather not do this. ?

Any Zed is worth getting a full inspection on these days as owners may genuinely be unaware of what problems lurk and equally long lists of faults on MOT sheets can be common with the age it’s just about getting right into the detail and pricing accordingly.

Hi. Thank you...that's great advice. I've read up on these cars with potential issues, rust etc. There are some really cheap ones out there at the moment!

I would love to go and view one, but I'd feel guilty to the seller as I would have no intention of purchasing, so it would be wasting their time. ?

I've noticed that lots of Auto's are currently for sale. Most are NA's, some are TT's. What's the Auto box like on the Zed? ?

I used to daily a twin turbo auto and I quite liked it. Compared to modern auto boxes it’s woeful but it was still nice to drive. The problem with the autoboxes these days is that they’re starting to become troublesome and unreliable if they’ve not been serviced properly. You can’t beat the fun factor of a manual box!

Thanks for your comment. That's a shame that some of the Auto boxes will be knackered. You can't beat a manual! They're a rare unicorn to find!!

I'd rather not import from Japan as I'm looking at near on £10k for one, but I'm starting to think that I may have to unless I'm in the right place at the right time!

What do you think your budget will be when the time comes to buy one? Also note that the prices will hike in May/June time as people are looking for fun summer cars!

My budget will be around £6k - £7.5k for May. That should be manual TT territory, right?

Yeah I know prices will go up when Summer is on the horizon ?

It’s hard to tell at the moment as the market is very fluid. Your problem might not be how much they’re available for but more ‘if’ they’re available! At which point you’re either forced to pay what the seller is asking or waiting for something that might not appear!

Many of these fresh import cars are high quality and in great condition, which is generally why they cost a few quid more. I would suggest that a SWB TT manual that doesn’t need some work doing to it will likely be for sale for a similar price as a fresh import car. I know you say the rust and mechanical engine issues are your priorities, quite rightly so, but if you end up with a tatty car that needs a repaint, costs will start to escalate quickly!

Also, the family estate wagons really aren’t that bad and still great fun to drive. Some would argue more so!

Your Zed is lovely. Wow. ? Is it a 2+2?

Yeah you're exactly right. I think I may have to import. I've been quoted £8k - £10k which will likely rise again next year by another £1.5k.

There are a few TT Auto's for sale right now, but I'm not sure that I want an Auto to he honest. I'm predominantly after a SWB TT manual, but I could live with a LWB, it's not the end of the world! ?

Yeah rust and the engine is my first priority. I would be willing to pay less for a TT manual if say it needs paint. I was quoted £2.5k for a re-start from a guy who knows his stuff. As long as the engine and gearbox is immaculate and rust the rust is either none or very minimal, then I'd be happy!

If I can criticize Joel at all then it's the lack of pictures or opportunities we get to see his Z, he does get told to share more, you are lucky indeed for one to be uploaded here.

You'd of thought with such a nice example he'd take every chance possible to post a picture ?.

I second this. ? More pics please Joel ?

IMO the Auto box is not terrible. My car was an auto before it was converted by PowerZed. It put a big smile on my face when the 'POWER' light came on. ?

Thanks very much for your comment. I think I'll try both and see what I like best, although a manual is always preferable to me (personally).

I would quite like the "POWER" light coming on though haha. ? ?

I couldn’t live with a LWB [emoji23]

I like the rarity of having a manual SWB TT

They are coming up now and then birdie to the rarity it will be maybe more of a case of grab the best one going and work on it not to say that it will need a lot of work people tend to hold onto them more in comparison with the LWB although the numbers available is a big difference.

I know it’s been argued before in terms of cost and I would still say that like for like a SWB should command a higher value but again this is down to the rarity and my bias of course.

My preference is for manual, too. That said, because of a dodgy knee and London traffic I had 2 NA autos (Zeds) for many years until reverting to a manual this year (no more London hooray). They were very nice autos to drive. Being JDM, had the Power & Hold switch as well so could select Power any time ? . Even took the blue one round Thruxton. You can pootle like a granny or, as they used to say at Heston, "make good progress". A real driver's autobox. Apparently, they're quite clever, learn your style, can tell when you're driving in, er, a "spirited" fashion and adjust shift points as they go. I drove a TT auto for a few days and that was almost as mental as the TT manual. There was a sort of hyperdrive effect if you booted it, it gathered its skirts and whoosh. Great fun. So as a manual driver, I thoroughly recommend the auto.

Thank you very much for your comment. This makes me feel better about buying an Auto TT. I would need one that has been looked after of course, but there are quite a few for sale at the moment. Not many manual TT's in sight...and I'd rather not import one.

I suppose what I could do is eventually convert my TT Auto to a TT manual. Can't be that hard of a job?? The Supra community do this all the time. I want an SWB one though.

I just want to get a Zed now! Haha.

I agree. I don't want a LWB Zed! I'm after a SWB one. If I can't find a manual TT in the time frame I'm looking for, then I'm going to have to buy an Auto TT, and eventually convert it to a manual. The Supra community do it all the time...I imagine its straight forward job?

If I can find a SWB TT Manual, then great. If not, then I'll have to settle for a Auto version (for the meantime).

Sure go for a SWB auto TT over any LWB. Going rate for a manual conversion at the moment is probably around £800 then just a case of fitting it. Worth doing a few upgrades though before it gets fitted and equally a few jobs done while the box is off and accessible to other parts like EGR delete etc.

That isn't a bad price at all for a manual conversion. Apart from the EGR delete, what changes do you recommend to be made? Now I know these cars need someone who knows what they're doing, so who do you use for work and maintenance?

I've been to-ing and fro-ing whether to buy a Zed or another Supra in all honesty but I think I'm going to get a TT Auto Zed. Prices are lower and it's something far different from what I've had before. I can pick up a decent TT Auto SWB for £5k right now. Unfortunately, I can't buy until May 2020 at the earliest.

As for somebody to do the work there are only a couple of people in the country whose names come up. I won’t get into them in open forum as it’s a volatile topic and others personal views will come out happy to talk in private on the subject. I’m lucky that I’ve been a engineer for 2 decades and do 99% of my Zed work myself which negates issues arising from relying on someone else [emoji1]

Thank you for that link. It made for an interesting read!

I'm also happy to chat in private if you wish. Trusting people with your pride and joy is one of the stressful as you're literally relying on that person or workshop to do the job and not wreck your car and leave scratches and mark's etc.

Someone has already kerbed my once immaculate wheels on my mk1 Eunos...but I can't prove it. In future, I will be taking pics of my car before it goes into the workshop!

When I owned my Twin Turbo Supra, a workshop that is now defunct after shoddy workmanship (including mine) nearly killed my engine, took a chunk out of my carbon fibre steering wheel and left dents and tool marks on my bonnet.

Happy to chat in private buddy.
