cool man nice. i wonder how and if you could get a z to go and handle as good as the gtr ? and how much money that would cost. you could make the power with out to much problem. just an idea

The car's acceleration is intoxicating! And Skline is just as fast but in a raw power feel.. I'll love to push it to the limits

And it's an automatic...

Not quite the same as the archachic autobox in a z32 though is it. It actually changes gear with sense not as when it feels like it, like mid way through a bloody corner.

You can get flappy paddles and override the z32 auto box though if you'd like. Just a bit costly :-)

....and pointless. The Z32 autobox is not a racebox and shifting is slow and you have a choice of 4 whole gears.

Not if you're a paraplegic with slightly over the norm interest in driving :-P Don't you have 5 with the overdrive? The guy I spoke to said it shifted as fast as you'd shift a manual. Not speed shifting like the drift king but plain normal shifting

....indeed, which makes it pointless. lol :)

You still effectively have 4 gears with the auto-box. O/D just holds the change a little higher up the rev range.

I have nothing wrong with autobox in the Z32, it does what it says on the tin. It is good if you're into traffic light grand prix or 1/4 mile, it's just rather agricultural for me. Hearing a manual shifting Z32 TT does sound better too, especially on run-down.

Nissan did their job and made the fastest z32 with an auto box. Now in my NA the 5spd (owned both so I know) is a faster option if drag racing is your goal. Can't wait to install alc to see if any improvements can be made. Sidenote the Majority of the world uses standard shifts because it's a cheap quick alternative that even old ladies in most countries drive a manual because autos are not the norm and are an upgrade(it's the norm here manuals are rare). It really depends on where you live and what's hot for you are your needs in a sports car. A sports car is much more than 0-60 it's about style, handling, braking, driver feel etc. and the z32 has that auto or manual box. But I love the fun factor of the stick speed shifting & revving the motor in shifts! It's fun

It's really humorous that we're debating personal choice so much. We all like the Z32 that's the top star in the big picture, that's why we're here. I was just goating about the GTR not being manual to end this silly civil war. I'm sure every person here knew the tranny their car had before they purchased it... So it was chosen for that moment.. I like manuals I like automatics.

Sidenote the older manual shift Skyline spits flames sometimes which is fresking awesome! And the sound is melodious yet horrific!

I've driven the R35 GTR and I love the autobox in it. It's such an incredible vehicle to drive.

z32 Manual TTs came with bigger AR turbos and different cam shafts to reduce power and lag. Stock for stock manuals are quicker, if the drivers equal.

Autos do make faster drag cars, however the Z32 autobox is a bit weak.

There's a bit of a stigma about automatics over here, regardless of the car it's in. However that stigma is based around old fashioned automatics. For a daily commuter I'd quite like an auto, for a fun car though, unless it's a new auto I'd pick manual every time. I've driven and owned a z32 auto and manual. Manual is 100% better, not only did the autobox make the car sluggish feeling and did irratating things they seem to break for a hobby.

You're right the Americans have never been into manuals the way Europeans and other people have, but nowadays more and more people are buying autos even over here.

Even I like my daily/family car to be auto, and my current one is actually faster 0-60 with an automatic than manual and that's not even a fancy type of auto just a regular 6speed. So the technology certainly has come a long way.

But in my Z? Manual all the way, that drop from 5th to 3rd and flooring the pedal is just addictive!

I think it has something to do with the way autos are now designed and manufactured which has help increase their popularity in Europe. Their gear-change is lightening quick as many are now dual clutch systems. Many VAG vehicles have their DSG, most supercars, higher end sports cars and luxury cars have them also. Most GM and French manufactured vehicles still use archaic and rather agricultural autoboxes unfortunately, but I'm sure that'll change as manufacturing processes become cheaper as they continue to be build en masse.

Nissan have tried introducing the CVT automatic transmission on a couple of its US manufactured cars, something that Daf pioneered in the 60s. We had a few cars in the 80s and 90s that used this system, Fiat and Ford used this in a number of their cars, but it's a transmission that's never really caught on.

my daily driver is a bmw x5 and its auto, would have been crap as a manual. my work van is a manual i wish is was auto to. my z was auto and i converted it to manual. so theres good in auto and manual

By far the worst design is the standard manual gearbox which is shifted by 2 crap windscreen wiper motors and a stupid worthless clutch pump as found on the fiesta for example, stupid stupid cars

Never had a problem with my manual. Silky smooth gear change. I love the gear change on it actually - all stock, even stock nylon bushes (replaced). A very positive feeling and shifting manual IMO.

Totally agree, the manual is one of the best transmissions I have dealt with, short throws, silky-smooth and a somewhat heavy feeling, can't understand why people replace the standard shiftknob

Stock shiftnob and mechanism are the only ones to go. Well engineer from the off. Short-throw shifters are awful and ruin the feel IMO.

I had a short throw with my centerforce clutch on my 91 ZX and it was precise and held 50% better than stock! Really helped the car get down the road

It is all personal preferences, however I've driven lots of Z32s over the years, many with short throw shifters and not one of them comes close to the feel of a fully working and well maintained stock shifter. Maybe your stock shifter was worn in the first place. ;)
