HID QUESTIONS, $$$, durability, watt, location, who???

Who has HIDS, wattage, kit used and price, how long has it been in your car?

What is a good HID 5000w kit? Where did you guys install the ballast since the engine gets hot? Any pics? I know it's an old topic but I'm curious.

Some are saying to use LED kits but is it a difference and is it worth it?

Regards

Ikon

I'm not too sure on bulb-type on USDM Z32s, I know they're different from JDM which are also different from Euro market cars.

surprised his Funkiness has not mentioned H3c HID bulbs which you should try and locate.

Why would he want H3C bulbs? :p

Sorry Simon my bad, i did read what you put and forgot he'd have USDM lights, think they're 9006 type for the lows, i've had some sent to me once and what strange contraptions their headlights are !!

Indeed. Have you seen the strange things that sit on the nipples for headlamp aim adjustment? Very odd.

A 55w bulb will burn brighter than a 35w bulb, but it won't last as long. 5000k and 6000k are generally what people seem to go for. It all depends what you want. I'm not too sure on bulb-type on USDM Z32s, I know they're different from JDM which are also different from Euro market cars.

I did have 6000k on my Z, but took them off because I felt they were too blue. I wanted a better light output and also look a little more OEM. It wasn't easy finding the right fitment in 4300k, but they are about.

I'll go with the 55w 5000k $30 kit! Also where did you install your ballast?

I'm from the US what's a wing in the UK? Alic installed his ballast there!

Thanks

You repeated your post?

Yes I installed my ballast inside the fender. There is already a hole next to the headlight so just feed the plug through, and cable tie the ballast in tight.

It was probably easier than getting the headlights out as the wind is only 7 easy access bolts.

But put it where you see fit.

I used 6000k because I like the cool blue look as it makes it look more modern and it was brighter than the projectors already in it. Pick your preference.

That's right we have the 9006 Bulbs. I'm surprised the lights are different by country

I was talking to Si on his location... But it appears it's a bitch to get the lights out and a bit easier to put in fender well. Decisions decisions.... I'm going to go with the nose panel if the cable is long enough!

I mounted each ballast in the space left under L&R headlight buckets after the OEM air filter ducts were removed.

Out of the way of engine heat and dry. The arrow points to the area (photo is not mine).

Personally I would avoid chinese made ballasts. The experience Jim Selin found in tracking down the problem with early

Selin dual Maf translators and HIDs would put me off using them whether or not you had one of his translators.

"All of the Chinese sourced ballasts I was able to test sent voltage spikes into the cars electrical system as high as 300 volts (!!!) This is

also repeatedly hitting every other computer in your system." - Jim Selin

Project 1547 - Out of the Blue

She's so fine, there's no tellin' where the money went - Simply irresistible.

I'm not quite sure how these companies are measuring light colour to reach these K numbers. They always appear lower than reality. 5-6500K is daylight white, yes white. The 6500k shown often is way more blue, more like 8k. Even 10k should be bright but not blue blue. Proper like navy blue is 20k.

It's worth pointing out that brightness itself isn't everything and colour has a bearing on the penetration of light, particularly in fog or rain. As an extreme example look at how colour is lost in seawater.

image_zpsx03b8cac.jpeg

You will notice how much further blue light travels. Anyone who's seen emergency services in the fog will know this. That blue just travels and travels. There is another factor here though about colour tempreture and power efficiency, you need more power generally to create high K colour to the same brightness. In short a good quality white to slightly blue light will provide good penetration and brightness per watt.

Sorry information overload but might be interesting to some I spose.

Also what about the lights glare/blinding other drivers...? I've read that HIDS in our projector style light housing is blinding

  • 2 weeks later...
Is this a reputable company and is this a good price for 99 JDM headlights?

That equates for us guys as 1200 sterling, it's a price i always thought they went for, nothing wrong with fitting aftermarket hid's in 89 spec headlights.

I have HIDs 6000 kit past 2 years.

Put the ballasts down left & right side of head lights!

Still working ok!

I guess I'll install the HIDs this weekend here's the ones I finally purchased. http://m.ebay.com/itm/OPT7-55w-HID-Conversion-Kit-9006-All-Color-Xenon-Headlight-Light-Bulbs-/121820455558?var=&hash=item1c5d10a286%3Am%3AmgOO2SkaJpP9J3dQMalAMPA&_trkparms=pageci%253A711a038d-9b39-11e6-b27f-74dbd1800be1%257Cparentrq%253Aff5e8e4d1570a624b8eca96affffaaf2%257Ciid%253A15

I've been busy with work projects that keep me in the road. That's why I hadn't installed it. I also picked up performance drilled and slotted rotors ( I'll post in another thread). Thanks for the input & I learned a tons from you guys and the other ZX forums.

Pure white 5k :thumbup1::thumbup1: or hot pink :winkiss::winkiss:.

Pure white....

I may order the driving/fog lights next not sure...

I had aftermarket HID's until recently. The kit I bought was from ebay and was on the Z for 6 years.

It was the Sportiva Midas 55w 4300k kit http://www.ebay.com/itm/HID-Digital-Slim-55W-Midas-Bi-Xenon-Single-Beam-Or-Hi-Lo-Conversion-Kit-W-Relay-/311427833727?&_trksid=p2056016.m2516.l5255

Had no problems at all and was a very white.

Do not, use HID's on your fog lights. They are too bright for the small housing, very high amounts of heat and you will have to cut the back of the fog light in order to run the wire for the bulb. You will be better off upgrading the bulb to a 55w (factory is 35w) using the Z1 adaptor https://www.z1motorsports.com/z1-products/z1-motorsports/z1-fog-light-conversion-plug-35-watt-55-wattpair-p-4550.html

Hope this helps.
