Hi all,

I’ve got a UK-spec front plate on my JDM car, but it doesn’t fit flush because of the narrow JDM bracket. I’d like to keep the UK plate shape, but before I start searching for a UK plate holder/bracket, does anyone know whether it will fit flush on a JDM bumper? They look similar to me, but thought I’d check!

Thanks

Bumpers are essentially the same if you're referring to early ones. The only issue you'll have is that you'll be left with 2 big holes in the bumper where the JDM bracket is secured.

Part number is 9621237P00 : coming back as not recognised on allcarpartsfast.co.uk so I'd suggest it's now NLA. Try Nissan, but I'm pretty sure they'll say the same as the sites seem mirrored in terms of part number recognition at least.

Thanks all, can probably figure out a way to mount over the JDM holes, looks like it’ll be more of a challenge getting hold of one in the first place! Time to look for breakers I guess :)

The UK plate mount will cover up the holes from the removed JDM plate mount anyway. Yes it will fit.

Yup - I seem to remember Gio had the UK spec plinth fitted to his silver J-spec Zed...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I think you'll find that this is not the case. The European number plate bracket is the same height as the grey moustache. The holes for the JDM bumper sit below this on the body colour section which would not be covered if the Euro bracket were fitted.

Example, even with a number plate fitted to the bracket, the holes on the bodycolour section just below would still be visible if fitting this to a JDM bumper:

Crude illustration showing where the cutouts would be. They almost go down the bottom of that painted section.

UK plate holder on JDM S1 on the left, UK plate just bolted to JDM S3 (I prefer the UK plate in the mustache as on the left - IIRC, the JDM plateholder holes had to be filled / painted)

Import size but UK legal plate on JDM S6 bumper

There is a grey area about whether the import size plate is permitted on the front - you "could" fit a full size plate. But I've never had any MOT issues (touch wood) and always keep the DVLA regs in the glove box, officer :)

Mike, I take it you got the holes filled when you mounted the UK bracket to the JDM bumper?

Yes, that's right. Here's the JDM bumper out of the box - you can see the holes:

I didn't see it before the rebuild. If I had, would have kept the Fairlady X logo - as it is, the rebuilder painted the mustache as per the book which covered it up!

Here's the same car pre-accident:

Evo photo shoot, I think.

and post accident - Silverstone 07 (in a pleasing complete coincidence, I am wearing the ZClub commemorative t-shirt of that event right now :D )

The UK plate in the charcoal gray mustache is, for me, the best looking. The gray band seems to make the front of the car "sharper" and leaner. It's also why I prefer it to 99 front bumper (and I've got a 99 car). For my stock manual TT, there didn't seem to be any cooling issues by the slight obstruction. Had there been, I'm sure they wouldn't have put it there for UK cars.

As for import plate, as you can see, I've got a short reg no so when this is done at "import" size, it's the same width as the JDM plinth:

And as comparison, here's a pic when I was changing from the blue S3 to the silver S6 showing the small import plate on the pre-99 JDM position (had one query at one MOT and said it had to be small so as not to block airflow :whistling: ) and the UK size plate on the 99 JDM position.

I wondered about air obstruction in the higher “UK” position too, but as you say it can’t be a problem. I also wondered about re-painting the moustache charcoal grey, but as my car’s black it wouldn’t make much difference!

Ah yes, you had a replacement bumper. I too prefer the UK spec holder and at times wish I'd changed my bumper or had the holes filled and bought a UK bracket and had it painted to match.

I still toy with the idea of fitting a UK rear bumper. Not because I want my car to be a UK replica but sometimes, I actually prefer it.

I put a UK spec rear bumper on mine when I imported it. Didn’t like the idea of aftermarket fog lights or re-purposing existing lights, and I prefer the way the wider plate sits on a low, wide car. Undamaged UK rear bumpers seem much easier to find on eBay than front plate mounts!

I have a repurposed reverse light, but only for MOT. I have a small bit of harness in the boot that I swap and it utilises the standard fog light switch. I just put it back to twin reverse lights after MOT as I never ever use the fog light. But yes, a permanent repurpose isn't my thing either. Aux fog lights are about as hideous as things get too!

I've never had cooling issues with the UK-positioned number plate - and don't forget the UK-spec was the same as other EU countries too... So thought would have been given to driving the Zed on the German autobahns

Of course - I too had forgotten you had a replacement bumper too....!!

But definitely prefer the UK-positioned plate too

Just to be really nitpicky (channelling Simon :D ), this:

isn't a replacement, it's the original :)

UK number plate bracket is No longer available.Good luck finding one,it took me almost 2 years to find one :tt2: Imagine that only like 5000 cars were made with this bracket, and probably less than 1000 are on the road right now.Noone is selling them, and when you find one it's usually broken because you have to remove the whole bumper to remove the bracket and no one knows,so they just try to pull them hard and they break. Also, studs for mounting them are not available separately so there is no way to buy them, you need to improvise...Also the metal strip for mounting it from behind the bumper is NLA...
