Hey folks as per title I'd like to know what would be a good buy for a pair of smics. Im not looking to get 800+bhp but I am after the max amount of ponies out of the stock engine with the following mods:

EGR/Water delete

Carbon canister delete

K&N air filter

Decat, Down pipes

Veilside exhaust

Boost controller

Intake hard pipes

To be done

555 injectors (on hand)

smics

??

What I've been looking at are:

http://www.amsmotorsports.com/shop/ind/300zx-z32/forced-induction/ams-omega-z32-300zx-side-mount-intercoolers.html

https://conceptzperformance.com/z1-sidemount-intercoolers-smic-set-nissan-300zx-90-96-z32-z1-z32-smic-kt_p_1856.php

https://conceptzperformance.com/avs-side-mount-intercooler-kit-arc-spec-core-nissan-300zx-90-96-z32-avs-z32-2-arc-kt_p_4638.php

Would like to know what people have and would suggest, opinions and anything else I can/should do. With the current set up I got 366. Had some work done and its dropped to 340. The injectors and smics will give me more but I'm thinking if I can get 450 or more on this set up then ill be a happy camper.

Thanks

japspeed smic are very good and rated to 600bhp and they cost about £300 (I think)

And it would appear exactly the same as ones sold on eBay for £160....

Sell me them dude!! Did you happen to have bought these from this forum?

If you're talking to me, A. Not a hope of selling them:tt2: B. Got them on here 6-7 years ago and they're coming out of their packaging next week to be fitted to the Z:thumbup:.

there was a pair of Greddy's for sale on here not long ago, Pace sidemounts used to be popular on here also, ask around someone might have a pair in the attic etc:thumbup1:

was last year I think or before. But dam 6 years and they are coming out now. tempted for the new greddys but the tag on them is no bueno!

waiting for something decent to come up here.

Put up a "Wanted" ad for updated sidemounts, Pace, Ash spec, Greddy etc, I think Dan300zx got a huge set off eBay ( if I remember correctly) a while back and seems very happy, ask around and do a search on here and see what comes of it:thumbup1:

I had the old avs smics on my previous zx and they where a noticeable upgrade over stock smics so the new ones should be even better. Didn't have to relocate anything if I remember correctly.

Thinking of getting the z1 intercoolers or the ams from the states. Never heard of the avs though but they are nearly same price the the z1. However I would rather get some good condition used ones but if all fails then new will do.

When I can afford to I'm going for the AMS ones with the 2.5" intake piping on my current. But that's gonna be a long time from now

You'll get Jimmer at Powerzed, that's his garage, either look on the Trader page or Google Powerzed :thumbup1:

I also have the Greddy SMICs and am happy with them. They weren't cheap but were reviewed fairly favourably back in their day. I have no idea how or if things have improved in the design of these cores since then but the Greddy coolers are very much dwarfed by the huge coolers of today.

I do recall seeing a chart, testing all of the big guns about 10+ years ago and whilst the cooling efficiency was good and favourable pressure drops for the Greddys, against the bigger cores, they just couldn't keep up with the final output charge temp so simply were not as good. That was until the tests were redone with a factory front bumper and all OEM lighting (no fog ducts) installed, where the Greddys performance was superior. I still wonder today about the efficiency of these heat exchangers that are being crammed in those corners. There must be some heat soak at the top and the pressure drops can't be good? I also wonder about how effective the ducting is on some of these new ones as they're designed to be installed as ducting for OEM bumpers but due to a relatively small intake opening, serving a large core face, it is essentially creating a convergent duct which will slow down the airflow across it, increase the pressure, reducing the air that can flow across the cooler.

Disregarding the core efficiency of the cooler itself, Ideally we want to get as much cool air in and out as quickly as possible and I've seen surprisingly little testing in the best methods for intercooler exhaust ducting with published, proven results. Using these large cores with the stock NACA intercooler exhaust air being drawn out of the bottom can't be the best way. But is simply cutting slots in the arch liner or similar going to be a suitable alternative?

Not at all, valid points I think. Especially the exhaust part as that seems to be a poor design. My Peugeot 308 which has a small 3cyl turbo has a side mounted intercooler, with a big louvred exhaust vent on the inner fender liner. Seems like a good design and the vent is removable so I'm thinking of buying a couple to retrofit to my zx when I upgrade the smics, I've seen people use those bathroom/household vents but those are pretty rigid plastic and not soft like the arch liner
