I was informed that the overhead M25 cameras were set to record at 85+mph, otherwise they would never keep up with the paperwork, it's a reliable source but not fact so that's just my understanding.

Of course I never go over 70mph anyhow.....:innocent:

There are a number of different types of cameras on the M25, you have the stealth cameras and also the gantry cameras, ALL being digital. The overhead gantry cameras only work when the sign is there to advise you of the current speed limit, all other times, they're switched off. They are not set to 85mph or whatever.

The other cameras are the stealth cameras that you occasionally see bolted to the side of some gantries along some stretches, they're quite easy to spot to be honest. There is certainly not a 'zero tolerance' 70 limit on these. As to them being set to 85 and over, this is also unlikely to be the case. There is no substantiating evidence anywhere and as per 'guidelines', would expect them to be set to 79 (10% +2mph).

The argument about the amount of paperwork is outweighed by the revenue generated by the fine - everything is automated now anyway, so actual work involving processing this is completely minimal. Long gone are the analogue systems which the first speed cameras and systems employed. As an example, TFL will trace owners of their cars into Europe if they've forgotten to pay the measly £2.50 or whatever it is to cross the Dartford Crossing, sending out speeding fines automatically is a no brainer.

It's a shame the cameras don't catch the :asshole: who now cruise at 60mph in lane 3 since the M25 became 4 lanes, do people NEVER look in their mirrors!

M25 lane discipline is absolutely tragic. The worst section for this is between the M40 and M1 interchanges. That stretch which actually has a stretch with the stealth cameras on is the worst on the M25 for lane discipline and the worst I've ever experienced, parts of it are 5 lanes. Give people more lanes and they have less of an idea where they should be and there starts the congestion!

Exactly, the idiots that sit in lane 3 doing 60mph are now forcing lorries to undertake, it's complete mayhem on the 25 now, at least with 3 lanes most drivers kept in the right lane and it was ordered.

Not entirely the case as the new Digital speed cameras going up on the east of the M25 and M20 (no doubt elswhere) have a zero tolerance for going over 70mph or the regulated controlled limit that may be in place.......................

Not so mate! Sure, some of the new digital cameras on the M25 are active all the time; but zero tolerance is a complete myth, they are still set at "sensible" limits. When the limit is posted at 70, you will not get flashed for passing at 80. Fact!

I agree, I imagine the worry is that if 80 is the norm for a 70 limit, it wouldn't be too long for 90 to be the norm for an 80 limit. I would think we would all agree most people don't bat much of an eyelid going 10mph above any speed, whether you think it's a good idea or not. I personally don't have any problem with the current status quo of you can get away with 80.

Another theory I would also disagree with. Thing is, most people will always drive at a speed they (and perhaps their car) feel comfortable at. People don't cruise at 80-90mph just because the limit is 70mph; they do it because it feels right for them. Raising the limit to 100mph will not necessarily increase overall speeds - sure you might get the odd person flouting it in a big way, but they do that anyway. However, it might make our motorways a better place to be because, I believe, it will reduce dangerous "bunching" and lane hogging.

Here, because the limit is 70, Mr Safety will sit for mile upon mile in lane 2 or 3 at 68mph; just because he's obeying the limit and might want to overtake that other car doing 67mph 500 yards ahead. However in Germany, Herr Sicher is appreciative that the Porsche flying up behind him at 300 km/h wants to get past - so he moves over pretty damn sharpish!

As for front number plates, sure, they are ugly. But get rid of them? Not a good idea IMO - in the event of an incident, we all need to quickly be able to identify an errant vehicle, so as to trace the car/driver at a later stage if they do not stop. Which is a more frequent occurrence than we might think!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Id have thought they'd be driving away from you with the back number plate facing you. Hopefully not trying to run over witnesses.

I think it would be nice for styling. But not very practical in reality

Most likely - but with the front 'plate then other witnesses who saw the incident from that angle, would also be able to catch the number as it drove off in their direction. It makes sense to keep number plates, front and back, so I'm not signing!

