I've bought another Gloria for parts but the cambelt had slipped a tooth at idle. Is the engine a tolerance engine with clearance between the piston & valves or will it more than likely have bent a valve?

What other damage could it have done?

Featured Replies

If it's one tooth you should be alright, but They are interference so probably bent a valve if many more than 1. Mark off the head and pistons as being unusable just in case, but they might be fine.

It is an interference engine, but very occasionally lady luck plays a part even with a snapped cambelt.

If the cambelt has jumped one tooth but is otherwise sound you should be OK. Check the cambelt tensioner to see

if it is doing its job. If you can get the engine to turn over on the starter then a compression test procedure will reveal

bent valves (assuming the piston/bores and the head gaskets are good).

Unfortunately I bought the car with the engine partially stripped. The belt was already cut off. Luckily it came with a complete belt & tensioner kit.

As it's part stripped should I just pull the heads off & have a look?

You can throw a belt on and compression test it, or take the head off and have a look. The compression test will give you more valuable information as to if the engine is good or not.

I edited my comment as I answered in a rush. But there is some leeway with a skipped tooth, it won't run well/at all but one tooth out it shouldnt have broken anything.

Thanks again. I think I'll take your advise & throw a belt on to check compression. Top man cheers.

Personally, I’d pull the engine out. Even if the internals are fine, it’s a perfect opportunity to replace the 25+ year old seals around the engine as well as access otherwise difficult to reach hoses for the Power Steering, fuel lines etc and refresh if needed, saving you from having to strip the engine down a second time in the future after a oil leak etc

Na put it together, only a half days work and you can fire it up, if you pull the engine it becomes a project.... and we all know how most of those end up !

Do a leak down test through the plug hole ensuring the valves on the cylinder being tested are both in the closed posistion.

You wont need to do any work to the engine to do that.

Sounds good to me. Although I’d pop them Cams out, there’s not much work left to do that and the timings compromised anyway. That way the valves will all be closed and you can rotate the bottom end independently and perform a leak down. Soon be obvious if esp on the inlet a valve is banana shaped.

If you get the crank at the right angle you can turn all the cams without valve to piston contact allowing the leak down test to be performed very quick.
