For the last couple of days, I've had what was once a dream car parked on the drive: a Supra Aerotop TT6. :)

I wanted one of these for the longest time, but the only market that got the manual box in an Aerotop was the USA, so it would've meant a manual conversion or buying one that'd already been converted.

In my nearly 3 years of Z32 ownership though, I've found the Supra to be slipping down the list of dream cars and, now I've been able to compare the two back to back properly, I've found that (in my opinion, at least) the Supra is to be found wanting....

It's a very brash car. Where the Zed is sleek and fairly subtle, the Supra is incredibly obvious - it's all big curves and big lights! It's also a very big car, especially in comparison to my little 2-seater. Dare I say that it's also a little vulgar...?

I think the Supras look very much like a car of their time now, where the Zed seems pretty timeless. I found myself looking past the Supra to look at mine, possibly because it's mine but more likely because it's just the prettier car!

There are other niggles too: I've discovered that I really dislike the vents at the base of the rear arches, the rear bumper is too bulbous for my tastes (which makes the rear plate seem utterly lost) and the stock rear spoiler is not a pretty thing at all.

Then I found myself imagining a Zed with the Strosek kit on (with the vents in the rear arches) and a mid-height spoiler and realised that there was a very real chance that the designers were trying to emulate a stock Supra's look! Not a fan, I'm afraid.

Don't get me wrong; I wouldn't object to owning a Supra, especially in the Aerotop form, but I wouldn't even consider moving on from the Zed for one of them. I love my car's presence and I like the fact that it doesn't shout about itself. It just gets on with what it has to, whilst looking impossibly beautiful.

That's my opinion, anyway. :thumbup1:

Similar. I like the Supra, however as a design-piece, it just doesn't tick the boxes (for me anyway). I think the dash is awful and looks like something out of a Scania truck, you mentioned the vents, you know my opinion on vents that don't do much or anything, it looks like a jellybean The I-6T sounds good, but it doesn't sound exotic like the V6T.

They're impressive machines though and are advanced over the Z32, for obvious reasons, but in terms of visuals, I much prefer the MK3 Supra and the classic Celica-Supra prior to that.

If I was to do a build involving the Supra name, it would be a MK3 Supra aerotop with a 2JZ motor. :) Best of both worlds - these seem to have aged more gracefully I think and have a timeless appeal like the Z32, something the MK4 just doesn't have for me.

Assuming we're talking about the mk.4, I think the front end (stock) looks very 90s and not particularly nice today (and to an extent the Z :( ), but the rear, as with the z32 still looks nice by todays standards.

I think that the mk4 only really looks good today with bodykits and 'JDM' styling. They are probably the fairest comparison to the z32, but they do not live up to the hype over the Z IMO.

Simon (Mondo), pics ffs!

I was genuinely too busy working to take any snaps of them together, Joel - I had a three-piece headling to trim, a pair of sunvisors, gear gaiter, armrest and handbrake handle! His seats and door handles were ready for when he arrived, of course.

Ended up working through the night on Wednesday to get everything finished as the owner had driven up from London and was only staying around here for one night. :pinch:

This is the Supra in question though:

And this is what the interior now looks like:

It does look nice, I'll grant you that, but it just doesn't set my world on fire. Nice seats by the way.

You are joking, right? The Supra is one of the most hyped up cars in recent Japanese automotive history. That's part-in-thanks to the F&F films. It's far more distinguishable to the average-Joe than a Z32 ever will be, but that's why I like the Z32, no one knows quite what it is.

Yes its one of the most hyped cars, but is it good enough to fur fill that. It's not leagues over the Z32, they didn't make that much more power, but is it double the price as good?

Me too, but do you not think that given the right exposure it could have the chance to be sought after as much as the Supra? I can't see that the Supra is that much better than the Z.

