Hi the club,

I am 16 and i recently purchased a 300zx 3CP7bee3.jpg and it will be my restoration project for a couple of years.

The car is 1990 automatic Twin Turbo targa top.

Good things:

- It only has 46,000 miles on the clock (74,000 km)

- I think it has barely 1000 miles on the automatic gearbox only recently replaced.

- It has MOT and drives well, gear changes are really smooth.

- coilovers with lowered suspension and a kakimoto titanium exhaust

- (apparently) really rare JDM from and back bumpers but missing the side skirts in the set (if someone could identify the bumpers that would be great so i could find the skirts for it watch?v=EfbMa9s61v8

- aftermarket ECU (not sure what make)

- It has an aftermarket air filter

Bad points:

- When driving you can hear an air leak and the car will not boost properly. (the previous owner said that the oil pressure and boost gauge work when they wont to but i have never seen the dial move, boost pressure stays at just over 0 psi and wont move. he said that it has a defi gauge controller but has no gauges connected so i am guessing that the oil pressure and boost gauges have been cut and re-routed to the defi). There is a possibility that it will still boost but it is not noticeable enough as the acceleration is very linear.

Questions:

1. Does any one know of any good z specialist in/around London. I heard Z centre in Bristol is the place to go to, but its not really worth the trip at this stage.

2. Does anyone have an electronic boost controller they could sell which might fix the cars boosting problem. i have a blitz sequential boost controller but i am missing the solenoid and i have no idea if it works or not.

3. It has been recommended I replace the cam belt as I don't know if it has ever been replaced. Is there anything additional i should be thinking of replacing at the same time and where i should go. (I will get the boost looked at if I do not fix it)

4. Are all z32 turbos really quiet? i plan on upgrading to bailey dual dump valves which will help performance but also give the iconic turbo pressure release sound. should i hear the turbos spinning at high rpms or at lease a whu-tu-tu-tu when slamming the throttle shut or do i have to upgrade to really expensive turbos for that to work?

Now for the parts:

I heard somebody on the forum had a pair of rear speaker grills, could i get in contact with someone that does, Thanks.

Also if anybody is breaking a car does anyone have an engine cover as i do not have one. (the 'Nissan v6 3000' metal plate thing)

Finally does someone have a drivers side targa wind deflector, a little plastic bar that rises when you take the targas on it. my brother snapped it off (don't worry, i dealt with him).

Thanks and hi everyone, I'm Ali

My Zed came fitted with a pair of Apexi BOVs and, touch wood, I've never had any running issues. :)

Pretty sure you can still back off the throttle in an auto, just saying. ;)

I know, but the whole point to them (if they even had one in the first place lol) was to stop surge loading between gearchanges on manual cars (which doesn't really happen on Z32s as they have recirc valves)....they don't even do that on an auto!

Edited by Funkysi

The real point in them is to make a loud noise for the chavs to knock one out to

Bwhahahahahaha hahahahaah!

Hey Baz, I asked a breaker for a quote for the items and he has come back with: engine cover £15 and rear speaker grills £15 postage £10.00.

Is this a good deal or would you be able to get it better?

Thanks, Ali

Welcome to the club mate.

The rest of your body kit (skirts) is actually fitted to my project zed that I also bought of pekabu.

I was trying to convince pekabu to sell me those bumpers for ages with no luck

had a good look over your current zed and other than obviously needing cosmetic work, its pretty much a very solid zed rust wise.

The passenger door was replaced with a red one as the original had a large dent on it.

 to pebkau for not selling the impul kit to tomo haha

Could Hannah Montana please get my name right in his posts

:biggrin::biggrin:

At least he didn't call you Peekachu! (Pikachu)  :wack:

Welcome to the club. I've had zeds since I was 18, so know your pain on insurance, although mine was cheaper then the 1.4 escort I had from 17.

I've a pair of early hks bov's on y pipes if your interested, although I bought them for the sound, but imo my zed runs smoother without either bov's or recircs.

Noob here and im sorry but what are bov's?

My car has kakimoto Titanium Catback so i dont need an exhaust XD, loud as hell. i just wanted dump valves or something so that you acctually notice the turbos, because stock they are so quiet you wouldn't know they are there.

Bov's - blow off valve or dump valve,

Recircs - recirculating valves, ( what's fitted as standard same idea as a bov but rather then venting to the atmosphere they vent back into the intake)

Hi Ali,

Welcome - nice to see a black Zed especially with rare stuff on.

Without creating a bidding war with anyone on here (or any breaker), I could offer rear speaker grill cheaper - and with a qualifying BOGOF offer! Buy one speaker grill, get one free! £15 inc postage for a pair. Bargain in anyone's eyes!

PS. I have twin bailey's Bov's and I like them (but agree with Si on the fuelling).

Yeah i worked that out, i just didn't recognize the acronym.

Hi Greg,

Unfortunately i think i am going to respray the z to white because i think it brings out the taillights better and makes it stand out more.

Sorry!

The speaker grills sounds like a good offer but let me save up some more money before i start buying parts left right center etc.

If you still have them in about a month i would probably buy them but for now im going to work with what i have.

OH and to anyone with objections to a WHITE respray raise them please!

A: BOVs won't make the turbos sound louder, won't do anything for performance, don't really do much anyway.

B: Your car is an auto and you won't hear them unless you come off the accelerator - a chocolate tea pot serves a better purpose.

BOVs / DVs / Dump valves / all the same thing.

Thanks Funksyi, its just that the stock turbos are so quiet you cant hear a spool up, blow or whu-tu-tu and so you might be convinced they aren't there. i just wanted something to show off the twin garretts.

I thought the same as you at first, but there's something about the look on someone's face when they write it off as a non turbo, then suddenly realise they are looking at your tail lights,

( ex non turbo & twin turbo owner they aren't slow either people just assume they are)

I'd personally wait till its running right and you can drive it, won't matter what noise it makes as soon as you put your foot down you'll know it's packing twins...

Well as my can't boost properly atm i can see your point XD

Stock turbos are relatively small and run a low boost pressure. Adding a large cone filter and turning the boost up helps. You are limited with an auto for noise as dump valves won't work during gear change and you also won't hear any wastegate chatter.

Fitting larger turbos will make the most noticeable difference in terms of turbo whistle. The turbos on a VG are hidden deep inside the bowels of the engine bay at the end of long intake runners, so they are fairly smothered in terms of noise.

So does anyone have any objections to a white impul respray?

I go to a rich school so i can make the front lens covers again out of plastic so I don't tint the originals haha. laser cutter ftw
