Guys, I've been away form the forum for a while but getting the zed back on the road this year and planning on getting my ECU mapped in the next few months. I'm trying to get hold of Noel but not having any luck. Do you know if he is still trading? Phones just ring out/answerphone and I've had no reply to messages sent...

Thanks,

Chris.

In terms of actual 'specialists', Jimmer (PowerZed) and Lee Dent (LA) are the only 'specialists'. Both have had great reputations right from the start.

I was PowerZed's first ever customer and have been using Jim ever since. His attention to detail, knowledge and skill are first rate and he's been responsible for some of the most powerful Z32s in the country, prior to PZ, Jim had all sorts of technical qualifications and spent many years rebuilding complex truck gearboxes, so has a wealth of engineering expertise.

And he's a bloody nice bloke to boot, But he does sound like roight country bumpkin.

So did planetary scientist, the late great Professor Colin Pillinger! :)

And musical giants 'The wurzels'

Sadly, it's the lack of knowledgeable and reasonably priced garages/ mechanics that means many Zeds don't get the attention they deserve, there not true classic status yet and the prices for work some "specialists" ask, doesn't often justify a vehicles value and unless you have enthusiastically deep pockets.

My first discussions with a "specialist" about repairing my engine resulted in a rough quote, which was the same cost I had paid for the whole car only a few months earlier, would have loved to get it back on the road but my pockets weren't going to stretch to several thousand pounds!

Unfortunately Jeff was the only engineer able to provide a high standard of service whilst trying to deliver value for the sake of the marque and in so doing was always in demand, of course helped by his location.

It's just a shame the skill set for these cars isn't more widespread.

Good to hear pro tuner still has a good rep, my car is heading there in July.

Hi Dougal200,

If you do manage to get over to Pro Tuner in July I'd be interested in meeting up, if that's okay with you.

I work just around the corner from them and live just 2.5 miles away.

Would love the opportunity to discuss your restoration.

Will you be at Coventry?

All is not lost then at least....life in the old Zeds yet.

Not so good in Scotland, we have nothing up here....had a whole host of bad experiences......hopefully my car keeps working although I do need to get my timing fixed as the lads that set it up having it idling at 20 BTDC instead of 15.

It's not an automatic converted to manual by any chance?

Sure thing mate,

I'm booked in for the 20th July. I'll be driving up from Evesham so I expect I'll hang out there all day. Always happy to have someone to talk 300s with.

Brilliant, I think I will book half a day in the afternoon and pop round. (hopefully in the Zed.)

Looking forward to meeting up mate.

It is actually yeah mate?

The modification to get it to work with the ECU tricks the car into thinking it's in gear. The 15btdc is activated on manuals by a neutral position switch, without it you get 20btdc at idle.

It was converted before I got the car, so no idea what method they used to do what needed to be done.

Just need to deal with it then as there's nobody I trust near me to fix anything on the Zed.

I drove up all the way from Belgium to Jimmer for a engine overhaul and haven't regreted it one single second.!!!! If I ever have a major job to be done again, I'll drive up to Bristol right away.

Jimmer 's a topguy!!!

How would I check this mate....and any other info would be handy if you have any.

Thanks :)

Loads of info available if you search. In short you need Conzult or similar which will tell you what the ECU thinks the timing should be. The neural switch grounds (or breaks, I can't remember) pin 44 from the ECU. This signal causes the timing to retard from 20 to 15btdc. First place to check is the ECU, if a splice has been performed on pin 44. Then continuity test the switch itself, they fail it seems.

If at warm idle setting the timing to 15btdc causes the CAS to be not particularly central, particularly if it's way off it's likely the Neutral switch isn't wired up or is faulty. The other option of corse is that the psychical timing is wrong, tooth out etc.

You've got to set the base idle and throttle position correctly too. This is why someone familiar with Z32s makes so much difference.

The base idle and tps are fine, sorted them myself with conzult.

ECU at idle is timing for 20 from conzult, using a timing light the block is timing at 15.

The idle valve i've read should be set at around 15-16, mines is around 22-23 though.....if i use conzult to temporarily adjust my timing -5, i can get the idle valve into the correct range.

Another weird thing that this zed and other zeds i've had do is idle high once warmed up at around 1500rpm, but once i come to a stop and sit idling for a few seconds, the idle then comes down to the normal level.

If I keep driving the car it keeps idling high, it only comes down when the car comes to a dead stop....strange!

Need to have a look at the ecu pin things when I have time.

Been busy detailing cars the last 6 weeks.

You need to match the timing as measured by the timing light to what it states on Conzult. Conzult isn't displaying the actual timing but what it's supposed to be. If Conzult says 20btdc at idle then that supports the thoery that the neutral switch isn't working. It's not the end of the world tbh, just set it correctly, at present yours 5 degree retarded throughout the whole band.

Back on topic, out of curiosity, is Noel still trading as Turbonoz and working on Z32s (outside of the club) or has that bubble completely burst?

He is working on zeds outside the club. I seen a few people received tunes from him recently including James's 632whp

I think his name is jay jay on the forum has the green zed

He lives near me, doesn't he have a cherry red zed?
