Hello!

Spoke to to respray shop today and just want to know if what I was told is accurate and reasonable!

I have a blue zed. I have an oem 99 spec front bumper in red which needs a respray. The guy said that it would be around 600 to respray the bumper as they wouldn't be able to get get very goo colour match - it will always look darker and stand ou apparently unless they did considerable blending work up through th fenders.

Does this so correct? I just wonder as in the past I have been quoted 300 quid for colour matched respray and he didn't mention anything about having to blend or it being a different colour.

Also, he suggested th best thing to do would be a full respray (which I do agree with) which would cost around 2k.

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I think £600 is to much is there any damage to the bumper as he got to take the old one off

I said I would fit the bumper so not too much work for them, pretty much mint OEM 99 spec. Although it is red and needs to be stripped. Had a professional job though so shouldn't need any repairs etc.

2k in comparison for a full respray actually seems decent.

blending in colours always looks crap you can always tell had a few cars done over the years and its just never looks rite,

what would your suggestion be Dan? you are in same position with me as you have the Blue bumper going on to your red car right?

blends will look okay if they're done well! If the colour is a bang on match it wont be very noticeable at all, especially if they machine polish the car. I had a silver bumper in a month ago ish, customer supplied some paint mixed up to match, and it was pretty close. He didn't want a blend but the bumper matched to the point of not noticing and on a silver that is impressive. Although 2k for a respray sounds about right depending on the overall condition.

am getting the whole cars painted so its ok for me.

blending in colours always looks crap you can always tell

No you cant.

If blending in looks crap its cos a crap painter did the job.

Our resident painter Boldy at Bodymech recently repainted a door, repaired the tailgate and blended in some bumper scuffs on my daughters metallic grey Mini Cooper S.....

The whole job is imaculate and 100% invisible. I cant see it even after he told me where he had blended.

And neither can she....and she is a fussy little miss when it comes to her much loved and chesished Mini.

Agreed, he did the front of my zed and the match is spot on. Mine is pearl white and supposedly really difficult to match, too.

3 stage pearls, heavy metallic, silvers/greys are all a pain to blend. I personally don't do a lot of blending as I mostly do small custom bits or full colour changes, but I try to avoid it as much as possibly anyway! that said, if done well they are unnoticeable.

My tuppence worth....

£600 sounds expensive - I guess the painter is not confident of his work!!

I have a TK3 blue Zed - and have had some paintwork done over the years. I have used 2 different body shops and both did a superb job of matching the colours.

Last summer, I had both my front wings replaced (I supplied the parts, the garage did the removal and re-fitting); I had a large dent repaired in the rear OS wing and a scuff repaired in the rear bumper. I also had the rust on the OSR wheel arch removed - they cut out the old section and welded in a new panel I bought from MJP. They painted the rear OS wing, driver's door and both the replacement front wings. They also had dent-buster remove the dings from the driver's door. All that came to £900 in labour and paint!

I'd find someone else to do your bumper mate...

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I'd agree with that though - again, depending on the quality of their work.....

205 gti white door blending in could see it let the car down.

black Honda prelude front wing as the light changed you could tell

white van bacj doors could see in any light

black bmw x5 front wing again can see when the sun comes out

Porsche boxster blue could see it so I get the whole car painted

bmw z3 red rear boot lid could tell from most angles.

all work was no the same place or guys that did it so was spread over the years and every time you could tell. an just saying what I seen with my own eyes,

Agree £ 600 is pants!

If a professional with no prep work? £ 250 max?

That shop said they had to strip the bumper first, but shouldn't they just sand it down a bit, and then primer and spray in blue? not completely strip all the paint.

Blending is how it's done to loose the color difference, if you just paint one panel and not the adjacent panel you will most likely see a difference, they blend across adjacent panels to loose the definitive stop start line, if done correctly it will be spot on, our bodyshop just finished a side paint job on a V12 Vantage, it is flawless and it was blended. £600 for a bumper in good condition is steep, if the paint on it is sound then they won't strip it, just key it prime it and paint it, I only paid £600 for front bumper, headlamp panel, stillen lip, stillen skirts and door fillers.

Hey? £600??? All they have to do is undercoat it white and the jobs ready to go!

If you're not that far from me in bedfordshire, I know a spray shop that would do it for around £200 and he does an impeccable job..

There you go! Bedfordshire is stones throw away!

Nice offer :thumbup1:

Plus a drive in the Z !

The alarm bells went off for me when he said he couldn't get a good colour match.

Find a different body shop

That would be brilliant! Could I get the details mate?

My local bodyshop is changing my oem 99 spec from black to silver for £200, including any blending required. £600 seems alot..

I always try to apply my work ethics - 3 quotes!