Tend to agree. Take it off for a couple photos and then pop it back on for driving.

Kinda hard to try and explain why I think people are comfortable with the speed they go, but I'll have a go. My point was that I wouldn't be surprised if people were comfortable doing 80 because they're just used to it. Limit is 70, some people do 80, slowly more and more people are exposed to that and think yea alright this is fine, I can cruise at 80. Then you introduce an 80 limit, so some people push that to 90. So you spend more time surrounded by people going 90, start to get used to it, you're kids grow up in a world where people do 90, and that slowly becomes the norm. So I wouldn't be surprised if it would just creep up and up, and maybe that's why they don't want to increase it.

In reality though I'm sure it's just because it would look like a bad move to a lot of people so they'll just keep the status quo of we won't stop you.

I don't think the speed limit has much bearing on whether people lane hog, it's just a lack of education and just plain selfishness sometimes. When I drove in France last year their use of lanes was absolutely impeccable, whether someone was coming up behind them or not. And their limit is what, 80mph or so, so the real world speeds were no different to ours, and slower than Germany, but they still have that culture.

The difference is that France's roads have a fraction of the traffic that UK roads have, most of their 'Autoroute' are dual carriageways and to be honest, most people know which lane to get in here on a dual carriageway.

I will agree with you though, French driving standards are better than those of the UK.

Generally that's true. However driving in places like Paris and Lyon is hell, it's like India. There are literally no rules, double, triple parking, nudging cars with yours to get In spaces the driving standard is beyond bad it's down right scarey. When they all go down south for their holidays that driving goes with them.

Compare where my parents live in rural northern France to Lyon and it's like two different countries. I literally wouldn't dare take any car to Lyon as it would come back recked, they have zero respect for other people's cars or their own.

You have any evidence to support that?

As in am i professionaly linked with the technology or its implementation, no! However ideas a umber of reports end of last year and earlier this year about the installation and intention of the HADECS cameras in there new locations.

It doesn't take long with a Google search to find the press releases that were issued at the time and the level of prosecutions these cameras were churning out when first installed.

I understand there is however a petition going through parliament to have these cameras painted or removed.

In the interest of being entirely pedantic, that article says they have zero tolerance as standard, but that doesn't necessarily mean they are implemented with zero tolerance. Was interesting to read the old 10%+2 thing is a recommendation not a rule, wonder if that's true

Last year on the A11 a policeman hiding after a row of trees got me, I was overtaking a van, no other traffic in sight, because I was overtaking my speed was 97, I did not have a clue did not feel that fast to me (driving my Jag). Needless to say I was prosecuted, fine and points, to me it was unnessasary seeing there was 1 other vehicle on that stretch of the road. I now drive on motorways at whatever speed I want, I will undertake in lane 1 if everyone's in the other lanes it seems to be the clearest most of the time. On normal roads I drive at the speed limit, old people pulling out kids crossing road, dogs, cats. Last time I had a speeding ticket was 29years ago in my younger days.

Rather than clutter this thread up with another topic we did cover the HADECS cameras here:

Things may have changed since then, but I've seen nothing to suggest that when the motorway variable overhead

limits are switched off that the cameras revert to flash at anything over 70mph (so called zero tolerance). They

may however be set as per the ACPO (now NPCC) guidelines of 10%+2 (79 mph).

Because the NHS has to pick up the bill if you crash!

But yes I undertake all the time, get so fed up with selfish people hogging the middle lane

Dead right there Si....!

Driving home from my parents the other Sunday - late afternoon around 4pm - I covered the journey from the M11 to J18; in and out of lanes 1 and 2 pretty much all the way at a steady 70-80mph. Most of the traffic was confined to lanes 3 and 4; all driving at 60-70mph....!! I wasn't undertaking; I was just cruising in the left two lanes as they were empty.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:
