The problem I have:-

I manage a few miles and then lose 1,2,3,D and R....... turn her off...... wait 2 or 3 minutes, start and get another 10 yards or so and then repeat process to limp home..... 100 yards at a time!

Seems to be correct fluid level on dipstick....

I haven't touched her in months for my own Sanity and fear of Divorce....... I needed to take a step back and read up....... lol

I have finally got enough time in leu to book wednesday off work..... as long as it isn't peeing it down or blowing a gale outside still...... (Wife at work, kids at school)

I am going to warm her up and try to test the transmission again and see if she throws up any codes.

If not then get her fluid drained and drop the pan again to check the filter seal?

I keep trying to find out what could cause the problem I have of loss of any drive when she warms up, but returns when you let the fluid settle for a couple of minutes..... then drive temporarily returns!

I keep thinking loss of line pressure due to o'ring not sealing on the filter?

Lack of fluid,

Blockage in system

or

Failing electronics??

If it was the clutch packs, surely it would just slip all the time hot or cold?

And not in all gears?

Only other thing I thought was unlucky and have 2 dodgy torque converters??

I can't find anything on the net with this same problem where drive returns....... What am I missing?

I now have the full manual for the auto transmission, a full breakdown of parts used and suppliers of the parts....... just need to learn how it works, find what is causing the problem and fix it...... lol

Really chuffed, opened up the gearbox, took the strainer out and gave it a good clean, full of brown gunk!! Put it all back together, gearbox works like a charm, difference is incredible!! Gear change is very smooth, no more jerking, acceleration is spot on!

Would like to thank everybody for their advice, absolutely spot on!

Nice one Paul....... Glad to hear you had success in getting her back on the road.......

This just proves that the auto box needs as much TLC as the engines get........ and cleaning the filter should be part of your servicing schedule!

They often get forgotten and thought of as something that needs no servicing and will just last till it dies.....

I did just that and haven't changed the fluid since I got the car in 2001.........

My fault she has failed as I should have looked after it and cleaned the filter and changed the fluid when I serviced the engine!!

Great news Paul, glad you've finally solved the issue..

At least it's put an end to the spend and you can get behind the wheel with confidence again..

Happy zedding mate.

Many thanks, really chuffed. Must admit its not something I have really thought about in the past, but after seeing how much gunk builds up in the strainer I will certainly be cleaning it out again. As Jeff suggested I think I will give it a couple of months and change the oil again. All the best with yours.

Cheers mate, now the weather is warming up I'm looking forward to taking the roof down, feel the rush of air on my bald head!!!

Well today is stripping the original Transmission day........ Had a look in the overdrive servo and found it full of sludge, so it looks like the frictions have burnt out....

So I have been looking at rebuilding it completely with all new clutches, steels, band, transgo shift kit, upgraded torque converter with a 3500 - 3800 rpm stall, bearings, seals and valve body....

Not a lot to get...... It make take a while to do, but will be fun doing it all..... lol

Still waiting for the new transmission cooler to arrive after 14 days of waiting for it to actually arrive it's not looking too good.....

Not going to start her up till I have cleaned out all the lines and replaced the cooler this time......

I have also bought an external transmission filter to catch anything in the future...... hopefully.....

Well after gloating that my gearbox was all sorted, things rapidly went downhill Friday night! Driving at a reasonable speed gearbox changed down, as the speed increased the gearbox tried to change up, there was a loud thud and the gears would not change up. Got off the road pulled up in a petrol station, stopped had a look for any obvious problems, but couldnt see nothing, no leaks from the gearbox. Went to reverse out, not a chance, a screeching sound but no movement!! Car would still move forward, so once again the car was low loaded back home.

Anybody any ideas?? Is it worth change the gearbox oil again??

Any suggestions would be gratefully received, my thoughts at the moment is to source another auto gearbox

Cheers

Reverse clutch?

I believe it is used when the transmission engages the overdrive.... There is a low, high and reverse clutch set in the box.

I have the manual for the auto box if you fancy a read about it?

I didn't want to sound negative after your apparent success with the box but in my experience an oil and filter change on a auto Transmission very rarely sorts any problems, failure of an old transmission shortly after an oil change is quite common I'm afraid, please mate don't waste your time and money doing any checks or DIY repairs, it needs an overhaul or a manual conversion. trust me I've been there plenty of times. Sorry for your bad luck bud.

as a guide ,

JT automatics say

NISSAN 300ZX V6 3.0L/ TURBO (1990-UP) RE4R03A 4 SPEED £795.00 Gearbox £250.00 Torque converter £190.00 remove and Refit £75.00 fluids £1,310.00 (exc VAT) £1,572.00 (inc VAT)

That's very reasonable if its a FULLY rebuilt box with a warranty, that fitted with a better oil cooler up front and a good check of wiring and ecu should last the life of the car if still stock and not abused.

I've got an auto box cheap if you want it, I'm only half hour away from you. In fact I've got two, but one is playing up.

I got an auto box from AndyZ last year, got it fitted total cost around £750 no problems!
