Risk it for a biscuit - bought a -potentially- broken Z

Hi all,

I bought a manual TT that had recently had an engine rebuild but still had some problems. I took a chance on it... this is generally my preferred approach, it's more fun... kind of.

When I picked up the car, I discovered that it smokes on overrun; decent plumes after engine braking at low speeds, then when the throttle is reapplied or if the engine settles at idle (typically when pulling up to a junction or slowing and accelerating between speed humps). No smoke when accelerating or at start up / idle. I have been doing a lot of googling and reading a lot of old forum threads about these symptoms, but none of them finished with a conclusive result. I will make sure that this thread has a conclusion even if it takes a while to figure out.

Advertised spec:

Engine rebuilt by Outlaw Customs

Wiseco forged pistons

Eagle rods

AEM series 1 ecu

615cc Nismo injectors

NA rear diff and hicas deleted

Rebuilt turbos

Stainless steel custom exhaust with H pipe and Greddy back boxes

HKS blow off valves

Currently running 380hp, mapped by DWR Performance

Culprit #1 - PCV

I noticed that the car had too much oil in it, and thought that maybe the PCV pipes are pulling oil up into the intake plenum during vacuum, which would then get burned off as the engine idled or accelerated. I looked into the balance tube holes and there is oil in the plenum.

I then did an oil change and deleted the PCVs for good measure (into a catch can), the pipes were full of oil! I also swapped the spark plugs from Iridium BKR7EIX (which sit too far in the head) to NGK PFR6B11C gapped to 0.035.

I have only driven the car around five miles since, at first it seemed much better but the smoke problem returned. Perhaps I need to drive it a bit more.

Should I also reroute the breathers at the front of the engine?

My next potential culprits are:

Culprit #2 - turbo seals

Culprit #3 - valve seals

Culprit #4 - piston rings

... anyone want to add to the list of possible culprits?

Cheers.

All tit for tat blaming. The car should have had the timing done BEFORE being sent to the mapper.

Why didn't you have the ECU? ECUs usually come with a base map already loaded so as to allow you to time the car.

Edited by Funkysi

True, but I would have also thought that any engine mapper worth their salt would check the timing as part of a pre dyno inspection.

Oh absolutely.

Can you please explain to me how I’m supposed to set the timing on a car with no ecu? The mapper has to upload a base map then tune the car. The timing was nothing to do with me, also it was not setup correctly and was fine at idle but not at higer rpm, your just trying to blame me again si and I have proof it’s **** all to do with me once again so crawl back into your ****ing hole and keep out of it.

Please keep it clean Mike swearing at a committee member or any other member puts a bad light on you and your garage. Just try to explain your side without breaking the clubs AUP.

Well maybe you should tell all other parties to stop talking rubbish without any proof. It would be a real shame for legal action to be taken for slander of a garage without proof of wrong doings now wouldn’t it.

Just trying to get to the bottom of it and help our new member who has asked for help. If some posts get you angry just move on to the next one and stay calm.Swearing and threating legal action is not helpfull to anybody.

Oh but saying my build is at fault and generally slagging off of me and my garage is acceptable is it? Once again I see the committee trying to get rid of the sensible ones here. It’s surprising how this place is still going at times. Anyway I’m done I’ve had my say, my garage has never been busier and I have more than enough happy customers non of which come from this place anyway. Si go **** yourself

No need for this childish rant Mike. I wish you well with your garage but after a warning you still see fit to swear at a committee member. Its not the level of acceptable discussion we accept from a member.

Guys, I appreciate the input from all. I didn't mean to cause any conflict... just trying to figure out how to get this Z healthy again.

Don’t worry about it Matt.... mikey has been banned for spouting off a fair number of times.

In terms of your engine, nothing really changes from your approach to it. Take it for a spirited blast and see if it burns off, otherwise further tests are gunna be needed

Nothing to worry about Matt sometimes members think this is a face book page and swear and throw their toys out. But all sorted and lets hope we can get you back on the road.

timing should of been at 30 @ 3000 rpm.

Im not really sure what he’s on about here. Base timing, as far as I’m aware, should be set to 15deg at idle.

What ECU is in the car?

***edit, just seen it’s an AEM..... if all ends up being well and the oil burns off, I’d strongly recommend you get that map checked!***

I took control of this thread and stand by my actions,

Oh I agree he shouldn't have bitten like that. Just not sure if the digs originally were fair.

He did then come on to give the OP some useful background which will hopefully help get things sorted.

I don't know Mike, but I can see why he got riled to be fair.

When a member drops to the level of swearing and threatens this club then that is an issue. Clear breaking of the clubs AUP and even after a warning he continued to break the rules. No mater what was said its clear Mike has past issues which still haunt him. This is our concern and he had a chance to discuss it without droping to an unacceptable level.

The replies in question are all from previous customers, that unfortunately Mike decided to offer no lifeline to after they’d forked out thousands, in build costs. I’ve personally known Mike longer than most, his business acumen appears to be lost completely since I was a customer of his.

In response to timing the car prior to tuning, I’ve never known any tuner allow a car anywhere near a dyno without the timing being checked first, refusal for the timing being set, I have seen personally on many occasions. I’d also expect a car to be checked that it’s actually running before it sees a dyno, it’s common sense for both the builder and the mapper. I’m not attempting to apportion blame herein any direction, but how a company handles an issue says everything about them. I don’t see playing blame tennis helps anyone’s situation, but with regard to the OP, what no guarantees after 2 month ???? 10k and zero warranty. Let’s hope his current customers don’t get the same issues. You can’t go on like this in business and expect a good response
