Hello the Forum, time to get excited and plan big things.

I've been building my car in my head for years, sometimes I do it in real life too, but now it's time to plan the next step.

I have bought a house! With a bloody enormous garage 5.23m x 5.26m.

house.jpg

I am going to compliment my house with 1x fridge, 1x sofa, 1x bed, 1x broadband router and an engine hoist

I think it was Joely P who referenced an American tuning study that showed how good a zed can be with stock turbos and better pipework. That is basically where my car is now. I want the fittest 500bhp in the country. From 3000rpm to the red line. My car is a bit like that now but with 400 and something. Those who have been in it it's a great road car.

So, the plan is engine out, gearbox away for rebuild or a new 98 spec. I have the full compliment of shifter bits and pieces from Z1

shifter.png

I am going to put a new friction disc in, because my clutch has done about 25'000 miles of enthusiasm and torque (very bloody well i may add)

clutch.png

Awesome product, and it feels like a normal clutch  It is not as grabby as radio presenter from the 80s like people think they are.

I will then pull the engine and finish my EGR delete which I couldn't physically remove. Clean it, and re-hose and re-loom it (again) as required. Clean up the engine bay and fit some of these...

ash spec.jpg

OPINIONS PLEASE :)

And some divorced downpipes, again, opinions please.

I expect I'll keep my hard working little auto turbos, 88'000 miles on them, 35'000 at 16psi and a few at 22psi! #boost jet mistakes

I just want it to be the best version of itself that it can be.

Chat to me forum, lets get my zed to the next level of awesome

Hi Tom,

For breathing you might want to look at the selin dual intake to maximise your use of stock turbos.

Ooh, yeah, nearly forgot, I'm going to put the battery in the boot, possibly a light weight one, advice very welcome. In order to free up some engine bay space, that will let me move my fuel system into the battery tray and fit a swirl pot, because I genuinely do get fuel starvation (only on the track your honour) and change to a parallel stock fuel rail set up.

I expect I'll also be fitting 2 widebands :pinch: money!

Hi Tom,

Well ahead of you Alic, I have one and it is great

An addition which has already arrived for my garage...

Pretty cool eh :) They're not perfect to be honest, but it brings about a fun game of spot the difference for my garage guests

Did you upgrade to larger intake piping or not, Tom? I can't remember.

 Cheers Gary, It's in Conwy but it will always be a welcome pitstop to any forum member passing by.

Mondo, I have these...

I will probably get these because the lower pipes are still acordion plastic... and I want 'more' potential for boost leaks

I also have some enormous either Ash Spec Massives or Bell intercoolers, one was out of stock and i got the other, i cant remember which.

Sounds like a ‘beer call’ and engine pull around your gaff then Tom!?!? Looks like a lovely garage with the added bonus of a place to eat and sleep. You obviously put the garage at the top of your house wish list.

The build looks interesting.......and expensive. I’ll come over to Valley in the New Year after my rebuild is done by Jim and pay you a visit matey.

You’ll have to start a ‘build thread’ so we can keep track of your progress.

Nice one mate, see you soon.

Very nice Tom. Look forward to the build thread, and seeing the vast Zed cave, that you will be kitting out. :cool2:

Nice to see someone focusing on the delivery of the power too, not just as much as possible [emoji106]

Advice please guys, I'm planning my exhaust mods. Which are the best.

I would like the Ash Spec manifolds and the best divorced downpipes available. But the range on CZP/Z1 isn't as large as it used to be.

What do people advise? (Standard turbos and a Japspeed 2.5 inch downpipe back exhaust)

  • Author

They look very similar to Z1's there isn't the choice there once was. The Labree units are discontinued by czp/z1 and I want to save on shipping so dont want to go to a 3rd place.

I may very well go for those. Any divorced unit is an upgrade and I could swap them the day the turbos die (hopefully in 2020 something)

I went for the AMS 3" expansion downpipes, Tom. A replica of the Speciality Z ones, but obviously cheaper.

Aside from a small tap from a hammer being required during fitting, I've had no issues whatsoever and they've obviously helped my breathing. :thumbup1:

Whats that, stamp duty is gone  3 weeks before I pay it. Hahahaha

[Tom picks up the phone]

"Hello Z1... I'll have all the fast bits please... yeah... all of them, particularly the ones that say 'track use only'. Oh and a weather strip me targa...cheers!"

I'll have a think Si. I'd need more exhaust mods to fit them.

No cats and a japspeed 2.5 inch X pipe from the downpipe back.

Nothing special but it sounds good to me.

So there is loads of room for improvement with the manifolds and the downpipes.

I'm going to build an extension and paint the floor with hangar floor paint

Isn't it lovely :)

It has good electric lighting, that side door and it has a separate detached two storey living building :thumbup1:

Honestly mate, if you’re aiming for the power levels you want I would suggest in the strongest possible terms you look at a standalone ECU. Yes it’s expensive, but with key sensors and a sensible engine protection setting it will save an engine when something unexpected happens.... and they’re a dam sight cheaper than an engine rebuild.

On top of that you can have features like Boost by gear to optimise traction in each gear, traction control, antilag (if you’re that way inclined), flat shifting etc etc etc

Learn from my mistakes mate. Just because a stock ECU can be tuned to provide X amount of power, doesn’t mean it’s the right tool for the job

Just my 2p’s worth

Cracking garage aswell!

I understand there are many benefits to a stand alone, I reckon I will fit one at some point, as the plan is to keep car till roughly 2070. I spose there will probably be a rebuild in that time too

I am kind of at the power levels I want. My build has been an ethos of efficiency and "is that the best way, or best part to do that task."

I will get some power in this next run of upgrades, but it's not stressy boosty lots of fuel power, it's free breathing power.

I don't want bigger turbos or anything, I like the car how it is now, this next step is just like my car after 3 months of avocados and gym, the same but a bit leaner, fitter and healthier

It's time to reveal my glovebox of fantabulous wonderment...

20171202_120825.jpg

Look at that work of art, made with coat hangers hot glue and a bucket, just made really well by me :)

So the reason I bring it up, is that is my protection system. The gauges are Water temp, Oil temp and Oil Pressure. They go blue when low and red when high. They flash when they are very low or high and when all is well they go white. Low oil px is orange not blue. But even better, they link into the two LEDs that some soldering ninja has put in there!

20171202_120809.jpg

One is blue, the other is red and when all is in limits they are both out. They are my master caution system, to make me open the engineer's panel ! I mean glove box

And the other two? Fuel pressure against boost. And no, they are not pissed, they are rotated so that at full throttle both needles go straight up and down like a little white 11 to glance at.

The switch between them is the gauge backlight. I love my car :):)

The house is coming together. The car is there, it's had alook into the mountains, an awesome drive, and is cleaned and ready for work.

It's a work in progress

I'm gonna swap the psp for a gameboy.

It's meant to be cars, guitars and games, top to bottom. A little museum of life trinkets :)

Looks great Tom get your car stuff in there a beer fridge some music and close the door.

Yup, I could not have said it better myself...........

Good luck in your new home Tom!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
