Hi guys

I brought some new tyres and received delivery today. I was surprised to see that it looks like they were made in 2013. Is this ok or should I expect new tyres to be produced a lot more recently than this?

Cheers,

Chris.

Personally. I that that's a bit old for a new tyre.....what brand are they and who supplied them?

I've got new tyres arriving this week - I'll let you know the dates on them.

I would send it back. If you paid for a 'new' tyre and 'new tyre' is what you should receive. Whilst it's not been on a vehicle, automotive rubber still has a finite life. 6 years is generally the advisory. Who knows how they've been stored.

new tyres are new tyres if they unused, regardless of their age.

for competition and track use, then how they are stored is important, as it could severely affect performance, especially 'wet' tyres and more so on bikes.

this happens a lot with the online discount tyre retailers, as that is why they get offered cheaper than "new" stock

but for general car road use, then that sort of age should be fine as long as they are not cracked from bad storage.

how many miles are you likely to do? if they are not likely to be on the car more than 2 years, then i think they would be fine.

I would return them, no decent place will sell you a tyre older than 2 years.

Rubber vulcanises with age, no matter the storage conditions, so it hardens and handling/braking will be worse.

When buying tyres I always try and get the newest possible.

Just to echo the what said by others, could be a mistake but sending you five year old tyres is bad, not illegal I might add, but refuse them on the basis their shelf life is almost spent, was it a dealer or private sale?

:blushing: Well after hearing all of your comments on how tyres should be new I thought it best to double check the date before complaining to BlackCircles tomorrow. I got my numbers mixed up, they were actually made on the 26th week of this year. Thanks again for all your help and advice guys!

 A complaint that the 3 month old tyres that you received being too old would have been very entertaining!

While we’re on the subject of tyres, is it worth swapping the wheels over for winter storage to avoide flat spotting or does it take a long time to flat spot them standing?

I just increase the pressure for the Winter.

If you have the space I find that rolling the car back and forth by a ~1/4 revolution of the wheels

each week works fine.

They look great Jeff and good quality. Price is high and from the USA so I tracked down a cheaper version from a UK supplier. They also do club discount so I have just emailed them for the 10% club discount for us.
