Ok not mine but helping out a local Portuguese owner from the BMW forum in pt, originally recovered from Lisbon with suspected alternator failure ( charge light on ) as soon as I drove it from the recovery truck knew it was more, no power steering ( at all!) no charge ( triggering abs fail).

Quick check around and soon found as suspected a missing drive belt, the one that ran the alternator and p/s pump, nice and easy..... but wait the belt was still there and intact but not on the pulleys?? why would a perfectly good belt come off with auto adjusters? soon found the water pump seized, well in a fashion.

On the 2.8 engine access is real easy, fan off rad shroud off and your there, so nice to have space after 17 years of knuckle scrapping on zeds!! lol so as you will see in the pictures the pump has literally fallen apart, destroying the impeller in the process. The pump housing inside has taken a beating too but not terminal at least, the real question is why had it failed so spectacularly, guess you will never know for sure, the pump was not original and suspect this to be the most likely cause as its not genuine or even a nice oem one, maybe just poor quality?

Seems a common problem on the Bmw forums with the 2.8 engine, I have asked if the owner heard anything and seems he did but carried on in an attempt to get home, it must of sounded like a a 1960`s taxi with all that going on!!

i had a 2.8 in the z3 i had years ago great engine no probs what so ever, the 2,8 intake manifold was restricted to make it was smog test, you can remove and fit the manifold of a 2,5 helps a lot the 2,8 is 193bhp if i remember, after fitting the 2,5 manifold and decat i got 240bhp out of it :cool3:

Yes seen a lot on the beemer forums about changing the manifolds over, great trick, strong reliable engine, just fit BMW service parts is the key.

Yes they and companies like Jaguar had the same issue with an internal engine coating called Nikasil, unfortunately high sulphur petrol like in the US ate it away and ruined the engines prematurely, lucky it was discovered early in production and most engines were replaced free of charge.

Nice Z3 real roadster with plenty of go.

thats the one. yes jag to had the issue. shame its a great engine .the roaster above i sold and was going to pick up my z3 m the 3.2 but the day i was due to pick up and changed my mind at the last min, and went a got a boxster s i would later live to regret that and ever since kicked my self for not getting the z3m 3.2 even now i still one one, as i was into performance bmws before i went jap

ive just highly tuned the wifes E46 myself...put more air in the tires:laugh:

what years is in the bmws build in the late 80 to about 1999 with built well after that went down will, modern ones are build crap

What modern BMWs have you been driving? [emoji1]

my x5 the new x5 and x6 a m3 and new one series and my mates 5 series

I had an E90 320D M-Sport a few years ago (08 plate). Thought the build quality was good. I hate the early I-Drive though, awful thing and the fact that it would only let you input half a postcode.

modern day bmws are not build as good as the old ones this is the case with mercs to

No it isn't. Old Mercs are utter rot boxes with poor electrics. The engines are pretty bomb proof, but that's about it.

Battle? There's nothing to battle!

we always go head to head i enjoy it but am just to fooked tonight will play tomoz if you want

Ok!

Older Mercs do rot for a past time and that's a fact! :)
