Hi guys

Back in the day (don't ask how many "days" ago this was :wheelchair:) I used to organise rolling road sessions for car clubs that I used to be part of. I was wondering if there might be any demand for something like that here? I used to go to http://www.surreyrollingroad.co.uk/, we'd get 6-8 of us together for a morning meet, test the engines then drive off to a nice pub for a bite and bragging session.:clap:Not looking to do this until mid to late October, cars with Jim getting some TLC.

If you're interested post you name up and once I have rough numbers I'll see if we can get a morning slot a possible discount.

Cheers,

Chris.

That's right & you have some valid points.

1)However if you upgrade X & y do you not end up with z?

2)Don't the modifications carried out on a car give the owner an idea of the output?

3)How do manifacturers work out the cars output?

4)Also there are other ways of checking the engines health.

Having said that if that's what owners want fair enough.

1) nope, not as simple as that every engine has marginal difference so will respond to modifications slightly differently.

2) yes an idea, but why wouldn’t you want to confirm that idea on a dyno? I’ve lost count of the amount of cars I’ve seen expecting X but actually getting significantly less due to previously unknown faults on the car

3) 99.9% of modern performance cars are subject to a dyno run before leaving the assembly line

4) yes there are. Diagnostics checks, compression tests, leak down tests, emissions tests, boost leak tests are all methods of checking an engines health. So is a dynomometer. How many times have we seen cars on this forum show a zero codes yet have a MAF that’s inaccurate or have a lazy lambda sensor. These type of marginal faults would show on a the Air Fuel Reading on a dyno run. A dyno is simply a tool that when used correctly is as good as any other diagnostic method in establishing the health of an engine

In my mind, if you have any doubts that your car would have an issue with performing a short full throttle run on in any circumstance, whether on the road track or dyno, then it shouldn’t go anywhere near a dyno. The car has a fault, so use the other tools available and sort it.

ANY car that is in full working health will have ZERO issues performing a run on a dyno. And IF it goes pop on a dyno the simple fact is that it was simply a matter of WHEN not IF it was going to let go.

So diverge off 3)

Manufacturers are on the most part told what sort of power figure they need to make by the marketing management people. I'm sure if they wanted design a stronger more powerful engine but it wouldn't suit the budget, their lineup or reliability. In the 90s, unofficially the gentleman's agreement limited Japanese manufacturers to 280hp (or 300hp sometimes said), though the supra, 300zx and skyline can exceed that quite easily under not much stress. Indeed some of the cars are restricted down to a certain horsepower.

So all we are doing as owners, is putting the performance where we feel it deserves, or just to have a bit more fun. If power doesn't interest you that's fine, leave it be.

As above for me. I have no expectations of power, I had Jim go through the car less that 200 miles ago and he found and fixed any issues he observed. Now I want another professional take a look at my car, in a way that Jim couldn’t, to see if there may be other issues to address.

Really looking forward to meeting a few of the members to and taking insperation from their cars. :cool3:

Not uncommon these days for new engines to spend time on the dyno being checked over is it? Even if they are no where near the car they will be fitted to.

As Ali says depending on the date I'll come watch, mine was dyno'd by ssr tail end of last year, haven't changed much since so not much point me going again, although might do

The date is fast approaching now. Can those on the list please confirm you’re still up for it please. Those that were interested in coming for a chin wag please can you also confirm and I’ll look into sorting out a route to go for a drive and pit stop somewhere. :thumbup1:

Still good for me. Won’t be in the Zed, though as she’s at the paint shop.

I recently had my car mapped,

Those reading may benefit from a few pointers from a chap who spent months getting ready,

1) I had a brand new set of Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres fitted as my old continentals were 7 years old, The car had done 30 miles on said new tyres, before the pass rear blew out on the dyno, So check your tyres, make sure pressures are correct ( as I did) and hope for the best, its quite alarming when a tyre lets go,

2) Boost leaks, I had smoke tested mine, checked everything, and lo and behold, still had some leaks when hooked up to a proper smoke detector.

3) Ensure your cooling system is A1, The OEM rubber coolant pipes may look okay , however mine are old, and were rotten, as was displayed in fine form when the main radiator bottom hose decided to split,

A few extra checks as above , may well save some serious pain, and possibly damage on the day.

Sayers

Could we look to reboot this in the summer? Mid July or August most of us will have cars on the road by then.
