Not that many will still have stock brakes but, how good are they? I'm going to rebuild the calipers but I'm just wondering what people think as to how good they are

Thanks dudes. I guess they'll do for a while though until I find some decent brakes at an acceptable price right

Service the calipers, fit Audi S8 345mm front discs (if you have larger after market wheels) and make the spacers to stand the calipers away from the hub centre toward the outer circumference of the disc.

Great brakes at very little costs.

If you have the standard wheels then I wish you the best of luck because they are p**s poor.

I have standard brakes, over 70mph I have to stamp on them.

Stock are half decent if they're in good condition. Mine did just fine however now that I've fitted Brembos all round with larger front disks I get much less fade.

The stock brakes were very good when new, but like everything they are made up of many components and as those age the overall braking performance drops away, and when "upgraded" brakes are fitted they are in general new, but often the upgraded items are let down with other components within the braking system.

It starts with the master cylinder, if this is worn then it cannot work at its best even when you have new calipers and discs, the brake servo another source of wear and tear, including the one way check valve, wear here will increase required foot pressure and pedal travel. the brake fluid, often forgotten is essential to be changed within the maintenance schedule or it will cause increase pedal movement and increased fade.

So it is not as simple as it looks, in the workshop I saw many variations of stock brakes and bigger brakes, and there was always a compromise somewhere, saying that I maybe saw a handful of zeds with grubby old calipers and dirty looking master cylinder that had awesome brakes ? always puzzled me that one!

Yeah good point, I always try and get round to refurbishing/upgrading the brake system on every car I own.

Good fluid, lines, caliper seals/possibly new pistons and good discs/pads should see a good improvement over 25yr old badly maintained systems.

Much better investment than just sticking new 4/6/8 pots with a failing BMC and old fluid but that should be common sense tbf.

The Sumitomo's on these is pretty much the same as GTO's and Supra's however Supra's are circa 320mm rather than sub 300mm found on the GTO's(mk1s) and Z's.

This sounds interesting. Thank you.

The car in question is the blue wide arch one which has 19" wheels. I'm not really too sure what you mean by making the spacers to stand the calipers away from the hub centre toward the outer circumference of the disc. Sorry if I just sound dumb here!

Probably worth giving a little more context on this and thanks for the response.

So, when I got the car, it had no brake pedal feel at all. Nothing! It was thought to be the servo due to it looking terrible (and it really did when I got it!). I therefore changed the servo (what a PITA getting under the dash) and I've also changed the BMC too. The fluid has been completely flushed and is all brand new but I then found the calipers were seized as you know. I've bought the Big Redd caliper rebuild kit that you suggested previously. The disks look pretty decent apart from a little surface rust off the cost just sitting around for years. So I think in general, the other components should be decent now.

He means caliper brackets Lee. These would move the calipers up more than where they mounted to the hub, the brackets bolt to the hub and the calipers bolt to the brackets:thumbup1:

I will evenuatlly. I just don't know when lol. Money isn't so much the problem... but I don't want to pay skyline tax which just seems silly here days. Plus th car is more show, than go so more thinking what's realistically worth it for the little use it'll get

I've got some bought off mondo here, I removed them though.

One of the brackets needs re-doing and need new bolts. Come with Brembo discs that have plenty of life too if you're interested drop me a message mate.

This will give you an idea Lee, the brackets fit onto the calipers and in turn the brackets bolt up to the original mounting points on the hubs, this "relocates" the calipers further back, allowing bigger discs.

These are Evo 8 calipers, they work with 350mm Evo X discs:thumbup1:
