I'm currently debating doing away with my boot spoiler and going wingless. What are peoples' thoughts please?

I know that, arguably, the SWB is the better suited platform for this anyway. Just wondered what others' thoughts might be... :)

Do Nissan still stock the 89 spoiler? I’ve tried getting in touch with Ash but I’m getting nothing back.

Thanks Si. Unfortunately I’m not as clued in to part numbers like some of you guys. Do you have a reference for finding part numbers or are they all in your head?

I highly advise you invest in an original. They can be futureproofed. The main benefits are, they are nice to the touch, great moulding, so no waviness and most importantly, they actually fit beautifully. I have yet to see a 'replica' that actually fits properly or is identical to the original. They bulge out in odd places, they don't sit snug and they are horrible to the touch.

Done. See above post. The part numbers are from nissan4u which is bona-fide.

Yes I’m happy to by original. Sorry to be a pain but why are there two different part numbers, is one UK and the other JDM? I need UK.

Nissan either would have changed manufacturing suppliers and/or made minor changes to construction. Sometimes they are also a superceded part number. It's not uncommon for what appears to be an identical part to have a number of different part numbers.

FWIW, JDM and Euro early style spoilers are the same. It's only the brakelight/blank that is different and you can simply swap that over from your existing spoiler.

Did you bother with all the bolts and strip or do the originals come off ok?

EDIT

Interesting that the date given for you spoiler in Jan 94. Mines a May 94 although that will be registered.

I'm not sure I understand your question.

So in that picture you posted of the spoiler it showed all the clips, nuts and bolts and a stop that runs along the bottom of the spoiler. Did you buy these parts or were you able to save the parts removed from you original spoiler?

The metal fixings 3,6,10 and 11 (in the parts diagram) came with the J6030-42P28 part. I didn't use the

plastic clips (item 4) and adhesive strips 2,14 and 16. They don't come with the new spoiler part. In my

experience the adhesive strips fail to remain watertight and allow water ingress which in turn damages

the spoiler with rot.

To provide a permanent water tight seal, I bonded the spoiler (Sikaflex or similar) to the tailgate along

the inside of the leading edge (where the adhesive strips would have gone) and along the bottom edge

of the "wings".

The picture below shows the metal fixings (arrowed) and I've circled two of the six plastic fixing points that

are along the leading edge of the spoiler.

If you are removing an old stock spoiler then you will find it easier to remove the spoiler if you break off the

six plastic fixing clips from inside the boot lid. Use a long screwdriver or chisel. You may then find that the

spoiler will lift away without needing to cheese wire the adhesive strip on the leading edge.

I do wish my car had the early style spoiler instead of the 94+ one. I just think the earlier one suits it so much better. Can’t even swap mine to an earlier one without leaving big holes in my bootlid where the front bits of the spoiler mounts.

Well you weld the holes up.

I’d rather not **** with it tbh. If I was going to change spoiler I’d get a new bootlid.

I wouldn't get a new tailgate, rust free ones arent common nowadays. Any proficient bodyshop can weld it up and painted with the spoiler painted at the same time.

Then don’t. I used to hate that spoiler but it’s really grown on me over the years.

I much prefer the earlier spoiler but I’m not inclined to start grinding a perfectly good tailgate. Hence why if I swapped it I’d rather just get another altogether. The current spoiler isn’t offensive I just think it looks a bit stuck on and makes the back end look narrower and taller.

I'm very much into the look of the moulded in ducktails.

Mine came with one, although the paint and filler job are now peeling away from it like it has leprosy, if done properly I think they're smoother than a stock wing but more 'there' than having nothing at all.
