Hi I've just done a boost leek test and there seems to be a leek in to the engine, I ask tentatively, what does this mean??

Featured Replies

Could be coming from a number of places usually a loose jubilee clip on a hose on the induction pipework. Id do the test again and listen in the bay for hissing. Best method is to smoke test it if you have s garage locally that has the equipment to do it.

The air is getting into the engine itself

You’ll have to elaborate a little more than that I’m afraid...

I'm no mechanic & might be wrong but that doesn't seem to be a boost leak!

Ok if I take the oil cap of a puff of air comes out?

That’s not a boost leak. That’s excess crank case pressure, so I’m guessing it also pops it’s dipstick out from time to time.

Best take it to a garage for a leak down test

Leaking pcv valves, simple fix

Jeff

Isn’t that a rather large assumption given the lack of information?

If he's pressurised the system and removes the oil cap it will give a hiss of air?

Nope not really, just 20 years experience of doing boost leak checks on zeds :whistling:

Jeff

My point precisely..... you’re assuming it’s a boost leak because the OP has started by saying “I think I have a boost leak” and yet the symptom he has actually presented is a build up of crank case pressure that’s released when he opens the oil filler cap.

Yes, a leaking pcv is a potential cause, as is a blown piston ring or cracked ring land....

So my point still stands, given the lack of other information (is it running rough, is it using oil, does it puff smoke on acceleration or deceleration, smoke on start up, general condition of the engine, mileage, increased boost levels etc etc etc), saying it IS the pcv valve is a bit of an assumption regardless of experience. While having a leak down test will prove or disprove an internal fault (and further establish the health of the engine) and then point the finger at the PCV’s.

No “expertise” here, just enough experience to have learned logical testing is a better approach than a game of automotive pin the tail on the donkey

pin the tail on the donkey? you cheeky **** !

Excuse me? Don’t dish out the sarcasm to me if you can’t take it back!

I offer rationale for my suggestion to the OP to establish the source of his problem, questions your still presumptive solution in a polite manner and all you offer sarcasm and insults from the safety of your “retirement” office.

Do us all a favour Jeff, get off your “I know better than everyone because I’ve got 20 years experience” high horse and maybe you can start offering helpful rationale to your infinite wisdom, and keep your insults to yourself!

No idea what you beef is but wind your neck in, making you self look a right **** !

I see one person here being resonable and another being insulting. Let it lie please.

My “beef” is sarcastic replies, holier than thou attitude and you calling me a cheeky **** ..... that has a habit of getting people’s backs up Jeff.

A simple public apology will suffice

Everyone relax, you could probably have a laugh with a room full of people giving out the same kind of banter comments, in the cold harsh world of the internet though comments always appear worse than intended, I hope!

Jeff has a shitload of experience, don't know the guy, spoke once or twice years ago, but he does have a wealth of knowledge, saying its pcv valves well I'd say that is a good shout, certainly easy enough to check, if these are then checked and found to be ok, then i'm sure Jeff and others will have other ideas, but you always start in the easy places.

Come on lads, cuddle up :)
