What is this block of metal in my boot?

1990 Z32 TT.

So I was stripping the interior of my boot lid to refurb the rubber seals etc, and noticed this block attached to the bootlid.

I thought maybe it was part of the mechanism for the (removed) rear windscreen wiper, but there are no connections. It's just a metal block connected by rubber to the brackets that bolt it to the bootlid via the holes to the left and right of the block in the picture (2x10mm bolts).

Just wondering if anyone knows what its purpose is? Weight distribution? Bolt on block to replace a windscreen wiper mechanism?

Cheers

There is just so much we don't know about the z32 and learn new things all the time.

Spot on Gaz, numerous area`s on the zed had really exacting attention by Nissan in the design stage and "over engineering " is the norm but at the same time they got so many parts wrong like fitting Cedric front wing indicators, spongy spoilers, very badly designed sill returns and wheel arch structures that rusted out, dodgy electrical parts to name just a few, but, it was an eighties car so these kind of things are to be expected but for the time the greatness of the car was unsurpassed.

If while all of this was going on they tasked a section of the team to look at tailgate vibration, counter balance weight or a place to hide drugs who the heck knows, the original premise is long gone, but either way the "actual" real life, day to day let`s get serious result is a fat zero ! leave it fitted or take it out and nothing changes, of course if you have weak struts or an over heavy wet spoiler, removing the weight will give a short term advantage which can be helpful.
