Wanted 300zx 1990-1991, manual shift NA or TT, 2+2 is OK, Leather would be nice, Steering MUST BE FOR USA, To export must have MOT up to date, Clear Title, Vin that can run through Carfax.

I am having trouble in USA in finding/obtaining a 300ZX for daily use, would like everything to work on car, Pls no WIP cars or cars heavily modified.

Sadly, in USA there are many scams and washed titles, once I get vin, I run CarFax, and the questions start.

They drop like flies after I mention it will be a 3rd party buy and I will have prospected car inspected twice (I pay for inspections). First inspection is by good Z specialist and second inspection is by a Nissan Dealership that can has computers that can handle these cars. These inspections are like a "Pre-Purchase Inspection".

I also ask inspection(s) to give cost estimate of what needs to be fixed on car (the cars are old and therefore they all need one thing or another, some immediately and others down the road).

Literally it is as close to a "turn key purchase" or as close as one could get. Based on egress issues having aftermarket steering wheel with diss is a plus also having aftermarket stereo is a plus, however no ghetto blasters please. I realize i will have to ship and get car through customs, but that is a wash as compared to having one hauled from west coast to me.

I have NEVER have gotten to price (negotiation) with anyone yet, Like I said - "they drop like flies" once they hear inspections but I am not looking for deal/steal of the century and will certainly pay for what I get. If I get one of the club members cars I will include free lodging, food, beverages and visitation rights to your old car. I can also you pic's from time to time, matter of fact anyone who assists me in obtaining a car is welcome also. Charleston, SC is a good place to visit.

PS: I will also throw in free driving lessons so you all can learn to drive on the correct side of the road

There are next to none LHD cars in UK as we just import from Japan. Euro imports are more expensive and unneccesary for us being on the other side.

You're better off trawling eBay France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

When I looked last time....there were a lot of beautiful ones for sale in the States, for me it wouldn't be worth the hastle to export it overthere.

yes to joining or visiting clubs

yes there are a lot of pretty cars in USA,,However title washing is huge problem, we have had more than our fair share of hurricans , TRemendous flood damaged and Insurance companies have scapped these,,they go to auction and bought as salvage, then taken to other states, where title definations are different and they get a title there and then they take it back to original state and get title again,,,"read washed titles"..I Carfax every vehicile I am interested in,,,whta do you think when history comes back and car has no history for first 80,000 miles, another car was missing 17 years - no info at all..

  • Author

inconsistant Title washing laws are at state level,,Federal level is a crime and punishable, probation & fine, inprisonment.

yes,

you are correct and thank you..

It is very likely I will buy my z thru a 3rd party purchase based upon my current health (I haved used this method before).

To start a 3rd party purchase you normally get a Carfax to see history,,cost for this report is $40 apiece.

This is where and when title washing occurs..

https://www.cars.com/articles/2014/09/storm-surge-beware-of-title-washed-cars/

If carfax is good next step is Pre-purchase inspections (i use 2)

!, Qualified 300zx inspector inspects car and sends me report on car

2. If first report is good, car is scheduled into closest Nissan dealership to seller, if possible, not all dealerships have ability to use computer to hook up to such an old car, Their equipment is newer and not compatible with 300ZX..So I must search for dealer who can. This also costs me money $150 or more depends on what they see at first,,sometimes I pay for them to dig deeper..

These (2) reports are then certified

I send seller all reports, he has to provide me with a clean and clear copy of title, also current registration (This shows they have paid their yearly taxes on car) To pay tese taxes they must show proof of insurance,

By them doing all of the above, I can then legally transport car out of state and get new title issued in South Carolina (where I live).

Now we negotiate price, if agreement is reached, I setup payment method that seller wants to use:

Cash - I get a lawyer to represent me (to work for me he has to sign a performance clause)

Bank transfer

Cashiers check or wire transfer - I use lawyer again

Credit card

Lawyer gives payment and seller signs title over to me

If they are close to me, I can do it in person myself, however traveling 2,500 miles is a good stretch of legs

Car transport is (and car ) are there at this time

OK, now I have all info and so does seller to begin negotiations on car,,if we agree on price ( I use phone and Skype) :taz:

After everything is said and done, car gets loaded onto transport and comes to me.

