My Z failed as it has xion headlights! HIDs r fitted.

They say the headlights need washers?

Is this true?

Featured Replies

No its not true, take it elsewhere, many of us have HIDS and never have a problem

It is an EU requirement. It's a bit of a grey area if they're factory-fitted like that, but you might be in trouble with aftermarket ones.

Its the same place I took it last year & it passed!

They said the MOT changes came in last April.

Thats a joke as my last MOT was in June 2015!

So basically I have to except it?

They said they can put normal bulbs in but that requires changing my fittings.

To swap to regular bulbs on an aftermarket HID system all you need to do is unplug the HID unit and Plug in the regular bulbs to the original loom. No changes to fittings should be required.

However according to the following the Mot rules do not state the headlamps must have Headlamp washers, only that they may have headlamp washers and if they do then they must work.

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted, they must work; however, it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases, the benefit of the doubt must be given."

So to clarify; according to that if aftermarket HIDs are fitted, benefit of the doubt is given so that it doesn't require self levelling or headlamp washers. Correct?

Thats my understanding. Presuming that website is up to date.

I imagine we have a few MOT testers on here that could confirm.

I asked my MOT tester exactly that question before I took my white zed for MOT in case I needed to swap the Std bulbs back in. His answer was only if the washers were originally fitted and therefore need to work. If not fitted then ok to have hid kit installed.

Washers are NOT REQUIRED here, I'm a tester art and can assure you your Mot tester is wrong in this instance. A common failure but only due to the tester not understanding the test criteria as usual.

And to clarify the benefit of any doubt regarding the Mot must always be given to the customer.

If you want to maintain a relationship with the garage go back and explain your situation, making a complaint to the DVSA is long winded and pointless.

Sorry to hear this Art, played a similar game myself this year. Funny what people get stuck in thier head. I remember being held at the side of the road in the rain because my 1982 car didn't have side indicators and plod was convinced it required them. I didn't even get an apology for that.

Testing standards in the UK are rapidly going down hill.

I had to spend almost an hour a couple of weeks ago explaining that failing my Zed on high idle Co emissions was horseshit as it wasn't on the Annex and thus not required to have a modern test.

I had to drag out a copy of the VOSA guidelines on Emissions testing and point to the relevant sections.

Went into garage this morning armed with my notes on MOT & HID Xion headlights/washers info.

Garage says the tester will pass it then!

Had to have a steering gaiter fitted & for some reason my fog light wasnt working.

I had new gaiter in my boot & a red bulb!

So Im not the most popular customer to them at this moment!

But thanks for all the positive info received:)

Hi Lexx,

do you have a copy or a link to the specific guidelines, as i had a similar discussion last year, when my zed failed a few times on that, until it eventually passed.

As the MOT is due again soon, it would be good to arrive already armed with the info..

And here's the Nissans listed in the Annex.

Apologies for poor pic quality. Photobucket seems to have reduced quality.

I'll re upload from my laptop later tonight.

Same applies then. If your car is pre 1/5/95 and not listed in the ANNEX then it only goes through a basic emissions test
