What started off as a minor niggle has gotten considerably louder.

I can hear it best when I open the door of the car, at idle. When driving it appears to disappear altogether. The only way I can describe the sound is a gargling or liquid.

I originally thought, cooling system but I’m now really unsure. Any suggestions?

Cheers

Do you still have your AIVs?

Most probably, yes.

Will these be the cause you think?

i doubt it would be the cooling system, if it was airlocked you would have other issues, and it wouldn't gurgle until you switched the engine off. try the AIV delete as above removed mine last year quite an easy job once you get to the bits.

Just wanted to ask on here if anyone has performed this task before and if so, did you use something off the shelf to plug the pipes?

Speaking to Jimmer at Powerzed, he said he'd be surprised if the pipe connecting to the exhaust would come off without breaking up. Better to plug further down the pipe than to attempt that.

If someone has done it before, what is the size of the plug that has to be plugged?

Try disconnecting the AIV solenoids electrical connection (circled in red in pic below ) that way they will not open and should be quiet then, remove later if you wish.

I had this problem I took the inner arch out and drilled a 2mm hole at the bottom of the plastic filter holder let it drain and left it alone never come back