I also use carfax for buyback guarantee, it anything is misrepresented, they will refund all expenses incurred to me. (up to this point)

I have all information on current state of car and what needs to be done to it (short and long term).

If I so choose at this point I can get extended warranty, for warranty to become active I must fix (everything listed on "pre-purchase inspections) within 30 days.

The car can then be put under warranty (if I choose) for up to 100,000 miles or 6 years, whatever comes first.

The warranty I usually buy is $100 deductible, on each visit to whoever I want to take it,,so if turbo's need to be replaced, rotors, engine even electrical sys and I brought it in to have all done at same time,,My portion of entire bill that I pay is only $100 for everything and of course I only use Dealerships / Certified repair shops the best.

This warranty is expensive (just like a new car, except better). No matter what I only pay the $100 deductable. Most of time the warranty cost excedes the:helpsmilie: cost of purchasing the car.

I only use this high end extended warranty on stuff I want to keep myself, family and for gifts. My personal plan also includes 24/7 roadside assistance within 30 min. If they do not appear within the time frame, I get next payment free (it is setup on a monthly payment plan..They did miss the time once, My current monthly payment was $4,500 - really depends on how many cars I have under this coverage (it varies), Also My plan is like the top end one, other plans I have are each different. I use to have son, daughter and wife under same type as mine. Howver after my wife left (we got divorced 2 years ago) I changed hers :glare: they have to get to her within 24 hours :balloon:

She wanted a friendly divorce, but it turned out that that was a lie, I do not like liars and my family knows it, "shortest distance between (2) points is arrived at using the truth"

If I was selling my car and you contacted me with that information, I would go quiet too, cripes that's some buying procedure right there!

In my opinion the Nissan dealership part of your buying process is unnecessary. Don't get me wrong I fully understand that you're treading carefully and want to buy the best car you can, but it seems overkill for a 27 year old used car!

A 300zx specialist inspection should be more than enough and he would likely have a conzult to diagnose any current defects; expecting the seller to take time from their day and use their gas to drive the car to a Nissan dealership of your choice is probably a waste of everyone's time. It is unlikely that the technicians in the dealerships have experience or training on the Z32 and if they have, the training/knowledge will be so shady and diluted that I don't believe it will present valuable feedback (certainly in the UK). The sort of feedback that a specialist will be all over within a very short period of time.

For info: UKDM cars were supplied without an airbag 1990-94.

I flew to LA with $11,000 strapped to my lower back in cash .

Met up with a guy in Temecula , bought his 240z on the spot , razzed around orange county for a few days buying parts then stuck it in a container and got it shipped back .

Was an easy and rather rewarding experience :-).

Just come to the UK on hols and buy one, we aren't a bad bunch and flights are only about £500 quid (depending on time of year and were you fly from)

yes,

but was his wife hot cos thats the important question, not weather his car was crap ... :tt2:

I agree with your thoughts completely,,the delaer only costs $150 AND IT WILL THEN SUPPORT AND MAKE BETTER CASE IF i WANT / OBTAIN EXTENDED WARRANTY,,also really sets the bar on pre-existing problems versus new..Biggest Insurance comapnies use here is Pre-Existing conditions,,,I try to do overkill in that area. If you want funny extended warranty story become familiar with any convertable that uses hartop to fold up..My friend has a VW eos,,kinda neat car -folding hardtop that also has built in powered sunroof,,so you can have best of all worlds.

security of hardtop, if only going short distancee just use sunroof, or if is really nice out use automatic folding hardtop and you have a convertable, You can get extended warranty on them pretty easy,,until you say that you want to include all electric wiring in warranty..The VW EOS has sensors that monitor other sensors,,lol, If gas door is not closed, car will not start nor will hardtop work, If you stand behind car or park close to the behind you 5 feet or so,,hardtop will not open, it overhangs rear end when going down or up, So if ya got a guy you don't like and his top is down and it looks like rain,, just park close behind him,,he is gunna get mighty wet if it rains. I think Mrcedes, BMW and volvo all have similar logic.

