I have had a good google but haven't found what I need. My gearbox is annoying me now, it is holding the car back, it hasn't "gone" but it is going. You can't rush it, I realised I have come to drive around the gearbox, Sarah doesn't want to be doing all double clutch revmatch downshifts so it needs sorting.

A new 98 spec box is $1800 from the states, too much and I can only imagine the shipping costs.

I would rather rebuild mine, the kits are cheap but I want to know if I can build my box up to 98 spec?

Are there other options? I haven't found any, do supra boxes fit or similar? Obviously with modifications.

I don't know quite how to sort this one.

Thanks guys.

The '98 ones have improved synchro from what I've read so the parts could be slightly different than what you have.

When I researched it to fix my old gearbox. The replacement parts list required to fit the new parts as a lot had to be changed due to incompatibility it woukd be cheaper to buy a new box!

Cheapest option would be a low mileage breaker box wouldn't it, or do you want it to be tip-top?

Another thought, if you buy a '98 box from the US they've probably imported it from Japan. Might be a cheaper option to see if you can get one directly from Japan, maybe from Z32 Zone.

Why not simply take the car or box alone to a gearbox specialist and get a quote for a rebuild with/without various options.

I have a receipt amongst my paperwork for a reconditioned box and I think it was £600 which I don't think is to bad.

Similar quote to to thae one I had for all new bearings and seals and synchro gears.

VERY difficult. Buying parts from Japan is one of the hardest things you can do! lol. Also, shipping costs are crazy expensive.

The best option for that would be to see whether RHD Japan could get it for you and ship it from Japan. You'd need an agent if you want to deal with z32-zone as they don't speak English there and I also think their CC system only accepts Kana.

There are some stocks of the 98+ gearboxes in the US anyway.

Thanks guys, I am not against a second hand box, but would hate to swap it twice in a couple of years.

I would rather rebuild my own or have it done somewhere. If it can't be done to 98spec the question becomes

"How much better is a 98 spec box???"

I obviously don't know how good a standard 89 box is, or the history of mine. Mine may be a 150'000 mile box? Only Zedworld and Hollings will know more.

A brand new 98+ gearbox will feel like a brand new early gearbox. The fact of the matter is, if you want to buy a new gearbox, the only one you can still buy is the 98+ version which has higher quality syncos meaning that it will take more of a beating before it starts to wear.

I also believe that there are some components that aren't available anymore for the Z32 transmission. I can't remember which ones however.

Jaffa bought a brand new 98+ gearbox and so did MadMax (Bobgenie might still have that transmission).

RHD Japan have one at a converted £900, the us sites work out at £1150.

So the benefits are more longevity than performance then Si?

I supose that my comparison was for a new 98 box vs a freshly rebuilt 89 box. I have a suspicion that I have never felt a good z32 box of any description. Mine has always been a bit clattery and metalic.

Yup. It will feel like a tight new box, but it will last longer. You wouldn't feel much difference (if any) between a freshly built old box (if done correctly) and a 98+ box. The ratios are the same (the gear sets are identical I believe).

The other way to make a Z32 gearbox feel new and slick is to fit replacement OEM bushes in the selector. If you have a quick shift, ditch it! HORRIBLE things.

Cool, I have a few options then.

£900 box before duty etc from RHD Japan.

Possibly a known history box from Bob.

A rebuild.

Next question, rebuilding your own gearbox. Is it a take LOTS of pictures, normal tools sort of a job. Or a job for a specially trained wizard where you need special tools and everything is set to a certain torque?

It's pretty involving I think if you're wanting to do it yourself. Jimmer used to build truck and lorry engines, he might have an idea on how involving it is.

Box is about £1100, shipping would be about £500-£600 maybe? Then you'd pay duty which would be another £200, so all in you'd be looking at around £1800 - £2k at a rough guess.

thats sounds ok for a new box thats would last the cars life

It's a lot of money isn't it, I just tried to call czp to get a better idea on shipping but had a problem with Skype. I will try again...

there must be some were in the uk that can rebuild a box with new parts. the uk has gone down hill over the years. many years ago we were the engineering hub of the world. now look at us

Import for an £1100 gearbox should be (according to an Internet calculator

£60 import duty

£275 sales tax

total of £1100+£335 = £1435 plus shipping

CPZ are going to email me.

There will be somewhere that can rebuild it.

Any ideas on other types of gearboxes that will fit??? If any?

I can understand people getting excited about the prospect of a 98+box, but really a freshly rebuilt early style box will/should be absolutely fine.

We forget how many early style boxes are out there right now running without issue and that many will have done a lot more than the cars indicated mileage. Surely they have already proved themselves been 15-25 years old, but you got to expect some wear and some of these cars have had some serious abuse, never mind a good deal more power than standard!

From what I can recall, the RB25det box is pretty much identical inside to the Z32 box, the front casings are even interchangeable

£335? I find that hard to believe. Is that a figure that CZP gave you? It's costing me twice as much to send 4 wheels from Japan! CZP are not on the east coast of the US either! lol Try Z1 for shipping costs as it will be cheaper being on the east cast.
