Was on the way to totb too.

So, car was driving fine, no problem at all. All of a sudden, misfiring and loss of power to a stop.

As it wouldn't rev very high we though it was the maf, unplugged it and the car seemed to start fine. But very rough and we've limped to somewhere safe.

So, when the car starts with the maf unplugged, if we plug it back in, the car dies. Won't start with it plugged in. We tried a known working maf from the other car and still the same, won't start with the maf plugged in. Also struggling to start anyway with I'm thinking could be the engine getting flooded.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Lee

Sorry to hear that ur z won't go!

I'm no mechanic so can't offer any sound advice.

Good that ur home though cos down here it's windy raining & damp!

Have you checked for air leaks, turbo pipe off somewhere, maybe unplugging the maf is making it run better cause of air leak,

check the accordion pipes the big black ones that run either side of engine,

Mine run bad when one of these came off,

I've not as I had nothing to put air through the car with. And it was undriveable... So it would start with the maf unplugged but you couldn't drive it. Wouldn't start at all with the maf plugged in.

Where is the ptu located? Mine ran like shit when I had relocated the ptu. It got water dripping on it and water got inside the plug and was flowing between the pins and knocking out cylinders. It's always somthing else to check. Anything other than bone dry is a problem. ..... Mine is a series 2 ptu.

Well, I'm home everyone which is great. I'll let you all know what I find on the car... Hopefully I will find it anyway

That's insane, considering the time I left you and Paul! Glad you finally both got home in the end.

Really hope you can get it sorted soon, mate - was a massive shame yesterday! :(

Hi Lee.

Just remember the series 2 PTU can die. People seem to think it can't. Well mine did!

Also, you say the fuel pump was changed last week? I seem to recall Dazsw recently changed his pump on an otherwise perfect running car and then that soon died, the AA came out and said the new pump was at fault.

Just a thought. :)

Maybe drop him PM, see if it was the new pump in the end?

Edited by lonezedder

When Paul and I were talking yesterday, I mentioned it could be the new pump... very coincidental that the pump gets changed and shortly after there's a running issue.

It's odd that the car ran with the MAF unplugged and even managed quite a few miles like that, although there was only minimal throttle travel and it was spitting flames in my direction from the exhausts!

We tried one of my MAFs as they both work perfectly and there was no difference on Lee's car whatsoever.

Has the new pump been fitted correctly ? , by that I mean with attention to length ( not bottoming out in the tank and preventing a proper seal etc, and not too short so it does not use the full fuel capacity of the tank) , and position in the tank and ensuring it is sealed?. what is the fuel pressure at idle ?

These things happen mate. Never worth letting it get to ha. Sense I was happy to take to piss out of myself lol.

On a side note, since you done the true top gear convoy thing and left, you missed out on a free dinner at the pub. Instead, I treat Paul to a romantic meal lol

Yes mate, I re-done the pump because I had it hanging higher up at first... Which in turn would have made the tank smaller, or at least I'd have ran out of fuel quicker. I've ruled out the lack of fuel as it was 3/4 full. And it was still starting, albeit barely, with the MAF unplugged.

Hellraiser and lonezedder - the PTU is located in the normal place at the front of the engine. Could be something to consider. I'll have a look at that link regarding the fuel pump but I'm not convinced it's that with it starting when the MAF is unplugged. Seemed to be getting too much fuel really.

Okay, I don't think I've done this here, but the only other thing I did was put fuel in. What would happen if Id put diseasel in rather than petrol. Just thinking, the other car is diesel. I don't think I've done this but silly enough, I didn't get a receipt. So, I'll check online as I'll get points... Just to be safe.

It is thicker but does fit my car as it doesn't have the bit inside that stops the nozzle fitting in.

I would have though this is a massive air leak. With the maf plugged in the ecu is getting a very small or almost zero signal and not allowing the car to run. With it unplugged it defaults to throttle position and tries to idle off the base map.

I would guess an inter cooler pipe has popped off or similar

Diesel will not ignite, it works on compression, so your car wouldnt start at all lol

Diesel will ignite with a mix of petrol already in the tank but it will put out clouds of white smoke from the exhaust, so much smoke that you won't be able to see behind the car.

I'm waiting until my points go on to the shell drivers club thing to find out what I put in... Just incase

Just see this now Lee, I hope you get the problem sorted soon, probably just something simple

Diesel will ignite with a mix of petrol already in the tank but it will put out clouds of white smoke from the exhaust, so much smoke that you won't be able to see behind the car.

There was no white smoke.... just a few jets of flame! :saddam:

when you replaced the fuelpump, did you use special submersible fuelhose to connect the pump to the mount ?

regular fuelhose can not be used,as it will quickly degrade inside a fueltank and will rupture or fall apart.

  • Author

The pump came with the fuel hose mate.

I've finally been able to check online as to what fuel I put in and it was petrol sothats now ruled out.
