I was researching how to replace the cambelt and I read that if you have an auto, to remove the crankshaft bolt you need to take the starter motor out?? Surely there is a better way to sieze the engines rotation.

Basically you need to lock up the flywheel to stop it turning when undoing the crank bolt, take out starter and use a large screwdriver or pry bar into the teeth of the flywheel to stop it turning, alternatively can be done with an air impact wrench iirc

Second method is to lock up the cams together with the belt still in place, there is a write up in the faq section by JeffTT

Best way if you dont have an impact gun is to use long breaker bar and wedge handle on the floor and quick flick of the key to undo it...you need to work out where to wedge so it does not flick around,

but the best way is an impact gun i have an electric one, besgt tool ever for this type of thing...

A little belt timing guidance on the link below, without an air gun the method Terry has mentioned is a tried and tested way, of course by the time you come to remove the bottom pulley bolt the cas unit and other parts removed or unplugged will prevent the engine starting when flicking the key so it is safe.

I can't remember if a have a torque wrench or not but doesn't the pulley bolt have to have a specific torque to tighten to?

No need for a torque wrench bud, to tighten the pulley bolt using a socket and wrench simply tighten till the engine starts to turn and then use a rubber mallet to nip it, with a few quick blows, in fact you can also use this method the other way around to undo the bolt which most of time works.

Note: you will need a 3 leg puller to get the pulley off the crank do not hit it off as bits will break off it.

I did also hear that but I'm going to edge my bets and use lots of wd40 to attempt to remove it, if not i guess i will just have to go and buy one.

The correct torque setting for the pulley bolt is 159-174 ft-lb. I've attached the FSM page showing this for you. I always follow Nissan's

recommended torque settings when working on the car and would urge you to do the same - it is good engineering practice.

Correct advise of course but in over 1500+ documented 300zx cambelts I have changed tightening the lower pulley FT (Fooking tight ) has never failed.

Likewise jeff I have set crank sprocket bolts to manufacturer specified torque with a new bolt and have had them come loose so I like FT also
