what are the best mods to make a z accelerate hard off the line, I had a good day at the dragstrip today, terminal speed of 108 was okay but my launch times were awful, reaction times are bad , but for me that is to be expected, is there anything i can do to make it develop power a lot earlier ?

Featured Replies

na diff? improves acceleration vs top speed apparently, what tyres you using? I guess anything that helps breathing will spool the turbos faster,

which drag strip did you go to? hopefully ill get mine to few next year

but my launch times were awful,

Answered part of your own question there bud, more grip, more practice.

Terminal speed is an indicator of engine power.

What was your best ET and 60ft time???

okay , ADL i went to shakespeare raceway.

Ive only ever driven the drag strip 3 times so pls dont take the piss. but do give constructive guidance !

the slip times are

reaction =.75323

60 ' = 2.613

330' = 6.599

660' = 9.561

mph 1 = 85.13

990' - 11.979

1320' = 14.13

mph 2 = 108.68

just realised Shakespeare raceway is 5 mins further for me then santa pod, post up when your going next year if my zeds ready ill come along...

cant comment on the times as I cant find the slips for my silver zed and pete gets cross as I don't have the 60ft times...

but did just find a slip for my old LWB NA,

.7467 reaction

2.601 60ft

10.164 1/8 @ 71.93mph

15.562 1/4 @ 90.70mph

yes I know very slow... but point is 60ft its faster, as the slips look like some of my first runs, id put down to the NA's shorter final drive.

(before anyone takes the piss, just seen the date on it was my first ever drag day, and it was an NA with a huge spoiler slowing it down lol)

i have an na rear diff

Did you wheelspin on the start then? I know the turbos wouldn't have really spun up until the end of the 60ft but still you got beaten by an na

Are you running bog standard street tires?

and pete gets cross as I don't have the 60ft times...

LOL!!!

Being Serious the 60ft time is the key indicator for all cars on the 1/4 mile.

2.6 sixty foot times are very slow. I know you are both novices so there is no taking the piss etc

The advice is as follows.....

Buy better tyres.

Practice... practice... practice.

Here is a target to aim for. My best ever 60ft time is a 2.06sec. Thats with an NA car. A well driven and set up TT will beat the 2sec barrier.

When you can go sub 2 sec on a 60ft time you will see your ET fall by the same amount

So drop from 2.6 to 2.0 on 60ft

You ET will drop from 14.13 to 15.5ish.

Remember the golden rule tho ... time lost at the 60ft mark can NEVER be made up.

I have Launch control which i programmed at 3.5 K and run continental sport contact tires, my turbos had spooled a bit due to the launch control , however after doing some reading I realise now that one of the big errors I made was to simply dump the clutch and mash the throttle, spin the wheels and red line it in first and second, all the advice I have now read says , launch control on, clutch just biting, wait for green light and press the throttle gently. Im sure my car should be sub 13 seconds, its heavily modified, and makes 490 Torque, has auto blowers for fairly quick spooling and twin intakes with Sellin, so with all that said the error lies with the muppet behind the wheel !

in fact , I would like to ask Slick Pete to drive my car up the strip and see what it will do at the hands of a decent driver. Pete are ye up for it. I do like shakespeare race way, to me its a bit more "real" and there are zero massive hour long queues, in fact last week toward 15:00 the queues were made up of about 4 cars.

I don't use launch control but many do and it works for a lot of people. Dumping the clutch is not the best method with turbos. Obviously you need to get the turbos spooling and once launched use the clutch to maintain the revs and boost. With that torque a 1.7 60 foot should be easily achievable but it takes practice to get the balance right. A set of drag radials will also help :)

that sounds better then pod, its a long way for me, so always annoyied me that i went all that way for 3-4 runs, why i've been to north weald more,

think we should arrange a date and get a few of us up there, would be a laugh, particuarly if maybe pete and bob wanted to join us for some tuition?

i have to say out of alll the car i have ever had the z is very hard to launch. the lotus elise i had would launch easy with no spin the 3.2 boxster i had had loads of grip and would launch great the 2.8 z3 i had had would squat down and launch nice the 944 2.5 i had would get of the line pretty good to. the last time i drove my z i had stock damper and wheels and a auto box would spin up so easy well to easy the car now has a manual with new damper and larger rear wheel wheels with 285 tyres so i hope it does launch i little better i will be fitting the traction control soon to. my mate had a supra and it launches well to would be the z is not so good in launch departmant but is good on the fly but i really do want the to launch with out fitting drag tyres as the car is for the street

That is very nice of you to offer.

However it wont work well for a variety of reasons.

You need "seat time" in a car to get the feel of it. On the road first before using it in anger.

Also....I drive my car like I stole it. Its a disposable toy to me.If it blows up or I crash it then its no big deal. I couldnt drive anyone elses car like that!!

Me personally ..I have no experience of driving a turbo 300ZX on the road let alone on the strip/track.

I have had offers before to drive but always turned them down.

Bob would be a better person to drive your car as he has lots of turbo 300 experience.

However if you have ever seen Bob on the strip/track then you probably wont want yours driven like that!.:scared:

No reason why we cant get together next year tho. I havnt done any 1/4miles this year so Iwill be needing some practice.

I meant to say before... Ignore reaction times at present. They dont count towards your ET in RWYB mode.

They only come in to play in "heads up" racing.

And finally ... here is some theory/advice. re launching and getting good 60ft times.

Build/kit out your car so it can launch at peak torque(with no or limited wheelspin) and shift at peak power.

You do need a dyno run to get those points accurately tho.

A shift light of the progressive type with sequential lights will help with peak power shifting. Single light like I have works OK too.

Come spring I'd be up for a few runs at Shakespeare. Maybe we could get a few of us together. Experienced help would help us novices.

Suspension setup will have a big impact on traction off the line aswell. Weight transfer is key. A slammed rear end with high Spring preload and stiff dampeners will shock load the tyres and lose traction. Better control the weight transfer, the more chance you will give your tyres to maintain grip.

Changes to your suspension settings will give you more of that "squat" feel you had in some of your other cars

Im going to this if anybody is up for it ..

Mid-Autumn Madness Public Track Weekend & Super Gamblers: 08/10/2016 - 09/10/2016 Shakespeare Raceway, Warwickshire.

Note, If you intend to use the Strip you will need to take a helmet, ( or hire one at the track) and you must take your driving Licence, and your vehicle will be subject to scrutineering ( 5 min job at the track) before they will allow you to register for the RWYB.

And facilities are a little more rudimentary when compared to Santa Pod, there not bad, just a little old.
