if you’ve got a forged VG fitting an inferior SRis lunacy.

New to using forums so still trying to work my way round it, thanks for the link gaz

Yeah i know im just not enjoying the engine at the moment, naybe its just a phase and i need another project. Also im at the point where i want to go standalone ecu, bigger turbos and bigger injectors so super expensive as everything seems to come from the usa and have import tax and high shipping costs, also need a new wiring loom as im sure its causing me issues. Then i saw the sr in a z and the simplicity was amazing.

Thing is getting that SR in there isn’t free. Extracting even what can be achieved on a stock VG out of the SR requires a fair bit of work. What stage are you at with your VG? If you’ve got a forged VG then the power limit between you and 600hp is what your prepared to spend on bolt ons. A good tune a set of aftermarket turbos and injectors and your going to be seeing 500hp.

What do you want and what do you think you can’t or aren’t achieving?

End goal 500whp, i can do all the work myself as im a technician and have access to a workshop 24/7, just researching the rest of the bolt ons and it looked like mega money as i need 2 of most things rather than one. The sr parts looked more readily available in the uk. If i lived in america then yeah roll on the vg build lol not sure whether to buy a standalone and possible get that tuned to see what i make maybe put bigger injectors too

I've seen forged SRs fail at sub 400hp haha.

The swap will be incredibly expensive as subframes will need to be cut and welded, and a custom exhaust needs making up. Power steering lines need to be on the other side iirc, same with fuel.

i can weld and was going to go electric power steering for simplicity if i can, fuel lines are no issue the cars been apart a lot its got full drift works suspension so subframes have been down a couple times along with the engine too, surely even a 400hp would suffice. i like the v6 too but im not sure thats why im here good to have opinions and help from other experienced z32 owners, also who is the tuning god for the z32 around here?

My first thoughts on the SR are the normal ones... Are you mad! Why downsize to that! That's a lot of work for 300hp!

But, my second set of thoughts are a bit more balanced. It would be easier to work on. I can imagine it would be cheaper after the initial outlay, as you say, one turbo, 4 injectors etc. I don't know what the weights are but it must be lighter and it may be possible to make a zed really handle with one. You may be able to cover some costs selling the VG and it would be fun to get it all done right.

But it would be very easy to take the vg out, have a right F*** on trying to get an SR20 in there and end up unfinished and have to abandon it, or worse get it working and be disappointed with the result.

A SWB slicktop NA would be similar in lightness and performance to a SR20 LWB targa.

But hey, you know all this. Do whatever gets you excited about the zed  I have some advice for making a fun VG zed. But I know cock all about SR20s

my first thoughts were the same but then i researched it a little saw more projects and finished builds and it peaked my interests i believe you can save around 100kg on the engine alone plus keeping the z32 standard from transmission back is sweet too, i like simplicity and think the sr can handle good reliable power in most cases. i assume no one has done the swap here then? maybe its an american thing also what turbo/injector/engine management setup are you guys using for the vg30dett, parts and where did you source them rough cost ect

Mine is an unopened Auto engine with a manual gearbox I got it with 45'000 miles on it. Before 60'000 I had over 400 at the rear wheels and now it has 87'000 miles on it.

My mods have been all intake based, cooling, mapping of the stock ecu... There was a lot of Refurbing or replacing stock for stock. Like new 340 injectors, fuel lines and regulators. New vac lines. New loom. BDE goose honk kit. Big intercoolers. A full decat and downpipe back exhaust.Selin. Some deletes, and light bits.

So it's nothing too crazy but the car has responded really well. It is very fast and has run 16psi for nearly 30'000 miles! On the original auto turbos and internals.

Just lots of oil changes and I always warm it up and cool it down.

The next step is manifolds and downlipes for me.

VG30s can be great.

that sounds really reliable then what did you have done to map the stock ecu just a chip? nistune? i may have to invest in a new loom too. maybe ill give it another chance haha also who tuned it?

Haha. The least popular man in the world. Turbo Noz. He used nistune iirc. I specifically asked him to do a reliable tune though. I said to him turn the car up to 10 then knock it back to 8 I dont want mega power, I want as much as can be trusted.

I wasn't on the forum around the time he left but I think he was blamed or possibly even responsible for blowing some cars up.

He was always fine with me, if a little too laid back and hard to get a timeline out of.

Haha. Totally agree with the laid back bit. He tuned my old zed a couple of years ago when everyone was speaking much more highly of him. He tuned my zed to 427bhp and 444 ft/lbs. I did about 18000 miles in it in 18 months before selling. To be fair, it was very reliable.

Same as you, had a manual box but an auto engine/turbos. Just normal breather mods.
