Recently I was driving along when I heard a grinding noise, I pulled over thinking it was the bumper half hanging off but quickly realised it was coming from the engine. Ended up getting it towed to a mechanics and he thinks it's something to do with the crankshaft/bearings. He's put it up on the ramp but thinks it will have to be an engine out job and due to this he has suggested getting a donor car and doing a straight swap. So I have a few questions for you guys:

1-Can the crank be removed without pulling the engine?

2-Where would be the best place to get a donor 300 or a replacement VG30?

3-Would it have to be a Manual-Manual engine swap or would a VG out of an automatic work?

Thanks in advance!

There are a few places that could help you. Check the traders section.

Yes you can swap autos and manuals but there are differences, turbos, cams, probably the ecu.

My personal opinion is if you possibly can, rebuild your own stuff or buy new, I follow a "better the devil you know" build mentality.

Either way, good luck mate :clover:

I think you would hear more than a grinding if it were the crankshaft, i would get a second opinion personally as it may be something totally different.

I had a No 6 big end bearing go!

That was a knocking noise from the engine! Not a grinding sound?

As said another opinion needed.

I won't be doing it myself, bit over my level of mechanics! Well it also sounds as if there were a handful of 10p coins inside the engine, don't know if that changes anything? I'll try get a video of the noise when I'm next down the garage, just a bit hesitant on starting the car as it could potentially be causing more damage. I'll also try get a second opinion off someone who won't be making money out of the situation in order to remove any bias!

A grinding noise can be caused by a failed turbo,as the other guys have said bearings don't grind.does the noise increase with revs ?

Pop it on a flatbed and take it to jimmer for a proper diagnosis.

What he said, ^^^^^^the best second opinion you could get

Yes the noise does increase with RPM, is there any way of telling without taking the engine/turbos out/apart? If the turbo has failed is it likely pieces have gone in back through the intake or will the damage be self contained?
