This has been covered before but I can’t find the thread, I am looking for details of the stock 300zx in various guises eg SWB NA Slkck top manual, LWB NA Manual, to get an idea of the differences. Just as they came “claimed” as stock? Can anyone point me in the right direction please? I’m specifically interested in the differences of a NA slicktop manual and a stock TT LWB Manual.

There are lots of different figures published for the same cars . UK US and Aussie car mags all give different figures.

0 to 60 is a very limited and arbitrary assessment of any car and does bear much relevance to driving under normal road conditions.

6 seconds for the TT stock I believe, its through the gears they wake up though

In the real world your probably right. Car and Driver managed a flat 5 second time and 5.2-5.4 is widely quoted. These tests are carried about by professional drivers though in good conditions and new cars. 25+ years later, on worn bushes, pot hole riddled UK roads and Bill from Scarborough who works in Sainsbury’s, who lets be honest has had too many kebabs and pies is going to struggle to get his 300Z to 60 before his mobile disco in the back changes dance track. Less Pub talk, more drive...

The only reference to Car and Driver I could see was this 1990 test......at 6.7sec

1990 Nissan 300ZX - Car and Driver

https://www.caranddriver.com/reviews/1990-nissan-300zx-road-test

Nissan should rename itself "the Phoenix Motor Corporation." Like the wondrous bird of ancient legend, the Japanese automaker has burned the weary persona ...

Top speed‎: ‎143 mph

Zero to 60 mph‎: ‎6.7 sec

Autocar and Motor UK test in 1990 gave a 5.6 0 to 60 time. Plus a 1/4 mile time of 14.4 at 100mph terminal.

Road and Track in the USA tested a turbo at 6.5 secs in 1989. And in 1990 an NA at 7.1 secs.

In 1992 Nissan GB claimed 5.9 secs for a manual and 7.5 secs for an auto.

In 1995 Motor Trend tested a turbo at 5.5 secs The Stillen GTZ gave the same magazine a 4.7 0 to 60 in the previous year. 465 bhp.

So figures all over the place all over the world.

Exactly Pete, all over the place. I can’t find that 5 second reference myself but I recall it. The difference between a 5.4 and 6 is tiny. If you really want to know, go try. It’s not like a modern car with launch control, everything is a manual input. Your own 0-60 could be 8 seconds.

When my old green TT Zed was first chipped and an still an auto I got a 4.7 second 0 - 60 That surprised me, so I did it again and got the same result

It all depends on the stae of tune, the road coditions, temperature etc

It all depends on the state of tune, the road conditions, temperature etc

And how it is measured.......

GPS timing at tracks now has come on a long way since 1990.

And there is always a difference between self timed and independent measurements.:thumbup1:

Your own 0-60 could be 8 seconds.

Mine is 5.9 sec......with printed independent evidence:biggrin:

The difference between a 5.4 and 6 is tiny.

The difference between 5.4 and 6 sec is 0.6 sec.

That is a huge difference in some respects.

In my case it took me two seasons of running at York Raceway to drop my 1/4 mile time 0.3 sec.

I probably had 30 or so runs in the 14.5 - 14.7 bracket before I finally managed a 14.3 run and I then felt I could never do better with the car in that state of tune.

On the other hand a driver with limited practice of launching on track would see 0.6sec variations easily.

Indeed and I don’t think we can honestly say that the average owner is experienced in that respect. It’s a good time for an NA that Pete. Obviously your down on power but less weight and better gearing for the power level.

Out of interest Pete have you weighed your Slicktop?

Just to add to the driver aspect, we had a long term customer with a UK spec tt auto, fitted with one our chips and running 13 psi he ended up winning his class every year, even taking on Skylines, this was with no weight saving or spare wheel removed etc., just turn up and race and then drive home.

Later he did run semi slick rear tyres as he was chasing tenths of seconds, most of his runs had amazing reaction times with low off the line times that made his car a class leader, he used to say how on more than once he took on and beat guys in Skylines and such who has spent thousands and he beat them with a stock car.

After some three years of this his auto box was showing some odd behaviour and it came in to the workshop, we remove the sump and cleaned the strainer refilling with fresh fluid and it carried on for another three seasons at least, just shows those auto boxes are not that bad.

Hi Jeff

Remember how quick the green Zed was when you first chipped and boosted it ?

Thats when I got the 4.7 second time

All dead right.....

…..And when comparing times to other cars, do remember that principle would similarly apply to those tests too...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I will check with the recovery truck company as most of my 0-60mph is done on the back of a low loader........ :innocent:

Watching my Z disintegrate on my driveway!!!
