Doing some research for what will best suit my requirements. I'm looking for a wideband AFR with an output that is triggered when the AFR is out of range. So I can connect this to a boost solenoid or injector harness to reduce risk.

Is AEM's Failsafe the only product that does this, or are there other brands or makes. I don't really want or need the data logging. I notice their cheaper model says it has an 0-5v output but fails to say what it's purpose is.

Can anyone expand on this please?

I'm running 2x AEM P/n 30-4900 Failsafe gauges, is that what you are looking at?

I am not sure if you'd want to use a wideband AFR signal for this purpose..

If you are looking for some sort of extra fail safe other then a knock monitor, I think monitoring EGT levels and an EGT sensor/alarm/monitoring device with an output signal of some sort would be better (imo).

(The effects of) high EGT's can be far more destructive then running lean for a few seconds...although running lean can lead to high EGT's, high EGT's can also occur if AFR's are well within range (but something else is wrong.)

Gauges/alarms with an additional 0-5v signal can be used by many aftermarket ECU's as an extra (sensor) input, so the ECU can act when a certain threshold/voltage is reached. (eg. limit boost, lower ignition timing, cut fuel, etc)

But in theory the 0-5v signal could also be used more simple eg. to drive a transistor to switch a relay

...or you could use it as an input signal for a small and simple MCU (like an Arduino or similar), which can give you similar options as to what an aftermarket ECU can do with this 0-5v signal.

Sorry to jump in, how do you rate the aem failsafe gauges, Looking at fitting a pair to mine.

Ok, so it would appear then that even the cheaper model, the AEM Uego, has a 0-5v output that is active within a range of 10-20. Maybe I need to speak to AEM. My idea was simply to attach the output signal to a solenoid, when it's opened it would short the vac line on the MBC and return me to wastegate pressure. I know it's not flawless or fool proof, it is better insurance than the stock knock sensor.

 

The more expensive one the AEM Failsafe actually has a value which can be changed. And do exactly what I want, whilst logging the whole process. However if the Uego unit enables me to achieve the same thing without logging but requires a touch of faffing about. It's not an issue. I just need to know exactly how it that model works.

Yeah the Failsafe and Ugeo. Also the innovate unit. I just want to find a unit that shows me realtime AFR values and enables a solenoid or relay to be activated or deactivated.

Yes mine are setup to trip an earth signal/wire to a relay to interrupt the boast controller if the AFR values go outside of a pre defined limit. Not as good as a standalone obviously, but gives a greater protection to DET.

Have a look at the instructions of you would ash and see under what circumstances that output voltage changes.
