This is embarrassing, after replacing all of my brake lines on the car, I had one line that I spent an age trying get the new flare and 10mm nut to seal properly. I must have made up to 4 lines in total before finally today the little barsteward stopped weeping. The weep was so small you would only know it was leaking if you rammed a blue cloth tight up against the pipe and the back of the nut, and when you removed it the cloth would be a slightly darker blue.

Anyway checking the nipples on the ABS unit I discovered I had a similar leak. So small that it only noticed after mashing he brake pedal 5-10 times and again hold a rage against the underside of the nipple. After tightening, pumping the pedal 4-5 times it was still leaking!

So with two hands I gave the nipple/nut a harder twist and.............

:cursing:

Is it worth even trying to remove the remanent of the nipple of just be done with it and a buy a second hand one? (Or just burn the bloody car!)

So pissed off that I wish that I had never started now, with the subframe and brakes etc

Was hoping to reinstall the subframe tomorrow and finally go for a drive, the first of this year. Guess that's going to have to wait now for a week or so now:angry::angry:

Well tried the extractor method and the tool snapped off in the recess.

I will check which version I have... Is there any way I can check without the actual unit? Is there a tell tale sign on the brake master or something which type it is? 1990 na manual

Maybe Joel, although I borrowed a set from my neighbour (ex BA mechanic) and most of his tools are usually high end brands.

Tried drilling out the offending extractor, it is hard enough to snap my drill bits.

Hi Ali, thanks for the thought, but I have just bought one from Banzi Breakers.

Just be gentle with your nipples this time Howard!

Lol, will be buying some new nipples before I fit the unit Andrew. The subframe is all under the car and lined up, just need an extra pair of hands (my son) to finish the install. So hopefully the subframe will be done this week, with the ABS unit soon after.

Good to hear Howard. If the existing nipples on the replacement ABS unit are in good condition I would be inclined

to leave them in service. I found two of the new nipples on my AP brakes had a tendancy to very weep slightly until

I had bedded them in by repeatedly opening and closing them.

I too have found this when I replaced the nipples on my Brembos.

They're hard enough to blunt a drill bit easy enough, but most extractors on the market are rarely up to the job, including the BA issue tools. For future reference, see the Snap-on man for screw extractors as they're far superior.

They look like this and are around a fiver each:

Nevertheless, hope you get it fixed up ok. I'm sure Paul (NemesisZX) had one of the for sale recently.

Cheers for the info on the Snap extractors, I will certainly getting myself some of those for the increasing array of tools.

I like the way the are short, rather than longer items I have seen for sale, makes sense.

:cool3:

Hope I can still borrow my neighbours Torque wrench for tightening up the driveshaft nuts after this :innocent:

Assume the extractor has snapped off flush and you can't get anything on it?

Yes nothing to get hold I m afraid

Well the saga continues...... having bought 3 different types of nipples (as in the seat/angle of the nipple) none of them effect a seal. In fact all of them are worse than the OEM ones.

I have some OEM ones being sent by Jimmer soon, (cheers Jim) and I have ordered another pair this time in steel rather than s/steel. I will be attempting to "gently grind" the land area, with the nipple as others on here have suggested.

Hey Matey,

Gutted to hear you snapped your nipple, easily done mind you, especially when the anger kicks in :)

so basically when we use stud extractors at work you will need to drill a hole to suit the stud extractor,

be very careful when drilling yours as the bottom of the hole is machined as a seat for your brake pipe,

you kneed to know exactly how far your safe drilling down to and clear the bottom of the hole, as said above be sure to use quality tools

as a broken stud extractor is no fun at all believe me, patience is the key here,

if your not having fun at it you may need to remove the whole abs pump onto the bench a lot of work I know but at least you get more room to work

best of luck hope you get it out

You're a bit late into this one as the stud extractor broke off the hole a long time ago!

The fun bit is getting all the air out of the bloody thing.

I found I had to seat the nipple so to speak, doing it up, loosen, repeat until the nipple marked and a seal was then achieved. I had to tighten it up to a point I didn't exactly have faith in either the first couple of goes. You may remember that I successfully buggered up my front caliper drilling out a snapped nipple and Gaz had to come to the rescue, helicoiling and cutting a new nipple seat for me.

I hate brakes.
