I am contemplating getting my Air Conditioning re gassed, my worry is that it has not been gassed up for over 5 years.

I have recently changed most of the O rings in the system, and having looked at the system in general, all appears to be in good shape.

One of my main concerns is the oil, will there still be oil in the system? Or will I have to ask for oil to be added at the time of the re gas?

The last thing I want to do is have it re gassed, only to find that the system will fail due to lack of lubricant.

All advice welcome...

Thanks in advance...

Any decent ac guy will know to add an amount of oil, what year is your zed ? makes a difference on if it is an original R12 system as it will need post adapters.

Hi Jeff, my Zed is a 1992 UK TT.

About 5/6 years ago I did have it re gassed, at the time it was mentioned that the original gas type was now illegal and that he would need some sort of adapter so as to use the correct refrigerant.

Not sure if that was a change of fitments to mine, or an adaptor so as to enable him to connect to my original fitting.

What sort of visual connectors should I be looking for?

Would it be of help if I were to post pictures so as to determine the connections that are present?

Ok you will need to only change the high and low pressure ports to accept the new recharge hose fittings, these simply tighten over your present schrader type valves to R134a types. This is a simply 5 minute job and available on E-bay such as here 2 required >

From there a pressure test can be done which will provide you and the ac guy with an indication of if the system is leak free, if ok then the system is vacuumed of all old gas, air and moisture.

Then this is when oil is introduced along with the new gas, all car ac systems have the amount of gas weight in liquid form to fill the system and is usually on a label on the slam panel, however the conversion to new gas means you only need to refill to around 80% of that figure as there is a different expansion rate in the two different gases.

When gassed up and tested, it is imperative you check the cooling fan for the condenser cuts in when the car is left ticking overe for 20 minutes with the ac on, if not this will cause the over pressure valve to let go and the gas to escape, there is a simple work around for this though so see how you go and can detail that if required.

Picture below show the old and new type port connectors, as your close to Tamworth the guy I used to use would supply and fit the port connectors as well as then testing and refilling, if you have port connectors and fitted yourself our alternative guy in Coleshill ( closer to you ) can do it, both have good tech knowledge of the 300zx ac system as we have done scores with them.

Good look and hope that helps, pm me if you want any more help, e-mail jeff@zedworld.co.uk or ask here what ever suits you.

Thanks Jeff,

Very much appreciated, do the pictures below look as though they have already been converted to you?

They look very similar to what you describe/pictured.

Also, any recommendations as to where to take her for re gas would be very much appreciated...

Do the Blue and Red caps just pull off? or are they threaded?

Any cars i get re gassed i add mineral pag oil directly into the pump, check your condensor is clean also,if its clogged gas pressures will go sky high

Cheers Jimmer, can I check the condenser in situ for being clogged as I have now rebuilt the system?

Thanks Jeff,

Thanks for the contact details Jeff, I'll give them a bell.

Could only get one decent picture with my feeble camera of the connector I'm afraid, looks similar to a tyre valve inside.

Also, thought a picture of the inside of the caps might help.

Yes its the radiator in front of the radiator, its for cooling the gas, check between the fins for bugs ect and other debris. If air doesnt flow through it the cooling action is lost.

Cheers Jimmer. :thumbup1:

Just by luck, I did brush the rad through so as to remove the leaves and bugs etc' so hopefully should be okay.

My son is a mechanic (Handy) and at his place they connect the regas machine to the car and it then does the whole job fully automatic.

1st it extracts all the old gas and oil, pressure tests the system and only if the pressure test is good will it then fill the system with gas.

I had them regas my Mondeo. Shame they don't have the adaptors for doing my 300 as I need that doing too.

I did go to a local place that did not have the machine that does it automatically so it may be worth asking what system the use.
