So today I fitted this strut brace (from Mondo's car) and I just need some advice on where stuff should go. Sorry if they are obvious, I am noob.

The first thing is that the throttle linkage (I think) in this picture, I had to unscrew to make space for the mount.

The second thing is that on the other off side tower there are lots of cables etc. The thick cable in the picture below stops the bonnet from shutting and is connected to a metal pipe. Once again where and how do I move this please.

Final thing is that how tight should I make the bolt which connect s the mount to the bar. I did it tight but not overly tight. Where on the towers I did pretty much as tight as I could.

The throttle cable runs through the mount on the driver's side - there are two round holes in the sides of the towers, and the cable fits through that so you'll need to disconnect it under your throttle cover to run it through.

For the passenger side, I only had to run the pipe coming directly off the fuel filter through the holes in that tower.

:)

Oh okay, I didn't see the significance of those holes until now. Thanks si

Oh but the throttle mount thing won't bolt back in place because the strut tower is in the way.

The cruise control? The round-ish black thing? Mine doesn't have that so I can't help with that issue.

It's a reasonably common strut brace though, so someone on here should be able to help :)

Iv got that brace pull the petrol fuse out start the car too loose the pressure from that hose look at your strut there 2 holes put the hose though them and back on the pipe for the the othere part you need a extension as it need too move over I'll see if I still got it on mine as mine now a man and if it's there you can have it

Bump, can someone tell me where to move the cruise control module thing.

Also, can i blow my engine up by starting it with the fuel fuse disconnected as there is no fuel being fed to it?

  • Author

So where do other people with this strut bar move the Cruise control modult then?

I had to unbolt it to get the strut bar it, but the metal bracket it sits on interferes with the strut. do i need to get a new bracket or did most people with this mount just delete it?

I've read about fuel lines breaking from people not fitting these correctly so be mindful of that.

Thanks for making me feel confident!

I'd say that most people who install strut braces are doing it for engine bay looks because lets face they do nothing. Therefore most of them would have deleted the cruise actuator at the same time.

First part agree :) second part, as its not a show car anytime soon i will probably cut another sheet metal bracket and keep the cruise control.

I disagree, my Carbing made quite a difference. Before I fitted it, when jacking the front corner, you could physically see the panel gaps around the bonnet and wings going out of line slightly with the twist in TE car. With the Carbing fitted, this no longer happens. I don't track the car doors arguable as to whether it makes the street performance any better, but it definitely does something [emoji106]

Anyway, done the cruise control bracket, now i just need to put the fuel hose lines through it... without spilling the tank on the floor :')

I feel a little guilty as I took the strut brace off this car before I sold it.

They definitely do something. I have a front and rear fitted to my shorty, previously when the lead foot was applied you could feel the whole car twist, now the car spits itself sideways instantly.

I am a bit of a closet hooligan and I do drive it like a scalextric car (throttle is on or off).

You will notice a significant difference when you drive the car hard.

Normal driving I don't think you would ever know. They are very much an image thing for most people, but in my opinion a worthwhile piece of kit.

I'm getting to the point now where I need a respray and its as good as done. Should be on the road next summer to go to all the events :)

From what I understand our cars suspension doesn't really make the best from a strut tower brace. The load isn't applied here like on a McPherson strut car. Those two tiny M8 bolts torqued to like 30ftlb are just a location device. The load is applied laterally to the upper and lower arm mounts. So I theory they won't do much.

However, there's a fair bit of flex in the z32 shell, primarily because of how the monocote shell is produced. The front isn't very solid with the rear. The difference were feeling is likely an improvement in overall chassis regidgitity rather than the the effect of bracing the struts. There are some brackets that go in the inner wing and tie the front better to the shell. Reportedly these are a great addition in the fight against flex.

Yes but isn't the Carbring a 1 piece job? It looked like the one he was trying to fit was the ebay variety which are purely for looks

I don't know what make it is, just bought it off Mondo, either way it looks good :D

I'll be honest here; I can't say I've noticed any difference in the handling now I've removed the strut brace. It looked good but it just covered too much of the engine for my liking, so off it came :)

All that said, I know mine wasn't a "reputable" brace like Joel's so perhaps mine was purely for ornamental purposes :thumbup1:

So did these hoses and all complete, bonnet now shutting, everything in place.

only bad thing was that when taking the return hose out... the petrol decided it was going to stay in there and drool over the floor.

Result, puddle of petrol on the garage floor, which doesn't belong to me.