Another good one is trunk sesnor, car comes with little box that hooks to trunk floor and that is your storage space,,this box has pressure sensor in floor where clip from box nust be attached, if not attached, worn or broke,,top will not work,,thease are good ideas and does protect top mechanism from being broke or bent,,but you do need to know about them.

Gas tank filler door has (2) sensors,,if I remember right, fisrt one is OK,,it just senses if open, handy feature,,other one however is related to another sensor and will not let you open gas lid to add fuel..You see a lot of EOS around that owners have used flat blade screwdriver to pry and break latch so as to be able to fill car up..Current fix is attach wire to gas tank lid latch and run it into car somewhere..So if you have problem all you have to do is pull wire to release latch, rather than bbreaking it.

Sorry for caps

Your over thinking this. It's a 27 year old sports car that's worth, not a great deal. If it was some high end exotic or classic you may get people playing your game but these cars just aren't in that bracket. A warranty on a Z32 is either going to be so prohibitively expensive it's got to be uneconomical or not worth the paper it's written on because it's an old car that's not worth much. Just buy one you like, that hasn't been wrapped round a tree or sat in a lake and take it to a specialist to repair the crap that's wrong with it, there will be stuff wrong with it and if there isn't there will be.

Join the US forum, (http://www.300zxclub.com) get some specific advice (because we don't know your laws) and stop procrastinating. You live the best country in the world bar Japan for these cars. If we can find good ones and make them work on this mouldy rock I'm sure you will be fine.

End of.

TY for invite and castles in England are on bucket list

So perhaps,,I'll make it there.

I have bought cars before and done exactly as you did, and it worked out just fine. However I always knew a lot about the car from previous experience with them.

Sadly, I do NOT know a lot about 300ZX's, I am trying to learn ASAP, However time is not on my side.

And I wish to obtain one and have fun with my son in it, before I go. As I said before it is my dream car,,

There are 2 for sale each within 15 miles of me and I have went to them, driven them and given them the once over.

First one was good car, Carfax supported it and it was 1993 300ZX NA, fabric interior, he wanted 11,500 and I ggt him down to 11..Shifter linkage needed bushings - real lose especially 3rd gear,,I would rank it high 7 to low 8 on scale of 1 -10..Awfully nice guy,,However when I looked at it the drivers side door sill had straight line just in front of drivers seat running across the sill, and it was raised higher than rest of sill,, To me it looked like weld, like entire nose of car was replaced and on drivers side the weld was begining to bubble up. I went around to other side pasengers side and looked everywhere I could to see if I could confirm a front end clip replacement (big time),,I ccould not find anything on passenger side, but here again I am not familar with 300zx's that much, He has had car for 14 years, carfax supports his statement milegae around 120,000 if I remember right. He said car was like that when he bought it, I believed him,,however the weld in the door sill really scared me and when I talked about taking it for inspections, he kinda shied away and said wife wanted him to sell but he really didn't care and only used it on weekends for fun..Add was still there a month later and I followed up and made him an (2) offers,,contingent on getting inspections. 1.) I would pay what he wanted however still needed inspection I did have Z guy and he would come to his house and do inspection, or he could do it at his shop. Whatever seller wanted, he had capability to raise car to be able to under it,,all he needed was owners driveway,,upon completion of inspection (which I would pay for) I would give him what he wanted 11K unless there was something major discovered.

2nd option was based upon my opinion that he had some second thoughts and really did not wan to commit At this time, he needed more time..I have operation coming up and will have some mobility issues for a couple of months and really won't be driving car once operation is done till first of year. We still get inspected, upon passing inspection, I will setup escrow account for what he wants for car. He keeps car and can use it until beginning of next year. We will then inspect again to insure nothing has changed except wear and tear items. This way if he is still unsure about car. Nobody's hurt we both walk away,,litterally what I was trying to do is get first right to buy car, also he had storage for car, which at time I did not. I would save on 6 months fee of storage and he gets to use car..Unusual offer,,but he was awfully nice guy and so am I.

He declined both options,,frankly my opinion is that he does not want car inspected and there might be a lot to do with that seem on drivers sill..

He is waiting for someone who thinks they know a lot about these cars and will deal cash in hand. which I can do however I want an inspection first.
