Trying to track down the part number for the starter relay. So far I've got 2523089981 which I think is for the automatic and I believe the two are different.

Does anyone know the part number for the manual one by any chance?

I didn't think manuals had one. Only automatics.

Could be wrong, but I'm sure my research threw that tidbit up very recently.

You on about the Starter/inhibitor relay?

I spent some time looking for the starter inhibitor relay recently and it doesn't exist on a manual

As I understand your right, UK manual cars do not have them. USDM cars have them activated by the clutch. Not sure about JDM cars.

I've never known a JDM car that requires the clutch to be depressed in order to start it, so I'd say not.

I haven't seen the schematics or wiring diagrams that I know are specifically for a UK or JDM car, but surely surely the starter is still engaged by a relay of some sort? The FSM troubleshooting guide for the starting system isn't particularly helpful as it doesn't even mention the starter relay as a possible cause, even though it's clearly illustrated in the diagrams.

So just on American versions then. You'd assume so, [re the relay] the ignition system is not switching the full load of the starter, not on those pissey cables. In fact you can see the starter wired separately. So logic says it must engauge a relay. The relay is there in the diagrams as you say however those diagrams are generic auto and manual, with both the relay and inhibitor labelled A for auto. It would appear its switched via a Blue/Yellow wire on A5, switched on the ground. Starter is provided with Permanent Live. If I read that correctly. There's an indication labelled M by the starter relay showing a link, I assume bypassing the Relay.

if you look on the above diagram it has symbols on there a for a/t and m for m/t if you look at the starter relay and the inhibitor switch they both definitely say a for automatic. and the manual bypasses the relay completely so i would say no relay on a manual

Interesting. I can clearly hear a relay, does the ignition have a relay itself when the key is fully turned?

Sounds logical - most Americans have probably been driving automatic cars for years now, so it would be second nature to just jump in and turn the key.... Without checking if a manual-shifter is in neutral....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Thinking about it, I think that diagram is applicable to our cars. As mentioned, the manual transmission bypasses the starter relay and goes straight to the coil in the starter. This coil is essentially the starter relay as it connects the starter motor direct to the battery.

So no starter relay installed on UK or JDM cars.

Makes sense.

So the clicking Simon refers to is likely to be the coil being activated within the solenoid?

The problem then maybe the connections between the coil and the starter motor are at fault, possibly.
