Good evening all!

I'm in the process of pulling my engine to change the turbos, I have spoken a turbo specialist who can do something similar the turbos available from the states, for what doesn't seem a bad price for a core upgrade to a larger core. By the sounds of it they can custom build to requirements.

What would the supporting mods be to get the best out of a turbo like this? Currently already have intercoolers, downpipes, exhaust, pulleys.

I understand injectors will be a necessity as will a fuel pump, (mine is whining). And then a fresh map.

Cheers for any advice!

Larger dia pipe work 2.5" for the intakes, divorced downpioes, complete 3" exhaust and maybe a Selin translator if your looking for 500 plus BHP

Who are you getting to do your turbos?

Turbo like what?

From what was discussed, it would be something similar to the gt525 from z1. I've had a chat with CR turbos, and they're local enough to me to go and chat about requirements with them.

Or you could do yourself a massive favour and have some standard built turbo`s with better seals/ bearing with the money you save replace the wiring loom as well as all the pipework, pull the plenum and do a manic delete, whilst the plenum is off grind away the area where the injector fixings are so later injector swaps are a lunch time job. Full 60k miles engine service cam belt rollers adjuster oil. fuel filters spark plugs the works and if your fuel pump is noisy change it for a good standard one.

Now when you have a great engine, reliable and ready to use, every day if you want and decent fuel economy, you can do all of this with the money you will save from going mad on turbo`s and high end mapping etc. Yes get a mild upgrade map, raise boost, be silly not to really, for around the £225 mark you can have proven improvements without any stress or massive cost.

Of course you will be missing what sadly has become increasing vital thing these days...... a pub talk BHP output or even the customary rolling road read out to " prove it" now ask yourself what YOU really want.....Good Luck.

I spoke to Vince on the phone this week and he seems a sound guy who knows what he's talking about

They have built some serious turbos for different cars. Including that bright green 1200hp GTR that was all over the place few years back.

I agree with what your saying there Jeff, however the cost of rebuilding stock isn't a large gap between those hybrids. Even a pair of gt2560s are about 1200. Admittedly they aren't a straight fit but they are a massive improvement over stock, even just the whole more modern reliable turbo side of the argument. I rebuilt my stockers with genuine Garrett rebuild kits and paid for A professional rebalance. It certainly wasn't cheap...

Yes but as you know, it rarely stops there, once the journey starts with big turbo install the road to more spending starts, fuelled in part by the " what you got ? I got bigger syndrome! and what`s you BHP ?? over the years I must of driven literally thousands of different zeds not one or two like most and some huge power zeds and rarely was they nice to drive on the road, small well thought out improvement that keep the driving experience as Nissan designed it is way more cool.

Completely agree. Mines never going to be a monster, it's already unpractical and very harsh. Pot holes, drain covers, large chunks of gravel, ouch. It's very competent through the corners though. Responsive and reliable is key.

See, this is what worries me about chasing the power - I don't want to end up with a car that's a nightmare to drive and to live with!

Some nice sensible mods and upgrades would suit me and I'd be more than happy to settle at around 450bhp :)

dont go for a generic chip like the one that was fitted in my zed on the first re-build it caused massive bore wash and ruined a perfectly good engine ..go for a rolling road re map

i hope you have upgraded brakes , the clutch standard in a manual wont handle anything much over 350 bhp so a new clutch is a must. 450 bhp on the road is scary enough

would highly recomend the PE 1420 tubs but getting them re built if they go wrong is a nightmare ..i think CR turbos had a go at mine and couldnt get the parts for them ..eggs has the same issue with his PE 1420's

but they spool so well and strongly right through the rev range ...deffo an exhaust from infinity exhausts a 3 inch system and biger intercooler pipes ...its all about torque and torque delivery with VG30dtt engine

get that right and the BHP level is pretty secondary ...

Anything more than 500 is pretty useless in a Z32 on the road. There just isn't enough grip to use it. If the wheels are spinning your not speeding up as fast as you could. We've all punched it in second and it's lit up the rears even on the old chip and boost, stock on crap tyres. Infact mine did this morning, haven't used it on a few weeks, stone cold tyres, bit of boost and sideways. Whoops.

Yup. At least garret are common as muck. Those PE tubs aren't even cheaper really are they. Not many companies making turbos suitable for the z.

Yep the car already has a mapped nistune ecu, big brake set up and all the possible deletes done, CC clutch that can handle far more than I'll ever chase. I am still undecided whether to go for the cheapest rebuild possible or fork out some money as a present to myself! I do appreciate your input though

I have to disagree with you there buddy. Prior to going pop, mine was more than usable on the road at 580hp in all conditions. Granted in the wet you had to be sensible (but then, you have to be sensible with 300hp in the wet).

Power delivery is far more crucial than outright number. A peaky 450hp can be far more of a handful over a progressive 550hp

With the right that's potentially a fair comment. Set up is key. It's kind of why I said road car, you can of corse provide enough grip to put it on all the floor but it's going to cost a few quid in tyres, esp if your doing a few miles. I'd love to go out in a zed at that sort of power level, ie 500+

should have asked Jimmer to take you out in mine while he had it steve .......im well up there in the 500 plus figure and its very progressive and turbine like ..relentless shove in the back ,

new turbo company opened up called Owen developments ..pretty much anything custom made i believe ....really for the high horse power TOTB nutters though probably

Why did yours go pop Nick?! I remember your rebuild thread a few years ago....

The actual cause is still unknown, but it was during a 181mph pass at Bruntingthorpe, cylinder 5 had suffered some det which was severe enough to blow the head gasket and cause some bore and piston damage. I suspect it was a fuel pump issue (pressure drop that starved injector 5) as the injectors have been tested and are all fine.

Made sure I have the fuel system to cope this time round and a Haltech ecu to save the engine should anything similar ever occur again
