Members : 10,155, Active Members : 500 ( 5th July 2018 )

Question for the admin, does the figures above not phase you at all?

I have taken an hour long look around the members list and it is "shocking" the shear amount of members listed who have not even been on line here for upwards of 10 years, yes 10 years is almost grotesk, why are these still even in the data base ? what is the point? it just uses space and looks desperate.

The forum has and will continue to decline as the numbers of cars / owners decline that is an obvious and uncontrollable future of course, but is it not time to take stock of the real forum membership we have and stop this silly "we have 10k members" announcement and tighten it up, reinvent it somehow, nothing worse than been a dinosaur in 2018 seen way too many of them the last few years, I mean we do not want to be another Woolworths eh? !!

Personally I think the forum looks flabby, with too many area`s of which some are both unvisited and pointless, the latest attempt to keep traders by asking for donations for the fees was ill conceived and bordering again on desperate.

I am sure some here will think I am been harsh or not forum spirited, but just look around, the forum tech is first class as is the look, the content that is available and the work put in by the admin etc. but... really ... lets loose the flab get the power back into the place...!!

Members unite !!!

I had a message via my registered email address from one of my old forums, fccuk.org (great forum!), telling me that they were having a forum members clear out and that unless each member logged in within however many days their account would be deleted. Seems like they were suffering from the same problem and wanted a tidy up. Very good way of dealing with the issue I thought.

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the comment - and no; I don't think you are being harsh or against the spirit of the forum. And yes; it does concern us. We have discussed these matters at the last couple of AGMs and among ourselves thereafter.

What we are all agreed upon, is that we do need a change of image. We have decided upon the "owners club" road, as opposed to a forum; but have not really had the time - or if I'm honest, the impetus to take that next step. And another year has rolled by, with the 2018 AGM in just over a week.

Whilst we also note the members vs active members comment, we are all very much aware of this; indeed I have that same thought when filling out the NEC show application each year. Not for a moment do I kid myself that we have 10,000 members; I just work on the 500.... And in all honesty, looking at the online traffic and subscription receipts, that sounds optimistic...

We are all too aware that membership will dwindle as the cars become fewer and far between.... We also still have the same plans to refresh the forum look.....

….And with the AGM on Sunday 15th, we will once again look to the members for what they would like to see from us as a club and forum.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I dont want to commit myself too heavily but i do have experience in html, css, js if it is of any help in rejuvenating the site. This vbulletin stuff is quite dated and limiting it feels like.

if we clear out the old member accounts, then all of the old historic posts going back to day one will also lose their poster detail and context.

other than that, there is no specific reason they are kept except that it is easier to just install the upgrades etc and convert existing data.

a lot of that number will also be deleted spammer accounts, as we do get a lot of those too

What did you do about that? Did you login to retain your membership? Now will you wait another 10 years before logging in again when you get the same email again?

It’s probably still a good idea though, even if it’s sparks and interest in just one member to rekindle an old flame!

Its actually illegal to email anyone in the database if they haven't expressly gave permission to do so.

If that email was recent and you never gave any consent in the last month or so then they just broke the new rules of the GDPR.

So because of GDPR we can no longer email all the old accounts to invite them back.

Indeed, I thought we voted out of all that *****cks

Maybe they will reverse it, probably not though. At least it cuts down on the nuisance calls. I told one the other day he was in violation of blah blah, got rid of him quick enough. From what I understand even the top dogs are bit confused about exactly it’s applied and what’s exempt.

All I do know is it is a pain in the arse for small businesses and associations. They should just ban PPI companies from operating.

Can I ask if it is possible to keep old members forum names, but delete their personal information from their profiles?

Wouldn't this keep archived and old posts showing the member name only to say who posted it and satisfy GDPR as they would no longer have any personal information only a nick name as such?

No names, date of birth, contact info, so they would become anonymous, satisfying GDPR!

It would be nice to have our own wiki / technical knowledge base that is easy to search and formatted in sections like the original Nissan Manual layout?

BR for all brake how to's, etc....

We could add our own write ups and photo's to help one another, as Jeff has done for us for many years..... (Thanks Jeff)...

Lee Bird has done the iPad install, Redwine helped me so much with my welding and fabricating sills mission a few years back...... there is so much talent and knowledge in here.....

AndrewG with his knowledge of all things Z..... etc......

So many people here who have helped others so much....

Thanks

Russ

We can keep anything, if those specific members give us [written] permission to do so.

Under GDPR - as far as my understanding goes - a member (or former member) can write to us, asking what information we hold on them; and can then demand we delete it (or part f it). We have to comply with such demands and requests within a set reasonable time.

Well I didn’t vote for it...

I like the idea of the Nissan Manual sections broken down into the technical forums. Each section could start with the actual contents of the manual, and then various tech posts etc can be added after it. Maybe have a seperate thread as a contents page. Further threads related to the same topic could be merged with existing ones to avoid reputition.

Lots of work, time and effort to get started though which is always the downfall. I believe many owners would probably be unaware of the online manual so this would potentiallygive greater visibility whilst generating forum traffic.

I’m currently in 2 minds as to whether this thread should be in a subscribed members forum or not!?

I did log back in. My account holds information on my build that I can’t remember, details of who I sold her to, traceable info where the car is now (not that I would want my old love back), contacts and if I want to sell some of my spares I still have in the loft people can trace my profile.:innocent:

I’m happy they emailed me and I’m confident they have abused my information. I also doubt that what they’ve done match’s to what I’ve said, that’s just what I think they’ve done. If you want I could forward the email to you, via pm, as it might be a good template should we chose to go down the same route.

In relation to the GDPR stuff, all other sites and forums have emailed me to say I need to opt in etc. My team at work have our businesses data protection liaison officers too so we are quite all over it. I guess it would come down to hat is actually personal data etc.

In response to Jeff, I still love the forum, but I wish more people would post etc. As an example since Russ mentioned it... in th past, if someone did something like an iPad install (I remember an iPod one years ago), there'd have been loads of comments, whether people like it or not. I think there's less threads about what peopl are doing day to day as people just put it in the what I did today thread.

I have all the rare bits you can't find :tongue:

Also permission is not needed, there are many other easier ways to be allowed to store data

As long as it doesnt involve things like religious , political or sexual beliefs in the data , then to achieve the aims of the organisation ( or something like that cant remember exactly) is valid, and keeping the old posts making sense is a valued aim

Also i believe you can email the database if you believe they have previously shown they may be interested, as long as you are not selling anything

I have actually copied quite a lot of info that I have in spreadsheets as I was going to try and make a technical thing. I have all the wiki spaces pages (imagine how many hours that took), as well as quite a few of JaffTTs tech threads as well as I generally find them very helpful. I'll share once (and if) I get everything together as I thought something like that would really benefit people.

Almost 156,000 threads, over 1.7 million posts, over 10,000 people have registered to join the club from its birth and we have 500 active (most not so active) members. Nice to have this info and yes we do need to have a refresh and keep updating but......... this club is held together by a small number of Committee members and only a few can change and update the site and only one who is an expert at doing so. We all work and need family time then do our best for the club so forgive us if sometimes we are not full on at maintaining the site. Also we only have a handful of members who see past the "help me posts" and work very hard at giving help and want to make the club stronger and better.

To summarise in my opinion the Committee and its members do ok maybe even better than ok lets say we all do a great job on here. Nothing wrong at pointing things out and glad to see a member takes time to analyse where we are and what should be done but its a thankless task that only a 300zx enthusiast can do. Enjoy the sun Jeff after three weeks of it here I know you can get bored of it. :)
