Petition to increase motorway speed limit from 70mph to 90mph

Do you think the speed limit on

the UK's motorways should be

increased from 70mph to

90mph?

If so, there is a government

petition that you can sign.

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/171341

If it reaches 100,000 signatures

then it should get debated in

Parliament.

Yes and no. Sure the technology has increased so cars can perform better at higher speeds and importantly braking. However people haven't changed and an accident at 70 at the moment, would be more severe at 90mph. Up for debate whether there will be more frequent accidents though.

On the other hand, journey times cross country will be quicker, and we won't get so many damn speeding tickets for the zeds

Most accidents happen at lower speeds, the problem is you can do 60 or even 70 on a lot of A roads they are the deadly ones.

I am all for increasing the speed limit - in the same way that I also agree to the lower variable limits we have on the M25 etc.

However, we also have to improve driving standards as well; although hopefully a higher limit would be a deterrent for the current lane 2 and 3 hogs who sit there, resolute, at 70 "because that is the speed limit." Those folks would hopefully think twice about drifting into the next lane, if that car whizzing up behind at 90 was doing it legally!

There would not be a massive increase in speeds either; as most normal people drive at a speed they feel comfortable at. Many already travel at 80-90mph; and would most likely not increase that to 100-110 mph, in the event the limit was raised to 90.

Will I sign the petition though? Don't know.....

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Won't happen. It's nothing to do with safety, the roads with the highest limits are the safest and the lowest statistically the most dangerous. These days they are pushing more and more on the emissions thing as well with 50mph clean air zones, ironic really as the 20mph zones blantely cause more pollution.

The green cotton wool brigade have a lot of power these days.

I would so love too, but not in this country.....

I have worked in Germany for example, and their motorway etiquette is so amazing ! Its born and bred into them.

Over here ?? No chance ! Stick to 70. Too many racing drivers amongst us.

It would take years to work properly, if at all ??

Alan...

I was whizzing along at 84 today and cars in front were going away from me, didn't feel like i was doing that speed though in my daily.

I wouldn't go past a traffic cop at 84, bit cocky is that but i have done so quite regularly at high 70's, they aren't interested and never give chase, this i assume is because i have done it safely and without aggression, think it's an unwritten rule that the speed limit on a motorway is not 70, certainly not enforced as such unless you drive like a right cock.

Unless the guidelines have changed most police forces follow the policy on speeding over the motorway limit (70mph) as under 79mph

to be disregarded and 79mph to 86mph to be considered for a National Speed Awareness Course. Over that you can expect a summons.

Of course, you can be prosecuted at any speed for other driving offences such as careless or dangerous driving.

Make the outside lane 90mph. If your in that lane, you have to be over taking, if not, tuck back in. Driving in Germany is a joy, we need to be like them. We need a complete re-structure of our driving lessons and tests. In Finland for example it takes 4 years to get a full license. You have to drive and gain experience in all kinds of situations and weather before be allowed on the road. My wife passed her test last July and she asked why I indicate right when im approaching a line of parked cars. I explained to warn people im crossing the white line and warning any motorbikes behind me that I'm shifting position. She said she was told that she didnt have to do that. I talked to her instructor and the outcome was that the examiners concentrate more on road position than indication, so for example, if you are in the right hand lane, then inside of a roundabout and you are turning right, you can forget your indicator because you are in the correct lane and other traffic know where you are going. My argument was, what if its a dual carriage roundabout, are they going straight or turning right? What if the car is cutting the roundabout as many people do these days? What if hes over taking on the roundabout? Yes there are many idiots on the road (especially in Eastbourne), but they seem to be taught to be idiots before they even get their license. I was always taught Mirror, Signal, Maneuver, even when I did my bus test in 2015 and thats way Ill drive because if I signalling right and someone crashes into to me, they cant argue that I wasnt advertising my intentions!

Agree our driving test is crap. How often do we hear "new driver are most likely to have accidents" you don't even drive on a motorway or bay park. We have loads of them round here (it's an estate on the edge of town, so quiet)crawling along working out how to use a clutch, personally I think the testing should be staged. Theory, then provisional in a safe non public place, then open roads. A bit like how you learn to scuba dive. When the people that have just passed aren't up to standard it points very clearly at the quality control, i.e. The test.

The infrastructure in this country is shite, it cannot support the cars we have full stop. Last week my average speed on the way to work, a 95 mile trip each way, was less than 30mph. It's mostly, maybe 80/90% dual carriageway and national speed limit. Trains, forget them, too expensive and round here cack handed and require a different transport method to get near your destination. Buses, unless you live in Town or one it's main parts it's a nightmare. In fact we only just got a bus route back after it was cancelled. Most of the time they are just empty, or full of fossils that get free passes, pumping out shit for no good reason. Only busy in the summer with the forgin students.

Let's not even start on our other over stretched public services.

Hollands public transport is brilliant, cheap, reliable and convenient. I like the buisness they do on the motorway where the limit drops due to weather conditions.

i average around 130mph on the motorway in the Lexus such a good driving culture that people generally move out of your way when youre doing those kind of speeds plus its cuts down on driving time drastically. You do always get the Porches doing over 150 though so i dont sit in the outside lane.

Oh this is in Germany as well  we do all right at high speeds here.

you don't even drive on a motorway or bay park.

Small correction bay parking is compulsory.

That driving instructor is a pillock [emoji38]

You'd fail the test for doing that if there was someone next to you. But definitely it would be a fault recorded

Since when Ali? They used to make you do a reverse round the corner, three point turn, hill start and reverse park. No bay park though. Still not fit for purpose.

As part of the practical test it requires you to do at least 1 of the following reverse manouvers:

3 point turn

corner reverse

parallel park

bay park

While I agree with the learners never going on the motorway giving them no experience, it still would be chaos with some learner drivers fumbling around on the motorway and perhaps unsafe?

Only if they aren't ready to be there. Just because the test is passed the newly passed learner will still be "fumbling about", just this time without supervision.

.....And yes......

It'll never happen unfortunately.

They pulled out of the 80mph increase due to the increase in emissions. Add the fact that the government now get fined for not hitting the set air pollution reduction levels, it would cost them money to increase the limit.
