Having been to Portugal I personally wouldn't trade it for the UK...weather wise maybe but that's about it.

No? its bigger than you think maybe just the part you went to did not fit?

There is a huge difference to going somewhere on holiday and living there, how many times have we been away and thought how nice it would be to live the life or i could see myself being here ? Holiday mentality is misleading lol.

I have looked at villas in several parts of Spain for the past year, away from the holiday resorts, as they are not a true indication of real life out there, but not too far away that you can indulge if required.

The atmosphere, weather, cost of living, scenery etc are all factors to wanting to make the move, fear of the unknown, language, rules, integrating are factors to overcome. Once you have a feel for a place, then you can start to leave the "what you are used too" mindset to one side and for some, can enjoy both. Holiday home with the possibility of emigrating later is a good indication if its viable for you.

For me its still a long way off, but doesnt stop me dreaming

Marsha & I went to Ferragudo in Nov 2016 & at 21C very pleasant climate.

We have visited Portugal four times in the past two years.

At the same period we have visited Tenerife & Ibiza.

My opinion is I do prefer Portugal.

The people in Portugal I find friendlier & the food quality plus service better.

You so right, falling in love with were you holiday is easily done, living there can and is very, very different, almost made that very mistake first hand after many years of holidaying in the South of France we decided it was the place for us and set about selling up and moving out there, got the kids in school and sorted temporary place to live etc. right at the last moment and I mean THE DAY, we realised that at that time, three kids under 10 years old , family and overly high expectations it would have been a disaster, and we could not do it, so lucky the house had not sold ..... that was 25 years ago !

The move to Portugal has been part of a ten year plan, by purchasing extra house in the UK and building a base of friends and business associates in Portugal etc. we basically have moved not only to were we holidayed for the past 15 years but to where we know, where we are known and people we know, arriving here when ever we venture back to the UK is just like getting home to us, it does help the kids are grown up and married with their own lives now of course but living in another country is definitely not for everyone, for us we have best of both with still another house in the UK and a home here, not happy about the recent drop in the exchange rate but hey ho..

Mate 2 weeks out of 52 of your life does me..Ive lived the dream in sunny California for 4 years and at the end it was making me old:wheelchair: and i was only 42. Come back to blighty and started fighting again and felt 20 years younger overnight..sun,booze and sunsets every night is great for some so enjoy:pint: but not my cuppa.

Totally agree that "sun, booze and sunsets every night is great for some " but as a lifetime been tea total that at least removes that issue, many, many expats here turn into regular morning wine drinkers, in the main because of the low, low cost, 1€ a litre for a decent red !! where Fanta orange is 2.50€ a can in a restaurant/

The motorsport scene here is a fairly new emerging sport, as is classic and sports car ownership in general, involve myself with that every month as well as enjoying the more relaxed life. Can fully understand your return to the UK invigorated you, but guessing that was a while back, the UK is not the place it was in a 100 ways, but of course been so close in comparison to the US we can can be back on a cheap 35€ flight in 2 hours 20 mins, does make it so much easy to enjoy both sides of the coin I guess.

Saying that, you cannot say a walk along our local marina on a warm evening is boring and makes you feel old surely??
