needs a few bits but no big rush for them, main one is an engine rebuild as its very smokey, while the engine is out ill be welding in a front corner as mines bent

Just to clarify the ecu is 8 bit with OBC 1 diagnostic and so does not have the ability to enforce limp home mode like modern cars can, air leaks and or afm problems can limit rev limit though.

just assumed it was limp mode as last time it ran was with no intercooler and wouldnt go past 3k, now with the bodged pipes it does so maf is getting air though it now revs over 3k

There is a default setting for a disconnected or failed maf which limits revs, with no inter cooler`s fitted the maf was not getting any air so was treated as a failed maf. Interestingly your temporary pipework was an over kill all you needed was to link the two sided pipes in an original configuration at each corner like in picture below.

Never even had that thought when doing that with the pipes ill look into changing it when i get a chance as itd be easier to move the car around like that

If your interested I've got a pair of stock intercoolers you can have for £20 plus postage, do away with all that.

Did it have a central intercooler once ? maybe why you thought of doing the pipework like that, still you got it working so cannot knock your inventiveness.

Couldnt justify spending £20 on intercoolers just to be able to move the car around the workshop when ill be refitting a front mount for when it goes on the road thanks for the offer though

It did have a centre mounted intercooler before it was crashed in 2013 this is what it looked like before the damage

Fair enough, if that's all you wanted though you could of just unplugged the MAF and driven it forward and back without that bodge pipe.

Just an FYI unless your sold on the looks of the front mount id retain the SMIC location. The front mount most commonly used (which isn't Z32 specific) removed the cross over design of the system, increases intercooler pipe length, whilst also increasing under bonnet tempretures. All of which are undesirable. Unless you spend big bucks on a TDM works front cooler which allows shortening of the lines and an efficient core a front mount is often a poorer choice than SMIC on these cars.

Whats the difference in pipework between the 2 fmic?

Stock SMIC configuration (with a bigger cooler);

Universal FMIC as you had;

HKS style;

TDM works;

It might seem like not much but when you consider how much of an improvement you make increasing your piping diameter, adding more restrictions and length is a bad choice...up to you what you want to do at the end of day.

I found an old for sale ad for the car and in the listing it said hks intercooler but the pics show a universal one im now thinking what else on the mods list isnt there

  • Author

Ill dig an injector out in the week and put a pic up, i know the exhaust or at least the back boxes are different but not sure on others

See what colour the plastic top is on the injector, brown, red, blue, purple etc. that can be an indicator of what injector it is.

Jeff

Looking at the pictures, your indeed correct. That is not a HKS intercooler, it's a universal front mount. Likely Chinese part like this;

http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/TWIN-TURBO-ALUMINIUM-FMIC-FRONT-MOUNT-INTERCOOLER-FOR-NISSAN-300ZX-SKYLINE-GTR-/150808701775?hash=item231ce62b4f%3Ag%3AD6QAAOSw2xRYkzfa&_trkparms=pageci%253A91a88a3b-235a-11e7-a4e7-74dbd180884e%257Cparentrq%253A7b81cb9b15b0a60cd80f55d1fff14fd0%257Ciid%253A6

I'm not saying that's a problem but it's certainly not the high end part you were told.

Did we not establish a while back that this isn't a genuine veilside car but simply a veilside kitted car? I think there's some very liberal truth...

  • Author

Ill have a look and see what colour the injectors are in a bit

Tbh im fairly sure the cars not a veilside car just a replica as the engine bay is still silver so is inside the bootlid, veilside would of painted there, im just assuming on some parts going on an old advert i found after i bought it as the place i got it from didnt know much about it other than its a 300zx which is why i got it for £300

Do you want to make a veilside replica or just create a nice 300zx? Side mounts 90% of the time are the best choice.

  • Author

Just a nice 300zx nothing in your face or fancy just something as a weekend toy

  • Author

Im wondering if theres anything thats listed in the advert is actually fitted to the car, looking very likely that the cars standard apart from the intercooler, is there any way to see if the cars remapped or chipped?
