What is the capacity for automatic transmissions when fully drained? I heard it is around 5l but should I get and extra 1l on top of would 5l suffice.

Also so people aren't worrying I'm not buying the right thing, it's:

Westway Automatic Transmission Fluid Dexron 3 5l
correct?

Cheers,

Ali

I believe that is the correct fluid Ali.. Not sure of the amount but if you pour in around 3 litres and then check with the dip stick, you should get a good idea on how much you'll need..

Don't forget that the oil ways inside the box will need to fill aswell so don't accept the first reading off the stick.. Make sure once you have a reasonable amount in there, run the engine to allow the fluid to remove any trapped air in the system and then allow it to settle and check again..

If you treat it like filling your radiator, you can't really go wrong.. Apart from don't try filling it with the engine running or you'll end up with a face full of atf lol..

So is that new gearbox in then?

On Saturday, I'm just ordering the fluid now to go in.

Is this another Auto box or have you gone manual this time?

Ignore that... it's obviously an auto if you're putting ATF in it...

Sorry, my bad!

✔️ SWB                   ✔️ Twin Turbo
✔️ Manual               ✔️ Slick-top
✔️ Seat belts mounted in the correct places...

Auto, just want a cheap swap to keep it on the road.

Hopefully you'll have better luck with this one than you've had previously.

Fingers crossed.

When you say fully drained Alic, do you mean just what has been drained from the ATF sump pan or a complete drain as in rebuilt transmission and new torque converter?

The amount will differ by quite a lot depending on what you mean.

The sump pan on the transmission doesn't hold a huge amount of oil, firstly LOOK at your dipstick and observe the COLD and HOT markings, guess what they are for......

Fill the transmission via the dipstick tube to the max cold mark and stop. Run the engine, move gear selector from P through the ranges and back to P, leave engine idling, remove dipstick (you won't get a face full of ATF don't worry) and most likely the level will have dropped, again top up to the max cold mark and stop.

Keep doing this until the level remains at the max cold mark, then go for a drive to heat up the ATF then once your back home, check dipstick with engine still running and see where your level is, it should be near max hot, if not top up to this level and your done.

The box is sitting out of the car so its dripped as much as it can drip out, I haven't taken the oil pan off so there may be some residue still left in there.

And thanks for the thought through instructions, pretty much consolidating what I already knew but I will be doing it with a Nissan mech/he will be doing it.

Exactly what Chris said mate.....

......If you're refilling from dry (IE the torque converter has been drained of all oil too) then you're looking at in the region of 8 litres!!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

You gonna change the filter?

Don't think so, I'm not expecting this box to last another 5k miles, I just want a cheap swap.