Part of 'better' is subjective. If we're talking looks, it really isn't. The Z32 is, IMO, far nicer looking, but that's a personal preference. Where the Supra does excel over the Z32 is its mechanicals. The 2JZ isn't my choice of engine, but it is an extremely strong engine and modifying it is not only cheaper, but the output is substantially higher. Handling is not better than the Z32, it's on par with, although I don't like the way the Supra 'feels', but that probably has more to do with the cabin environment than anything else.

The Supras higher price comes in part to the lower production volumes, the higher purchase cost and the fact that it's quite a bit newer. That's not really to do with being 'hyped', more to do with economies of scale. Having said that, there are a LOT on ebay, more than the Z32, but production numbers were substantially less than the Z32 (globally). In the US, they're worth twice as much as they are over here, the gap is far wider.

'Hype' is something altogether different. The Delorean DMC-12 for example is a hyped car - but it's also a bit of a turd. Scrappy handling, dire V6 Renault engines and less-than-favourable build quality.

I've always thought the supras looked a bit like a clown car, they're too rounded imo

At best, I think the Mk4 Supra is ‘alright’, although if it was my cash on the line I wouldn’t buy one. Unless I already had all the cars on my ‘wish list’ and I was bored. Then again, the same could be said about most cars.:whistling:

Whilst the 2JZ is a cracking engine with lots of potential, there are too many other things I don’t like about the Mk4 that put me off. As Funkysi pointed out, the dash looks awful and I’ve yet to see one with the right combination of bodykit and factory styling that looks appealing to me.

If I was in the market for a ‘fast Toyota’ I’d go for a MK2 MR2 Turbo. I currently have an NA waiting to be rehomed to make way for my newly acquired Zed. If I could justify/afford to keep them both I would. The MR2 is a fantastic little car and I’d take one of them over a Supra every time!

This one passed me a couple days ago, damn does it have road presence but it has very aggressive styling in contrast with the Zs subtle sleek look. The rounded styling it more like an rx7 FD than a Z.

I love the fact that the "penis extension" is parked outside an adult shop.

Now don't get me wrong I'm not saying certain sort of person drives Supras......honest.......:whistling:

One thing missing from this thread is them parked next to each other............

I agree with most the comments on here - although the Supra is a very nice car, the Z is so far prettier and I do like and agree with what Si said about people not really knowing what the Zed is;)

The Supra tries too hard on the exterior and is pretty dull on the inside. (Although I do like those seats Mondo!) I do like my mates in the picture though, its styling is very tasteful

This is the best 300zx and Supra photo. They do look awesome together. 300 for me looks better. The rear end is the Supra's best aspect, whereas the Z32 looks good from almost every angle.

I think we might all be a little biased on here!

Certainly on looks the Z32 is a better looking car, but IMO only as a standard car, the Supra to me response much better to a body kit our Z32 doesn't.

In terms of durability I believe the Supra to be a stronger car all round really.

So Nissan got it right, while Toyota got it wrong then, yeah...? ;)

That's because the Z naturally is a better looking car and looks better without any bodykit whatsoever. TBH, only subtle stuff works on Supras too as they start looking like something out of the F&F if they have too much stuff glued to them.

I really like the supra mk4. I like the looks and the sound from the straight six engine. I don't like the body kits people throw on them since the fast and furious shit films.

I thought the F&F films were all pretty cheesy and silly. I've never liked the F&F franchise. I think the acting is moderate at best, the story lines awful and most of the cars looked nasty. Never understood their popularity if I'm honest. F&F came out in 2001 when I was 22, so it's not an age thing....I just think they're crap.

I've never seen one all the way through but after the 15 mins I did watch I just think I would rather watch a dog pee up a lamp post

i like the supra very much total legend there is no getting away from that, i would be very happy to own one, the supra and the 300zx are both great the 300 being a bit of a underdog witch is not a bad thing, both cars can look like total crap and also look just amazing, depending how deep you pockets are or coarse, its safe to say in stock form the supra wins on performance but after that there as good and bad as each other there is no winner or loser here. the 300zx being a lot cheaper to buy is also a good thing, so least any budget can afford on were the supra is not in every ones price bracket
