hi,

i have just bought an imported 300zx twin turbo automatic. and i am having the time of my life. however, as with all good things i`m not sure of certain things. i was hoping that you could help answer my questions. i almost feel like a virgin!!!!

1. the cruise control on my car doesn`t work. many people with Twin turbos have said that this is a good thing as the cruise control usually ruins the turbos. what is the truth? should i get it sorted?

2. when i switch on the car i am supposed to have a light which reads HICAS that is supposed to come on temporarly like the brake light etc. this is not the case? what could be wrong and how important is it to get fixed. a mechanic has told me that my 4 wheel steer is working despite no HICAS light!

3. by my left knee i have two gadgets. one keeps the engine running when the car is switched off for a set period of time to allow the turbos / engine to cool (i think) and i have no idea what the second gadget is. when i bought the car i was told that it was a turbo timer or something to that effect. it has a little knob which when turned changes the reading from 0 through to 14 (0, 0.1, 0.2....1, 1.2... etc) what is the function of this? what should it be set on? how do i use it?

4. sometimes when i switch on the car, which by the way purrs like a cat, i get a very strong smell of petrol. i phoned the guy from whom i bought the car and he said not to worry because this was due to the dump valves! (the car is an automatic) it does make the characteristic dump valve nosie when the car is accelerating and changing gears. should i be worried about the smell? and is it possible for an automatic to have dump valves or something imitating dump valves?

i think that is it for now. i hope to become a member of the 300zx community and enjoy the pleasure of coming to meets etc etc. i am sorry that this message is long but like most virgins, i am full of questions and emotions.

thanks

if it was bad for turbos, they would not have put it on the car as a standard feature.Get it working if you want it. There are tech documnets regarding this

if the hicas light is not on the car is working. if it comes on then it has disabled itself. There are again (im to lazy to look for them lol) proceedures in which to do a diagnostic on your HICAS to see what the problems are.

the one is a turbo timer (whats the name on the box)

the other one , again what is the name, it could be an AFR (air fuel ratio) devise ect, i suggest dont fiddle with it until you knwo what it does.

Take a screw driver and tighten up all the fuel pipes forpm the pump ect, and check for a fuel leak. Autos can have dump valves and again try determin which types you have, ie BLITZ, HKS.

And finally welcome to the madhouse. There are loads of tech sites out there, with questions and answers for you.

Andy P on this site also has a good site regarding tech.

thanks for the speedy reply.

1. i have checked the gadget by my knee. it say Greddy on it. it also has a small button called overtake boost. which when pressed counts down from ten, although nothing interesting happens when it reaches zero apart from a beep. so does this help you to determine what it is and how i can use it effectively. the current setting is 0 although sometimes it reads 1!!!!!!!

2. i have checked the dump valves. the are Blitz. does that help? if i had i feul leak how difficult if it to get sorted. i have noticed that if i fill up the tank and drive around for a few days (5/6 days) at normal speeds and fewer than 200 miles i reach empty. is that related or is that normal for a 3 litre car.

thanks again

First of all, welcome to the Zed-Zoo. Hope you have many happy motoring miles. :D :D

Sounds like you have a few niggly issues with your new car. First off, cruise control does not ruin the turbos, it uses them hardly any more than normal driving does.

Also, it depends on what you call "normal" speeds. :D At best I've had about 28 / 29mph out of my Zed...at worst about 11mpg... :D

think your self lucky, mines doing 50 miles to 20 quid just normal town driving , cruise on mine dont work either but then i hardly cruise, but sounds like u got a nice one there, happy zedding.

1. That is a boost controler. It turns up the power of your turbos. Stock pressure is 9PSI or 0.6bar. (If you didnt know, more boost = more power :D) I suggest you keep it at that for now untill some one can get a look at your car and tell you if it has been modified correctly. You really needed a new ECU chip to run higher boost other wise you could cause serious damage to your car. I doubt that your car isnt chipped but better be safe.

Dont turn you boost over 1.0bar anymore on than that will cause damage unless the turbos and intercoolers have been upgraded. Again you really need some one to look at it to tell you.

The overtake boost button will increase the boost for a few seconds allowing you to overtake things safely.

Congrats and welcome.

Where are you from?

F.T.

What does the boost guage on the dash read when it's on full boost? Should be be about 3/4 around (9.5psi I think?).

If the cruise control doesn't work try pulling up on the brake pedal and then try setting it. If this works the brake pedal switch need adjusting which is right up in the dash behind the instrument cluster. Easiest way of getting to it is removing the cluster.

:D

(Oh and welcome to the madhouse:D )

I wouldnt trust the stock boost gauge though. Its just for show I think.

My one started showing the correct boost but got worse and worse. I get 15psi now :D

sorry to change topic but on my j spec i dont have a psi meter its something like hmmg and goes up to 7 whats that equate to in psi

Yes,

I've got the same as Beermonster,it goes from -7 through to 0 then onto +7.

F.T.

...and when we go from positive psi to negative psi, we get a goosehonk as we cross the 0 :D

Yep,

Bloody noise!!

F.T.

The mmHg scale is "millimetres of Mercury" - I think its roughly half the equivalent PSI measurement.

What the hell is the "goosehonk" noise?? :D

goosehonk is as ive found out from this informative board is when the boost pressure drops when u come off throttle, its the recirc vavles or summthing, u dont kinda notice it with system of a down at full volume tho.

How Bizarre!

Just listening to "Chop Suey" (best song on the Toxicity Album) as reading your post .... :D :D

Well, it's almost Christmas and the office is quiet:eek:

CheerZ,

hi i was told on my GTIR that hmmg+7 is one bar of boost 14.7 psi but i am not sure :o

chop suey :D:D:D cool song i used it on this clip.

Stock boost guage is not very accurate.

UK dash gauges are calibrated in psi. J-spec ones in x100mmHg (hundreds of mm of Mercury. One atmosphere or bar can support a column of mercury 750mm (from memory))

a converter is here (and it converts lots of other stuff too)

http://www.convertit.com/Go/Convert...t/Converter.ASP

Pressure UK spec J spec

0.48 bar = 7 psi = 3.6 100mmHg

0.6 bar = 8.7 psi = 4.5

0.62 bar = 9psi = 4.7

0.93 bar = 13.5psi = 7

1 bar = 14.5 psi = 7.5 x100mmHg = 750mmHg

(copied and pasted from somewhere else as I am bone idle :) )

Cheers - Gio
